ADVENTURE TRAINING IN THE HARZ MOUNTAINS TWENTY members of the Corps Stores Company led by Second Lieutenant Turner left Richmond Barracks recently for a weeks Adventure Training in the Harz Mountains. They got off to a brisk start at 0530 hours with Physical Training under Sergeant Fairhurst. The subsequent daily sessions were at the more respectable time of 0600 hours! Then the students (victims?) were divided into two groups, Alpha, led by Corporal Pickersgill and Bravo, by Corporal Lowe. Alpha group spent the day undergoing instruction on basic canoeing from Sergeant Fairhurst and Corporal Chalmers. The first daunting task was a fifty metre swim in a very cold lake. The cries they uttered resembled that of the landing call of the proverbial ' Oohme Bird.' It was then into the canoes to learn all the drills required to become a competent canoeist. Meanwhile out on the Rock Face Second Lieutenant Turner was teaching the skills of Basic Rock Climbing and Abseiling to Bravo Group. It was interesting to observe the different facial expressions as they made their first abseil descent. The CRAOC takes to the water. However, it was a very enjoyable and beneficial week, the only regret being that work could not permit a longer stay. Corporal Wheatstone on the big leap. The intrepid pot holders emerge. Leaning backwards at the top, a hint of fear. A few paces down, grim determination. After the first successful leap out (and return) sheer delight. Next was Pot-Holing under the expert guidance of an in- structor from the AMTC at Silberhutte. Our brave adventurers disappeared into the mouth of a limestone cave, which, if you believe the tales of the survivors, quickly tapered to the dimen- sions of a mouse-hole. (Well it did get a little tight in places). It proved to be a most enjoyable experience for our young soldiers, especially when Corporal Higgins got stuck! Finally more canoeing for one group and a hike for the other, the length of the hike was determined by their skill with the map. The groups changed over activities at midday. Lieutenant Colonel Hellis and Major H. E. Fleming paid a visit; CRAOC tried his hand in a canoe but failed to entertain as he stepped ashore dry.
