Transcription trials and finally the Aldershot Army Display which had
certain members of the detachment showing off various items
of Arctic hardware and seeking potential members for the
Corps.
At present the detachment consists of a fairly motly
crew, they are: The boss Staff Sergeant John Bennetts,
Corporal Berny Reeby (usually found floating around the
sky on a contraption of sailcloth, wire and aluminium tubing),
Lance Corporals Les Roff, Pip Taylor and Andy Rorks,
Privates Don Laight' and Bill Whelpdale.
With the annual UEE just under our belt and Otterburn
around the corner we look forward to our summer leave.
Then we prepare for a short trip to our winter home of
Norway for Exercise Teamwork.
This we hope will be the first of many news letters from
the 45th of Ski. To all friends who are now far afield we
say " the Bridies are still greasy and the Burn in Arbroath
will be visited shortly." Chin up all you pongos.
(What about some good black and white hang-gliding
photographs.—Editor.)
Commando Logistic Regiment
ORDNANCE
SQUADRON
IT is now so long since the Squadron
produced a contribution for THE GAZETTE,
it is a wonder that there is any one left
who remembers how to write. Half of this
year has passed since we returned from
this year's sojourn in Norway and we are
already winding ourselves up for next
Here follows a brief resumd of our activities since
years effort.
Norway.
Following Easter leave, and a brief visit to Donnington
for the RAOC six-a-side football in which we came third, the
Logistic Regiment went to Salisbury Plain in mid May to carry
out regimental training. Those readers resident in the UK will
remember that this is when the summer made its brief appear-
ance. The Squadron devised a programme which included
NBC, helicopter and infantry drills. The final infantry exercise
was against a live enemy of the OC, WOl Tech and the Chief
Clerk. They say they won, but their bruises say they didn't!
Secure in the knowledge that summer had gone, the
Squadron decamped to the Peak District for a weeks ad-
venturous training. Between abseiling, raft building, orienteering
and a final fifty-miler along the Pennine Way, we found time
to take a day down in Aldershot for the Travers Clarke
Athletics meeting. Wins in four track events, including the two
thousand metres Steeplechase gained the Squadron second place
overall and Lance Corporal Vince Phillips the Victor Ludorum
trophy for the second year running. We returned to Leek
just in time to lose our Spearhead detachment to the New
Hebrides.
In July, 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines invaded Salis-
bury Plain, once again. This time it was carried out with
real logistic support with the passage of combat supplies in-
cluding simulated ammunition from the Beach Head:at Brown-
down, where the combat supplies elements of the Squadron
were landed. For this exercise the Squadron assumed the
combat supplies configuration, leaving a much depleted tech-
nical troop scratching their heads over how a notional 03
demand, quoting a personal regimental number, got transmitted
to Bicester! It was probably a demand for reinforcements!!
Postings in and out have been many over the period. We
welcome (in most cases) Captain Tug Wilson Oast seen here as
WOl Tech); WOl Pete Herratt, Staff Sergeant Jimmy Jones,
Sergeant Trevor Edge; Corporals Jock Campbell, Carl Gilling
and Mack McCartney; Privates Ned Kelly, Skin Cooney and
the three musketeers from 6 Field Force, Privates Mark Carnell,
Scouses Dineley and Lyons.
Those ' absent on duty' include Captain Tug Wilson,
Sergeant George Dawkins, Corporal Wurz Phelps and Private
Andy Martin with the Coconut Commandos in the New
Hebrides; Lance Corporal Rivetts Ziverts I with the RAOC
Mobile Display Team, and Lance Corporal Larry Clarke who is
in Northern Ireland.

Central Ammunition Depot Kineton
I HAVE been away shooting for the past
month—two weeks of which were spent
at Bisley competing with the Unit team
in RASAM. Despite the awful weather
RSM Chalmers, W02 Burkin, Staff
Sergeant Hooper, Corporal Thomsen and
yours truly acquitted ourselves well with-
out winning any prizes and the experience
was invaluable, particularly to Corporal
Thomsen a ' shot' for the future without
a doubt A word of sympathy for the
RSM though still muttering that " if only
" He is still
awaiting his first shooting prize and time is running out for
him—fast!
My attention has been drawn to an omission in a previous
newsletter to the hard work put in by some members of the
Station Golfing Society and apparently gave the impression that
Major Roger Thomas was the sole ' worker,' in fact this is not
so. Others to mention are Captain John Connelly as treasurer,
Staff Sergeant John Hooper—current holder of the Captains
Cup won at the Corps Spring Meeting, is the Greens Member
and the builder, together with Corporal Etteridge, of the very
palatial club house which is in fact a converted 1908 Rail
Wagon, and last but by no means least Captain Tommy
Armstrong who is, according to the QM, the non playing
sleeping member, whatever that is! Seriously though the course
is proving to be immensely popular at all levels and the Station
is indebted to the hard work put in by this hardy band.
Another activity thriving at the moment is an Inter Com-
pany Hockey Competition which is proving that most of the
good players are in C Company (A S of A) as they head the
league with three good wins at the time of going to press.
The Kineton Tadpoles. Back row (left to right): Captain Brown,
Corporal Perry, Corporal Carrahar, Corporal Nicol, Private W a l t o n
and Private Sowerby. Front row (left to right): W 2 Hubbard,
Staff Sergeant Robinson, Private Edwards, Private Madeley,
Private Burns and Sergeant Donal.
The WRAC mentions this month are for the Athletics
relay team of Lance Corporal Brown, Privates Guy, Edgcombe
and Williams who won a trophy when coming first at the West
Area Athletics Championships held at Tidworth, for hosting a
swimming gala versus Donnington which we lost and to
Private Onisko for gaining a very creditable second place in
her class in the Banbury Area Institute of Advanced Motorist
Road Safety Competition.
Not to be outdone Private Sharp of the MT Section won
his class in the same competition.
The Aldershot Display was a huge success for the Army—
and for our own 'A' Company who provided the personnel for
the Ammunition Display namely:—WOl John Rolison, Staff
Sergeant Andy Brown, Sergeant Paul Myring, Corporals Dave
Cordner, Rocky O'Rourke, Tony Corr, Bob Scott, Nick Thomsen,
Mark Lawrence and Lance Corporal Chris Starbuck.
The thousands of visitors—most of whom seemed to be
screaming kids wanting to operate the Wheelbarrow and go
home with part of the display—did not deter our lads who
exercised great self control, until they got to the beer tent,
where most of their spare time and money was spent!
