Headquarters Director General of Ordnance Services
SECRETARIAT
AND ORD 1. In
June we said farewell to SSM Mick
Gallagher, Chief Clerk Ord 1; the
_zeal and energy he showed whilst with
us, at both work and play, will long
be remembered; no doubt he is now
polishing up his Shorthand prior to
taking up his next appointment as PA
to CDS. We all wish him well in the new job and welcome as
his relief SQMS Bryan Rose fresh from SHAPE. Miss Debbie
Rice has also left the Secretariat and Miss Anita Holloway is
holding the Fort for Section 2 until a replacement can be
found.
The Ord 1 sailing bug has now reached epidemic pro-
portions and there are only a few who have not experienced
some form of attack or other. Major Mike Jiggens underwent a
course of treatment in dinghy sailing recently at Bicester which
almost cured him and he now only suffers from an occasional
attack of Regatta! A worse case is affecting Ord lc, d and e'
where three officers have received joint therapy on ' Thunderer.'
Major Robin Farey, organiser of the treatment has been looking
decidedly well lately but so far has resisted the temptation to
import a parrot into the office.
On the social side, the Secretariat and Ord 1 joined forces
to hold a very successful social evening, the aim of which was
to make money for SSAFA and with the sale of tickets, raffles
and an auction the grand sum of £120 was achieved. Our
thanks to the organisers, SSMs Graham Wood and Mick
Gallagher, their willing helpers and, of course, all those who
supported the evening.
ORD 2. Since our last contribution to THE GAZETTE, Ord 2
has yet again seen changes in staff. It all started with Colonel
Tony Newnham being suddenly whisked away to become
Colonel Q(SMS); his office chair was not even allowed to cool
down before being occupied by the present incumbent Colonel
Alan Newcombe (formerly GS01(W) Pet. Ord 2); to both
we extend our very best wishes in their new appointments.
Major John Norris has gone to sunnier climes—Hong
Kong no less; we all wish both John and Eileen a happy over-
seas tour.
Bill Vivian CEO), who started with Ord 2e in First Avenue
House (FAH), and spent the last few months down among
the ' petrol sniffers' in Ord 2d, has ' gone up in the world '—
joining the finance boys ' upstairs' in Ord F.
Jenny Upton, until recently with Ord 2b (Food) has moved
sideways to join Ord 2a, and now finds herself, as CO (Stats),
knee deep in Fuel (Allowances, Free!; Returns, Domestic!);
this move is the result of our losing Mrs Smith on retirement.
' Smithie * as she was known to a great many, first joined the
Civil Service twelve years ago (after a career in Nursing). All
who knew her will sadly miss her and will join us all in wishing
her a happy retirement.
To Major Ron Gray who comes to us as DAQMG, and
his wife Allison, we extend our warmest welcome—may their
tour be a happy one.
HEADQUARTERS
DBD. It is with sadness that we say a
fond farewell to Brigadier Brian Dalton who leaves us on
retirement after almost three years as Director of Base Depots.
All of us in the DBD Empire wish the Brigadier and his wife
Pauline all the very best for the future.
Into the ' Captains Chair' we welcome our new Director,
Brigadier Peter Crawley, who joins us from BAOR—welcome
on board sir.
ORD 3. SOI " I see we have not appeared again." To rectify
the situation and ' appear,' the following numerous goings and
(due to the Government recruiting embargo) less comings have
taken place since our last visible presence in THE GAZETTE. On
the goings side we have said goodbye to Major Robin Lee on
posting to BAOR, Mr Norman Priddy to CPU on promotion.
Mr Bernard Smith on posting to COD Chilwell, Miss Paula
Line on posting to Wales and civvy street and finally Mrs Kim
Baker on posting to motherhood.
On the comings side we welcome Major Ken Mullins into
the S02 Coord ' hot seat'; he joins us from Headquarters
Scotland, and finally we welcome Mrs Clare Ryan on transfer
from the Senior Service at Portsmouth.

IT would appear that I am now the permanent scribe for the
DSCS GAZETTE Notes. (Unless anyone else knows differently).
I would have thought that in a Unit like ours we would have the
technology and the means to get George (or Astrid for that
matter) to write these notes. I must investigate that so watch
out next month! You can imagine the sort of news story that
might emanate from such a source—' Chips Down As Salome
Bytes Head Off Mircofiche.'
Work still impedes sport which continues to be played.
nevertheless. Our athletic gladiators, Messrs Kuester and
Guild, achieved commendable results in the Army Individual
Championships, Travers Clarke, Army (UK) versus Army
(BAOR) and South East District Inter-Unit championships. In
the latter competition W 2 Kuester was first in the one hundred
and ten metre hurdles and W02 Guild was fourth in the 1500
metres. At Travers Clarke, Kuester was first in the Javelin and
W02 Guild, second in the 1500 metres.
The cricket team representing Bicester RAOC Officers Mess
in the Base Depot inter Officers Mess tournament was dominated
by DSCS cricketers (as well as the two scorers, Sue Rollo and
Barry Morgan). Richard Hazlerigg captained the team ably
supported by John Neale, Richard Shore, Colin Tennant, Gary
Miller, Warwick Stanton and Tom Briggs. The latter made a
magnificent catch at a crucial point in the game and Richard
Shore's bowling was superb (at least one maiden over excluding
Salome!).
DSCS also dominated the crew for the RAOC entry in
the Army Sailing Association regatta in the Solent and Channel.
Skippered by Peter Hart with Mike Harris, John Hopkinson
and Nigel Banks from DSCS and Des Hardon from DSM(A),
the Corps Yacht, Thunderer, was put through her paces.
Whilst there was no notable result all three races were com-
pleted unscathed and all aboard gained valuable experience.
Service children were amongst fifteen thousand children
offered a free days outing to Billing Aquadrome in Northampton-
shire recently. The outing, sponsored and organised by the
Variety Club of Great Britain was well supported by children
(and a few adults!) from Bicester, who descended upon Billing
in seven coaches. Gary Miller was seen distributing fifty hot-
dogs (cooked by Army cooks) to the Officers Mess coach-load,
whilst fifty cans of Pepsi-cola and ice-cream were passed round
by John Eaton. Everyone had a marvellous day (I know my
two children did) and thanks to John Eaton who had the un-
enviable task of being ' OIC Coach' which he performed
with distinction. This must stand him in good stead for his new
appointment on promotion in July—Chief Planning Officer.
COD Bicester! We wish him the best of luck and of course we
will see him around. We also say farewell to Ian Rees—an-
other from DSCS who is Hong Kong bound! Welcome to
WOs2 Paton and Eden (both from Hong Kong!).

THE indifferent weather of the past month has meant that most
of us have preferred the sheltered life of Vauxhall Barracks
to the strawberry fields of Harwell. Despite the weather the
Didcot Station Fete was enjoyed by all who took part and
raised over £400 for charities. This was quickly followed by
