Northern Ireland HEADQUARTERS RAOC WE sent a squad to Donnington for the Football Sixes and the team reached the semi-finals. Our congratulations are there- fore in order to: Staff Sergeant Duncan Leich, Sergeant Keith Tomlinson, Staff Sergeant Bob Costin, Corporal Phil Walker, (Lance Corporal Shep Shepperd (Ord Depot), Corporal Alan Mayo (NIRW) and Lance Corporal Mick Morgan (EOD) and further to Bob Costin and Duncan Leich for being in the team that reached the semi-finals of the Northern Ireland Sixes. WOl Dolly Gray who managed the Donnington Team worked up some enthusiasm amongst the boys for the Northern Ireland Athletic Championships and with their help Lisburn Garrison managed second place. The eight members of the RAOC who took part were WOl Gray, Staff Sergeants Costin and Smith, Sergeant Tomlinson, Corporals Walker and Kettle, Lance Corporals Eades and Hutton and some names crop up again in cricket with selections for the Garrison team being Bob Costin, Keith Tomlinson, Bert Eastwood, Ron Cawley and Paul Callow. Whilst talking sport it would be unfair not to mention Corporals McKernan and Walker who have been selected for the Garrison Rod and Reel Club to fish in the Army Open Cham- pionships. Sergeanrs three leave Londonderry, thank you M and RO for the posting orders and the LOA. Left to right Sergeants Mick Daly, Pete Grills and Bert Dovell. we think!). Sergeant Mick Daly has left Londonderry for a sunny tour with Gurkha Field Force whilst Sergeant Pete Grills is en route to Canada. Before departing the latter was seen collecting stray dogs in the streets of Deny in order to form his own dog team. He practised sledging tactics by night and kept calling the Staff Clerks ' Mush.' These Sergeants three featured in our picture will be missed. We also bid farewell to the Garrison Staff Officer, Major Dickie Pratt and to Captain Richard Bugler our Rickshaw watchkeeper both of whom can be sighted in the Bicester area. We welcome Sergeant Tom Harbinson from Paderborn, Corporal Alec Ramage from Hameln, Corporal Bruce Watson from Recklinghausen, Privates Andrew Parks and Paul Young from the Depot. The past week has been one of ' quick, look busy' as the I of E Team inspected us once again. Honestly we really do work here. For instance Private Ray Preston is working hard at retaining his title as top scorer on Space Invaders and at weekends climbing higher and more difficult mountains. Private Andy Parkes will soon be doing a few weeks hard graft on a freefall course, which we hope he will find easier than perform- ing on the ranges with the nine millimetre pistol—his thumb should grow back soon! W02 Pete Murray reaped the benefit of hours spent ' mucking about in boats' when he gained his Helmsman qualification—after which he promptly ran his boat aground. Corporal Dave Wood has been going in for marathon walking while Corporal Bill Cole has finally conquered the BFT. Lance Corporal Ian Cramp is still working hard at learn- ing how to use the photocopier; we hope that he will soon be able to master the precise art of putting the paper in the right way u p ; Corporal Bill Laight is persevering at squash and has great ambitions of lifting himself off the bottom of the league; perhaps even winning a game. Corporal Bruce Watson is wearing out the whites faster than they can be replaced as he works at knocking up the runs for the Squadron cricket team. Even the clerks football team have tasted success with their very first win of the season, the shock must have been too much as they haven't played since. W O l D. Cray receiving his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal from Major Ccneral Clover in Northern Ireland. We are grateful to Super Clerk Headquarters Northern Ireland WOl D. Gray for all the sporting information, in fact we reward him by showing his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal presentation pictures. How do we start? is the question every month when the poison pen is taken out to produce our contribution to THE GAZETTE. This month we have no problem as we must com- mence by an apology to all our thousands of readers for the error of our ways—we omitted to post our last months notes in time (WOl Dolly Gray please note). Rather than start an in depth investigation of the cause of the catastrophe (which no doubt would have proved it was our own fault) we wandered into Vehicles Department in the hope of putting the blame on them, we found S03 Vehicles playing with his toys, and noted a green wind up frog creeping its slimy way across the desk being chased by a plastic jumping crab (fly crab air they say). We were so taken aback by the demonstration that we forgot the original mission, and retreated before the frog got us. And we keep quiet about playing with model railways! Well one lives and learns. This month we have said farewell to Major Tim Proffitt who is to take up a post with the RAF at 7 MU Quedgley. Our good wishes for the future go to Tim and June, and a hearty welcome at the same time to Major Mike Newman who has taken over the S02 Maintenance commitment. 321 EOD Unit HEADQUARTERS SECTION. The headquarters team has had a fairly quiet time of late although one large van bomb was stopped on its way into Lisburn recently. During its clearance the remainder of the team were delighted to see the SAT hand- cuffed to the terrorist driver. Farewell to Staff Sergeant Dave Booth, our cool, commando trained, province reserve operator. The 39 Brigade radio net will never be the same again. Welcome to Staff Sergeant Paddy Mulgrew. Our volleyball team fought their way to the final of the Northern Ireland championships but unfortunately lost to 2 Para. The team consisted of: Sergeant Pete Dimmock (Captain), Staff Sergeant Russ Edwards, Sergeants Taff Davies and' Spook Anderson, Lance Corporals Tony Hutton and Mick Morgan. HEADQUARTERS 8 INFANRY BRIGADE SEVERAL RAOC characters have recently departed. Firstly, Sergeant Bert Dovell has left the mist enshrouded banks of the River Foyle to take up a position with 3 BAD (Fly Half — AMMUNITION INSPECTORATE. Our 'Man in Black' Sergeant Spook Anderson is busily polishing his whistle in 118 — |
