ONCE again we successfully combined our annual meeting with
the ACC on Ash Ranges; they repeated their previous years
gesture in providing competitors and range staff with most
excellent midday lunches throughout the week.
A total of one hundred and forty RAOC competitors
represented fourteen Units including teams from BAOR and

THE RAOC Apprentices College has won the Army Junior

EX-APPRENTICE
AWARDED
BEM
GENERAL SIR ANTHONY FARRAR-HOCKLEY recently
visited the Junior Division, The Staff College at Warminster and
during this visit, Corporal Hilborn, an ex-Junior RSM of the
Apprentices College was presented with the British Empire
Medal.
That General Farrar-Hockley was able to make the presen-
tation was particularly appropriate as it was whilst serving under
his command at Headquarters AFNORTH that Corporal Hilbom
was awarded the honour for providing exceptionally valuable
services to the smooth and efficient running of the Headquarters.
It was also particularly pleasing for Corporal Hilborn that his
mother and family were able to attend the celebration lunch
after the ceremony.

The Chairing of the Champion: Lance Corporal Werherby T A is
chaired from the Ranges by his colleagues.
Hard to believe now but the whole weeks programme was
keenly contested in the most glorious weather which in fact, was
instrumental to some delay on the final day by causing a heath
fire. However, with a little adjustment and aiming off, the
chairing of the Champion for 1980, Lance Corporal Wefherby
(TA), led by the Staff Band, went off without a hitch.
The result of the meeting reflected a good standard of
shooting during the week with the thirty one trophies quite
widely distributed.
ST
KILDA
THE group of rugged islands known as St Kilda are situated
fifty five kilometres to the West of the Outer Hebrides, the
most westerly point of the United Kingdom. Because of their
great interest to naturalists, the National Trust for Scotland,
to whom they were bequeathed in 1957, has leased them to
the Nature Conservancy Council; the Army maintain a Radar
establishment there.
The Islands, however, have not been permanently inhabited
since 1930, when, following several centuries of gradual
population decline all the residents were evacuated, at their
request, to the mainland of Scotland on 29th August, 1930.
On 29th August 1980, the fiftieth Anniversary of the
Evacuation of St Kilda, a special visit to the islands has been
arranged when the Kirk, restored by Trust volunteer work
parties, will be rededicated.
The National Trust for Scotland, is to issue a special
commemorative cover for this occasion and, with the co-
operation of the Post Office, for the first time in over fifty
years a St Kilda postmark will be used. This special pictorial
handstamp will commemorate the anniversary of the evacuation
and will be used on the one day only, 29th August 1980.
In addition to the standard cover as above, a limited issue
of five hundred covers will be available signed by a group of
the islanders, returning to St Kilda for the occasion.
The Army's involvement with present day St Kilda will
be marked by a further five hundred covers signed by Brigadier
Ryan, Commanding Officer of the St Kilda Garrison. These
will receive a special St Kilda Army handstamped cachet.
