STAFF SERGEANT ANDY BALE
WOl MIKE MASON (on behalf of friends and colleagues every-
where) writes: —
The death of Andy Bale has left many of us with a deep
sense of personal loss. At the age of thirty three Andy had
established himself as a conscientious, dedicated staff clerk with a
bright future ahead of him. A man of many interests with the
ability to discuss a wide variety of topics with authoritative ease.
Andy enlisted as a boy in 1962 into Royal Signals and later trans-
ferred to RAOC as Corporal in 1973. I first met him in MOD
following his transfer to the Corps. He was a very valuable and
respected member of a small team, constantly working under
pressure and long into the night, often sleeping over on the
office camp bed. I met him again when he arrived in BAOR
after a tour in Gibraltar. Once more he took the reins in a
busy office, maintaining the same diligent, self-sacrificing attitude
which earned him the admiration of all those with whom he
worked.
He was always cheerful and possessed a sharp sense of
humour. He enjoyed the company of his colleagues immensely
and was a loyal friend always willing to help others in times
of difficulty.
Andy was presented with the Long Service and Good Conduct
Medal in December last year. It was only recently that his
illness came to light. He returned to the UK in March to under-
go an operation and treatment for cancer but it became apparent
that the disease was terminal. He died on 10th August 1980 at
his parents' home. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his
widow Mandy, daughter Judith and to his parents in North
Devon.
