_ 11 - STEEVEES PLAIOOE By J/Pte KELLY. Hi Fellows, We got off to an excellent start this term, stealing up on the other Plotoons of 'l' Con1sny to some extent, I think, by going flat out from the very beginning. Aftc r a rather disappointing conclusion to last term, Capt HUMPHRIES, Sgt POWNALL and the whole ?;stecn Jere deter1ined that we would, "Go Places" -this terr. She f1rst _)lace we "Vent" in fact, lie to the woods ."in front :1 3n 3; the”: ac we: the Field Cooking Conpetition in -_.o—4 V 4 ins st;'le (modeet“ 0" =75 trsvent my bosstini, but field cooking ~.J.*.'.. I is our strong point 2;"i3u-ly — not modesty . The platoon then groaned its way through about a month of pretty furious "Grip". A determined attack was made on the Quiet Room. Partition walls were built and a book—case furiously bashed together from bits and pieces of wood scrounged by the Plitoon. About halfway through the term the Platoon wasshocked, one sports afternOOn, to learn that C3 t HUMPHRIES and Lt BROWN had been seriously injured in a car crash; both ankles broken in the case of Capt HUhPHEIBS, and head injuries and concussion in the case of Lt BROWN. Anyhow, they‘re now both back with us, but neither of .zaem his ‘erg- :70: effection for the pill-box which they hit: :hey have guite a little list of picturesque names for it. Capt HURLEY took over temporary command of the Platoon while Capt HUMPHRIES was in hospital, and did so in fine style, continuing Capt JUKPHRIES' pet schemes, and adding a number of his own, delivered in his portly, moustachioed, witty way. We were glad to find that Capt HUMPHRIES' determination to put us where we belong,1t the top, was to be continued, with a vengeance by Capt HUELEY. 7e worked like mad for the Commanding Officers Inspection. 7a completed the Quiet Room as far as we were able, and (ones egsin - the hell with modesty :) the block figeally looked magnificent. 3 The CO .ppcared to be more than well pleased and we won the Competition with 1 clear and definite lead. We were quite pleased with the result of the Small Side Team Games (a new venture this term) in that we came 3rd. We've had a few personal triumphs: J/L/Cpl "Nobby" Clark returned from the Southern Commend major Units Athletics Competition loaded down with mei'ls sul d .Jid exceptionzllly well to fight his way through t::t31; Se:1i- fin .19 of the Axmy Jinior Tennis Championships; J/L/Cpl "Titch" Cl :xck w z r w-xrded ior 1 fine innings of 53 runs for the 3n Cricket Ze .m by being presented with the bat, suitably inscribed by the Cornxnning Officer: Kelly ai.d Auld obtained good gradings on .h ir Dutwaxd Bound Course. I’d better pack it here, "Titch" Best is hovering around me, with a poker in his hand, threatening to clobbcr me. How was I to know it was his pen I broke ? |
