ENGAGEMENTS, MARRIAGES, BIRTHS AND DEATHS NOTICES.
These will be inserted free to all past and present members of
the Corps.
MORE UNITS are sending in contributions in the form of news-
letters than ever before, an excellent sign and one which should
be good for circulation though paradoxically it is a development
which might over a period of time, have the opposite effect.
Because of the length of some newsletters I am having
difficulty in maintaining the balance of general interest matter in
THE GAZETTE.
Editors are always in a difficult position and particularly so
when constricted by space. Units naturally dislike their news-
letters to be drastically edited down and contributors, though
generally very good, are not always too patient in awaiting
publication of their articles.
At forty pages we are just about the largest monthly journal:
achieved by very careful budgeting, by the use of lightweight
paper, by carefully selected type and by cropping the copies we
distribute to exactly match the economic postage weight—though
we need to sell more if we are to keep it up in these inflationary
times.
We cannot afford a larger magazine so I would ask all
correspondents, while keeping up the good work, to be interesting
but to be reasonably brief and to bear with me when editing for
space has to take place; my apologies also to those who await
publication of their articles.
The main concern is that contributors are not discouraged—
at the moment judging by your comments I know that you are
not, but it would help to get the quart into the pint pot if the
slogan became, be interesting—be brief.
While on the subject of contributions I often have suggested
that cover photographs be sent in, however, very seldom do I
receive suitable ones. Photographs for the cover must be taken
portrait (vertically) and have sky or other blank areas at the
top, or at the bottom, to take the titling. Have a look at some
back copies—good black and white cover photographs are very
hard to find and sadly, we just can't afford to use colour except
on special occasions.
