THE RAOC (BAOR) ATHLETICS MEETING ONCE again this event took the form of a team competition between affiliated Units throughout BAOR. This year the venue was the Army Sports Stadium at Senneiager. A total of one hundred and eighty nine athletes made the journey to take part in a keenly fought contest watched by a large number of spectators which included the DGOS. The outstanding achievement of the day was undoubtedly Sergeant Binks double record-breaking performance in winning both the 1500 and the 5000 metres for the third year in succes- sion. Other records fell in the 800 metres when Corporal Lonnen beat his own winning time of 1979 by .71 seconds, and in the 4 x 100 metres when 3 BAD ran a fine race to win hand- somely in an excellent time of 45.3 seconds. The tug-of-war championships were held concurrently with the main athletics meeting and the two finals provided a dramatic and fitting climax to a most entertaining day's sport. Major Bob Reid featured prominently in both of these finals and must be complimented on the splendidly professional perform- ance of his four teams composed of RAOC personnel from 2nd Armoured Division. The consistently good results achieved by the track and field competitors representing 3 BAD earned them a narrow victory over FOD Dulmen in the competition for the Team Challenge Cup, whilst 3rd Armoured Division captured the Field Force Trophy. The loudest cheer of the day was reserved for Mrs Brown, wife of the DGOS, who kindly presented the prizes to all winners and runners-up. Some well known faces in the Old Soldiers Race—can't that the dog was really trying.
