THE BASE DEPOTS
INTER
OFFICERS MESS
TOURNAMENT
»
IN 1965 the Base Organisation Cup Tournament was introduced
to enable members of Officers Messes of Base Organisation to
take part in an inter Officers Tournament, thus fostering a
competitive spirit whilst providing a facility for spectators and
participants to meet socially.
As a result of changes in the Logistic Support Organisation,
in 1977, the Tournament was re-organised and the name was
changed to " Base Depots Inter Officers Mess Tournament."
The tournament continues to figure high in the summer
calendar of social and sporting events and 1980 was yet another
successful year.
The golf section was hosted by COD Donnington at the
Wrekin Golf Club and was won by the combined Donnington/
Chilwell team.
APPRENTICES
COLLEGE
THE ARMY (MINOR
UNITS)
ATHLETIC CUP
IN excellent conditions for athletics, the sound of the starter's
pistol heralded what was to prove to be a nail-biting afternoon.
It was accepted that if the College were to win, they would
have to beat their main opposition: the Junior Parachute Com-
pany. This proved to be a correct assumption as, after the first
four track events, the College had two wins and two seconds to
their credit—as had the Junior Paras.
The Field events proved just as exciting, with the Long
Jump and Shot Putt going to the College and the Discus to
the Paras. After the field events the College found themselves
five points ahead, with the final result depending upon the relay.
This was exciting, with both teams neck and neck until the third
leg, when the College finally surged ahead to win the overall
competition.
Thus Corps history has been made; this is the first time
that the RAOC Apprentices College has won the Army Athletics
Cup. It was a great team performance, and all the hard work
that had previously been put in, paid dividends.
The team, with results, was as follows:—Second A/Private
O'Connell, two hundred metres; first A/Private Weissang, four
hundred metres; first A/Lance Corporal Henry, eight hundred
metres; second A/Private McGill, fifteen hundred metres; first
A/Corporal Metcalfe, high jump; first A/Corporal Skelton,
long jump; second A/Private Chidlow, discus; first A/Lance
Corporal Rogerson, shot; second A/Private Watts, javelin;
first A/Corporal Skelton; A/Lance Corporal Henry, A/Private
Parker and A/Private O'Connell four by one hundred metre
relay.
Finally, a word of praise to the team coaches, Captain Andy
Jelly, Captain Terry Bunyard and Lieutenant Mike Bott. Their
splendid effort in training these young men to these high
standards were invaluable.
RAOC
Mrs Eileen Crawley makes the presentation.
Cricket followed at Bicester with Bicester beating the com-
bined CVD/Andover team in a close fought semi-final, and
going on to beat Donnington/Chilwell in an exciting final.
Tennis and finals day was staged at Chilwell using their
three excellent grass courts. Unfortunately CVD/Andover were
unable to produce a team, but the stalwarts of Bicester, Don-
nington/Chilwell and CADs/DLSA entertained a fair gathering
of spectators and Donnington/Chilwell emerged as winners of
the tennis section and overall winners of the tournament.
The Director of Base Depots, Brigadier Peter Crawley, con-
gratulated the winners and thanked all those who had played
their part in participating and staging the 1980 events. He
declared his intention to keep the tournament going during the
years ahead, and even threatens an over fifties seven-a-side
rugby section!
CROSS

THE 1981 Corps Cross Country Championships will be held at
Deepcut at 1500 hours on Thursday 15th January 1981. Details
of entry forms are being circulated to Commands and Units
who would normally be expected to enter.
The meeting

enquiries may be forwarded.
DINGHY
REGATTA
THE BAOR Regatta was held at Roermond, each of the
eighteen helmsmen taking part in five out of six races. The
large number of late entries was very welcome but found us
short of boats at the last minute.
The two days were dull and wet; on Thursday we had
strong winds and on Friday very light winds—only the sun was
missing.
Race one was won by Major Jim Ashcroft with WOl
Peter Green second and Major Page third. In races two, three
and four it started to look like a REME take-over bid with
Staff Sergeant Dave Miles REME of RVD Recklinghausen
taking a hat-trick of first places with Major Ashcroft and
Sergeant Eamon O'Neill sharing the second and third places.
The result now looked certain, but in races five and six, Major
Ashcroft returned to top form with another two wins.
The overall result, counting the best four races was:
first Major Jim Ashcroft four and a half points; second Staff
Sergeant Dave Miles (REME) five and a quarter points; third
Sergeant Eamon O'Neill nine points; fourth Corporal Ginger
Stuthridge fifteen points; fifth WOl Peter Green seventeen
points; sixth Lance Corporal Steve Gurmin twenty points;
seventh W02 John Craig twenty two points.
It was very pleasing to see so many new young helmsmen
taking part after only a year or so sailing experience. Lance
Corporal Gurmin in sixth place won the prize for best Elemen-
tary helmsman and Corporal Stuthridge who also started sail-
ing last year but has already earned his Intermediate Certificate
was presented with a consolation prize of Paul Elvstrom's RYA
Racing Rules.
The prizes were kindly presented by Mrs Mary Whalley.
