IT is with regret that we have to record that Colonel S. J.
Hoyland, known to his many friends as ' J o e ' died on 22nd
June 1980, in hospital at Bexhill, he was seventy one.
Colonel Hoyland joined the Army as a boy soldier and
later served in France, the Middle East, the Far East, the
War Office and for some time at Donnington. He was also
Deputy Inspector. To his widow Greta we offer our deepest
sympathy—he will be sadly missed.

MAJOR H. S. WHITBURN
MAJOR WHITBURN served in the Corps from 1939 to 1945
and from 1951 to 1959. Since his retirement he had nursed
his wife Irene who had become disabled. Sadly, he died of a
heart attack and, within a few days, his wife died—also of a
heart attack.
Major Whitburn was a fine organist and frequently played
at St Andrews Church Kuala Lumpur when he served in Malaya
and often broadcast. With his wife as his partner, he reached
the finals of the Far East Tennis Championships in the mid
fifties; Major Whitburn was also a well known and accomplished
photographer.
Both he and his wife Irene will be sadly missed by their
family and by all who knew and remembered them.

CORPORAL A. WHITE
BRIGADIER G. A. VINER OBE writes: —
'Chalky' White joined the RAOC at Hilsea, from The
Gloucestershire Regiment, as a musician in 1934 at the time I
was Adjutant.
The RAOC Band at that period had-only unofficial status,
so musicians were trained as clerks or storemen and were
paid as such.
Brigadier Terry Clarke, succeeded me as Adjutant in
February 1937, he was also a transfer from The Gloucestershire
Regiment and during his appointment, the Band was granted
official status.
During the war Chalky served as a tradesman on active
service being evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940; I understood
from him that by the end of the war he was an acting BOWO.
At the end of hostilities he rejoined the Band and was
very well known throughout the Corps playing the Big Drum
and the Double Bass. On retirement after twenty eight years
service he settled with his family in Portsmouth.
After the Portsmouth Branch of the RAOC- Association
was disbanded he joined the Portsmouth Branch of the 1940
Dunkirk Veterans. This is where I met him again having been
myself a Beach Officer at La Panne.
Chalky was a keen and very popular member and rarely
missed a parade or function or the monthly meetings. He was
very proud of his RAOC background and his long service to
his country.
On Wednesday 28th May; - he felt unwell but as he was
looking forward to being present at the fortieth Reunion at
Dunkirk on the 6th June, he decided not to call in his doctor.
On Saturday 31st May, he died very suddenly.
He was cremated at Porchester on 4th June. The Dunkirk
Veterans Portsmouth Branch provided an escort, with the
Standard, of around two dozen or so comrades. Brigadier Terry
Clarke and myself were also present.
Chalky who was in his seventies, leaves a widow and two
sons to whom we send our sincere sympathy.
At his passing we lose a fine soldier, a loyal member of
his Corps and a great friend.
