THE BARI CUP. The 1979/80 Bari Cup Competition was held
at Blackdown. Thirteen teams took part including two WRAC
sides who, despite lack of match practice, put up a very good
performance throughout.
The weather was predictably foul; any bids for pro-
fessional rain makers? The groundsman, later rewarded in
liquid fashion, had prepared four pitches which stood up to
some good, some indifferent and some bad play, throughout
the competition.
First day was confined to establishing which teams should
be grouped for the main Bari Cup Competition and which
teams had to be content with competing for the Festival Shield.
1 AIDU, COD Chilwell, the ancient DSCS teams and LE(A)
all looked to be in with a chance to play in the final.
After the completion of the remaining pool matches the
finalists were decided with 10 Ordnance Support Battalion and
the Apprentice College contesting the Festival Shield and 1 AIDU
and Chilwell the Bari Cup.
The Festival Shield Final was played first. The match
was won on penalty strokes after extra time by the Apprentice
College. Both teams played with vigour but were unable to
convert effort into goals.
The Bari Cup took place immediately after and predictably
developed into an exciting final. 1 AIDU opened the scoring
when the ' old' warhorse Gavin Bailey converted a penalty
stroke. Not disheartened COD Chilwell pressed hard and after
many near misses equalised in the second half from a move
developed on the left and scored from the right.
No further scoring in the second half forced the game into
extra time. During this period 1 AIDU scored two more goals
and, despite frantic efforts repelled all further attempts by Chil-
well to score.
The Bari Cup was won by 1 AIDU by three one.
Trophies and individual prizes were presented by Brigadier
Short who took the .opportunity of presenting Corps Colours to
Captain Geoff Harcourt and SQMS Geoff Brennen.

THE
GREENFOKD
URN
RAOC met REME in the annual match for the Greenford Urn
at Blackdown.
REME, as is their normal tactics, attacked strongly from
the opening whistle, several times the REME forwards penetrated
the Corps D but good work by Gavin Bailey and John Wood
supported by several timely saves by Des Kerr in goal kept the
scoreline blank.
The Corps half back line of Bob Price, Geoff Brennen and
' Barney' Barnes then started to exert pressure and were feed-
ing some good balls through to the forwards particularly to
the right flank. Over enthusiasm and badly placed last passes
caused the attacks to break down before REME were put under
too much pressure.
Halfway through the first half an attack developed down
the left wing prompted by David Jubbs, during the ensuing
melee the ball broke to Geoff Harcourt who took the ball down
the line to score from an acute angle. The Corps now picked
up their game but REME kept their goal intact and periodically
looked dangerous when mounting breakaway attacks. Half time
RAOC one, REME nil.
The second half was a repetition of the first with RAOC
doing most of the attacking but unable to convert their terri-
torial superiority into goals.
Jim Wilberforce and Graham Fullager substituted for David
Hourahane and Bob Price shortly after half time.
Towards the end of the match the Corps were awarded
a short corner, this was firmly struck by Peter Rosser and
CORPS SQUASH
OF B A O R
TOUR
THE most successful and eventful season for Corps squash
was rounded off with a tour to BAOR. The UK element of
Major Woodliffe and Major Brett, Staff Sergeant Wallis and led
by Colonel Jefferies were joined in Hannover by Warrant Officer
Class 1 Linnane and Staff Sergeant Robinson. Once again the
team's schedule included a mixture of fixtures and exhausting,
but very rewarding and worthwhile coaching clinics.
Brigadier Skinner and Colonel Jeffries watch the play at Hannover.
Whilst in the Hannover area clinics were held for all
comers at Verden and Hannover and matches were played
against Hamburg Altona SC and Langenhagen Hannover SC.
The latter being the club of our old friend Major James Beattie
(Retd), the dentist and ex-Army player, who played an enter-
taining exhibition game against Staff Sergeant Robinson.
Bielefeld was the next venue for a win over Headquarters
1 (BR) Corps and'a surprise match against Seaford College, the
Public Schools Squash Champions. The team are indebted to
Lieutenant Colonel Hellis and his officers for their generous
hospitality at the Bielefeld Garrison Officers Mess. Whilst in the
Corps area we were delighted to be joined by our Chairman,
Brigadier Skinner.
Once again the team took to the autobahn for the long
drive to Cologne and a five nil win against the Bergheim SRC.
We were pleased to welcome Corporal Daniels of 3 BAD, a
promising young player who joined us for this match.
After a final match against Headquarters BAOR at Rhein-
dahlen a somewhat exhausted touring side headed for Zeebrugge
and home.
BAOR
SOCCER
THE annual fixture of TAVR UK versus RAOC was played at
Bracht under bright and sunny conditions.
The RAOC did extremely well against a very talented
TAVR team who only two days previously had drawn with the
BAOR side 0-0. The final result two one in favour of TAVR.
probably flattered the winners slightly and a draw would have
been a fairer result.
The Corps had the better of a very fast first half and only a foul
on Crouch outside the penalty area by the TAVR goalkeeper
prevented the Corps from taking an early lead. The Corps
side was working very hard and the central defenders, Corporals
Paul Grimsley and Albert Smart were giving nothing away.
TAVR scored a surprise, but well worked, goal early in
