Wfyt Station J5eto# gt ^omt Directorate of Supply Management Headquarters Director General of Ordnance Services SECRETARIAT. During the past few weeks we have reluctantly said good- bye to two stalwarts of the Head- quarters in Brigadier Bernard Biggs and Colonel John Lloyd-Jones, both of whom have now retired after hand- ing over their respective appoint- ments to Brigadier Denzil Cowdry . and Colonel Stan Rogers. Major Bob Atkins, fresh from Rhodesia, is also soon to move to the School of Ordnance, being relieved in the Secretariat by Major Charles Cooke, ex- SOLF; and to complete the comings and goings, Mr Sandy Wilson has at last been promoted to CO and moved into Ord 1; in his stead, we welcome to the fold Mrs Margaret Moody— The coffee tastes the same but the face is much prettier! On the sports field Major Barry Jones and SSM Graham Wood have regularly played in the LE(A) hockey team which recently won the South West District Minor Units Cup and Graham Wood was also selected for the Corps cricket trials. Congratulations to Miss Debbie Rice, the Section 2 Clerical Officer, on passing an RCB—she's now marking time until the September WRAC intake. ORD 1. News is sparse this month but we do congratulate our Chief Clerk, Mick Gallagher, on his promotion to SSM; say welcome to Mr Sandy Wilson and farewell to Mrs Rosina Cooke, and report that Captain Tony Browne has now returned from the Middle Management Course whilst Major Rupert Catt and Major Ricky Ginn have been active with the LE(A) hockey team. ORD 2. Spring, they say, is a time for change, and this has certainly been the case for Ord 2. Since our last input we have seen a number of old faces go and new faces appear. Lieu- tenant Colonel Mike Wilcox (Retd) eventually left us on retire- ment after thirty five years in uniform and a further nine years as an RO: Staff Sergeant Ernie Thomas left us to join Head- quarters RAOC Cyprus on promotion (" Well done Ernie"), and Mr Steve Durrans to ' greener' pastures in Transport Seven. Arrivals include Mr Ron Lea our newly appointed Chief Adviser (Fuel and Energy); Sergeant Stephen Barraclough to Ord 2b (rumour hath it that he is a soccer player and perhaps the answer to the Ord 2/4 soccer team's prayer!); Mrs Phyllis Harrison to Ord 2a, Mr Mervyn Ledbury to Ord 2c and Mrs Rosina Cooke to Registry. May they all have a happy tour with us. ORD 4. Colonel Ord 4 asked me not to mention that he had just spent a week at M and RO as member of a Promotion Board as he had no wish to invite a flood of ' fan mail' from disappointed candidates. The arrival of Lieutenant Colonel John Dyer as the new SOI Ord 4d signalled the end of Major David Wheeler's brief reign at the top, moreover, we peons await with baited breath as the new gaffer has just attended a number of courses to dis- cover how we should be applying the techniques. Watch this space Mr Alan Praill was invited to captain the LE(A) golf team in a match against AAC Middle Wallop. He accepted and lost, so did the team! Captain Bob Willox qualified to compete in the UKLF Orienteering Championships and also played in the LE(A) team which won the South West District Minor Units hockey cup. I won't describe his brilliant penalty save which secured the victory after two periods of extra time! CONTROL DIVISION MAJOR GENERAL BROWN visited us recently and presented Long Service and Good Conduct Medals to Sergeants Dick Snell, Taff Stallard and Roy Northcott. On 1st April Clothing and General Stores Provision Branch did an 'April Fools Play' at the Tally Ho pub. ' New Faces ' included W02 Geoff Malthouse playing the accordian, and accom- paniment for most items was provided by Sergeant Dave Gartside. There was also a sketch from W02 Guy Adams and Sergeant Colin Guilfoyle. ' Later on in the month, members of C and GS Provision Branch were again in the social scene. Miss Maggie James organised a games night at Rodney House, the teams, being a mixture of military and civilian personnel, participated in darts, pool and shove ha'penny. Miss Melaine Herron's team beat that of Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Rowsell in the darts and the pool competition finished as a draw. The Control Division hockey players in the COD Bicester side enjoyed themselves in the Bari Cup Hockey Festival. For some reasons Geoff Malthouse tried to give the kiss of life to his hockey stick, but his teeth got in the way. Anyway, the teeth are now fixed and the swelling has gone down. Finally, congratulations are due to Sergeant Dick Snell for the 'A' grading he received on his B2 to Bl Supply Clerk's upgrading course. TECHNICAL EQUIPMENTS DIVISION A BRIEF contribution this month. Lieutenant Colonel John Beaty has prematurely retired and now resides in Victoria, Australia. Major John Staples and Sergeant Brian Wilkes have left for BAOR, and Corporal Alan Meigh is detached to the Aldershot Display Team. We welcome to the Division Lieutenant Colonel T. B. Owen, MBE (SOI Comms Br), Captain Brian Crawley (S03 Comms IB), Sergeants Alan Mellit and John Everall (Comms), and Sergeant Richard ' Taffy' Matthews (Engineers). Captain Colin Buckle has recently attended a four-day FH70 Item Selection Working Group meeting in Luxembourg. Captain Colin Kennedy is currently attending a Middle Manage- ment Development Course at the School of Ordnance. Congratulations to Corporal Phil Maggs on his promotion to that rank, and to Captain Colin Buckle on his provisional selection for a Quartermaster Category Commission (OEO) this coming November. And finally a sincere ' well done' to Corporals Alan Meigh, Dave Prescott and Jim Hills-Avery for their sterling work in meeting every item inability during Operation Agila. Directorate of Supply Computer Services MUCH of this months report must be devoted to our sporting achievements. Sport in DSCS I hear you say. Yes, as was reported last year, despite all efforts to the contrary, sport is played and with some success. Captain Warwick Stanton represented Bicester Garrison in the pentathlon team against Oxford University in the epee as reported in last months GAZETTE. In the first RAOC tennis match of the season against RMCS Captains Warwick Stanton and Harry O'Hare won the last doubles game two sets to one to snatch overall victory. From our local war correspondent comes this report on the recent Bari conflict. The time was 0700 hours, the date was 27th March 1980, the place was Bicester. The event was DSCS' first two day field exercise of the year. Those partici- pating were: Captain (I'll play with this one) Harcourt; Cap- tain (I'll get him) Brown; Captain (How do I hold this weapon) Shackleton; Lieutenant (Hope they give me an audition) Banks; WOl (What foul, umpire?) Hartley; WOl (Faster than a speed- ing bullet) Roberts; W02 (I'm in charge) Briggs; Staff Sergeant (Who wants a fight) Vale; Mr (I'll be glad when I get my pension) Mahoney; Mr (Phew, this is faster than golf) Evans; Mr (This is the life) Jeffereys. — 12 — |
