BICESTER'S EXERCISE NORTH A FAIR SWAP OUR photograph shows CRAOC 2nd Armoured Division Lieu- tenant Colonel Jackson presenting Lance Corporal Richards with an Ordnance beret on the occasion of his transfer into the Corps. CRAOC graciously gave back Lance Corporal Richards his old beret which he intends to keep for the revival of the Para Logistic Regiment! STAR ONE of the last events of the season was the departure for Scotland of Tilling's Gypsies on Bicester's annua] winter exercise, North Star. This year's site was—as last year—in Glen- more Forest at the foot of the Cairngorm mountain, however, this year they found a difference. Upon arrival—no snow which, as the accent of the exercise was on ski-ing, made for some- thing of a problem. Thankfully the weather gremlins took a holiday and as soon as the camp was set up, the skies opened and down it came. Lance Corporal Richards ioins the Corps. HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK I AM indebted to Lieutenant Colonel Williams of Ord 2 foi this photograph of what appears to be a RAOC Field Work- shop somewhere in France during the First World War. Private Ceoff Taylor in Glenmore Forest during Exercise North Star. At least looking the part. No time at all was wasted and groups of 16 Battalion soldiers and girls were soon a familiar sight on the mountains of Cairngorm and Lecht. Ski-ing techniques were developed, lost and repaired, reputations were shattered or enhanced. W/Private Kami (short for Kamikaze) Cappleman found that she needed to wax the seat of her trousers as well as her skis. Another member of the fair sex (we will not mention the name —chivalry as well as chauvinism lives on) proved the value of the large net at the foot of one of the ski runs! At the end of the exercise teams were entered in the Inter- Service Ski Championships and although the male skiers did not go unnoticed, no prizes were won. The girls however, did well with Second Lieutenant Victoria Hammick, after only sixteen days on skis, winning the Minogue Cup—the inter service ladies' novice championship. A WORD OF THANKS MAJOR G. E. McLAREN MBE (Retd), wishes to express his thanks for the memorable lunch and presentation on the occasion of his retirement. He would also like to express his thanks for the write up in the April '80 issue of THE GAZETTE. To all Ord 2 Staff and Ord F Staff past and present and RAOC Officers who backed him over periods of crisis—sincere thanks. Hard at it—somewhere in France. The working conditions seem to be somewhat cramped o say the least. The photograph was found in a cupboard during the mo'.e from High Holborn—does anyone recognise the location—or even the faces? We still have quite a few World War One readers 1 am pleased to say. HELP FOR THE HANDICAPPED IN 1969, two ladies in Rheindahlen saw a need to assist mothers with handicapped children and a voluntary school was founded; it is still carrying out this very valuable service, relying on charitable donations for its survival. |
