SERGEANT'S
BRAVE
ACTION
A ROYAL MILITARY POLICE SERGEANT who showed
outstanding courage by entering an exploding munitions factory
in Italy last year and bringing to safety two survivors from
among the wreckage and scattered live high explosive shells, has
been awarded The Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct.
Sergeant Allan was commanding a three man patrol during
a United Kingdom Mobile Force exercise in support of NATO
in North East Italy when the explosion occurred in Istrago.
Arriving almost immediately at the disaster scene, having heard
the explosion, he found that the way was blocked by debris and
live fallen power cables.
While trying to clear a route for emergency services, and to
control an hysterical crowd which had gathered in the area, his
patrol was hit by the blast of a second, larger explosion, injuring
one slightly in the abdomen. In total, five people died and
nineteen were injured in the explosions which left a crater thirty
five metres wide and seven metres deep.
Leaving his patrol to control access to the site, and com-
pletely disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Allan searched the
heart of the blast area, still littered with live explosives, and
rescued two civilian workers before withdrawing to provide the
Italian authorities with a detailed assessment of the situation.
