STAFF
BAND
APPEAL,
THE appeal finally closed when, in the LE(A) Sergeants Mess,
Major General Brown drew the first of twenty four winning
tickets, in the presence of a fair representation of members of
the Headquarters Civilian Staff and of the Officers and Sergeants
Messes. Before commencing the draw the DGOS expressed his
great pleasure in the fact that donations had already reached
more than ninety per cent of target, with promises of more to
come and said also that it was good to see our Corps Band
being helped so well in such a positive manner by members
of the Corps.
Since the presentation, Cheryl has also completed another
sponsored walk in the Grunewald Forest, Berlin. This walk was
organised by Major and Mrs Page and all proceeds are being
donated to SSAFA. Eighteen children completed the walk for
total sponsorships of DM2370 (£600) and Cheryl was sponsored
for DM605 (£150).
Cheryl now has fifty five medals for walking and running,
awarded for events in Berlin, West Germany, Belgium and
Austria.
EXTRA
TIME
IN the light of the recent Liverpool—Arsenal FA Cup semi-
final marathon I am indebted to a reader for the following
extract from the Egyptian GAZETTE of sometime in the 30s.
RAOC Workshop 2 ' Z ' Company 5th Fusiliers 2
RAOC Workshop 1 ' Z" Company 5th Fusiliers 1

What it is all about? said the Egyptian GAZETTE. For
those who don't know. The Workshop of the RAOC were drawn
to meet ' Z ' Company, 5th Fusiliers in the second round of the
Small Units Cup (Abbassia Group) and only after the sixth
replay, the seventh game, was a definite result reached, Ord-
nance winning, after over eleven hours of play—by two goals
to one. This victory was gained on Saturday on the Slade
ground, Abbassia all the goals being scored in the first half.
With sixteen minutes of the game gone Ordnance led by
two clear goals. Dikes and Duncan being the scorers and shortly
before half time Hickson reduced the leeway for the Fusiliers.
Can anyone beat it—and did any reader play in that epic
struggle?
The DCOS reaches in for the first prize.

GAZETTE.

NINE year old Cheryl Page, the daughter of Major and Mrs
Brian Page of Ordnance Services Berlin, recently handed over a
cheque for £125 to the Chaplain-General to the Forces, the
Venerable Archdeacon Peter Mallet. The cheque was for the
British Kidney Association, one of the Chaplain-General's fund
raising projects and the money was raised from a sponsored walk
in Spandau, Berlin. As a result of this walk and other fund
raising activities, a further sum of £125 was sent to the
ACROSS Trust for funding holidays for handicapped children,
£30 was sent to the British Red Cross and £75 to TEAR Fund
for their Cambodian refugee project.
PRESENTATION
AT a rather unique ceremony recently, the Chief of the Defence
Staff (Admiral of the Fleet Sir Terence Lewin) presented Long
Service and Good Conduct Medals to four members of his
personal staff, one each from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines,
Army and Royal Air Force. The Army recipient was Sergeant
Allan Davies of the Corps.
Allan, who started life in the Queen's Own Hussars in
1965, has also been attached to the AAC. He has served in
Berlin, Aden, Singapore and Germany and joined CDS' Staff
from 1st Division in December 1977.

A CLOSE
FINISH
A RECENT noteworthy achievement by Sergeant Dave O'Neill
who, in his spare time, runs for the Hong Kong Distance Run-
ners Club. In the thirty three mile Stanley to Shataukok ultra-
marathon, Dave, in winning the race, clipped two minutes off
the course record in a time of four hours, four minutes and
ten seconds. Despite the extreme length of the course, the
final was as close as a track race. Dave had to overtake his
rival about two hundred yards from the finish line on the China
border. Congratulations Dave!
