port* Report CORPS TENNIS 1980 THE Corps tennis side has not been too strong this year and we have missed the presence of Sergeant Smith (now in BAOR) from his place with Major John Woodliffe in the first pair. However, Colonel Andrew Paviour—our Chairman—and Major John Woodliffe have played regularly as your first pair this summer. Where the opponents have been good, only our first pair produced favourable results. Lieutenant Colonel Steve Roach, Major John Rose and Sergeant Burke have been our most consistent ' middle men ' who have once again supported our Corps side admirably. It is always nice to welcome new blood to our side and Major Frank Ham—recently transferred to the Corps—has helped us when ever he has been available. Staff Sergeant Pearson has also supported our team with enthusiasm as have Major John Langdon, Captain Warwick Stanton and Captain Harry O'Hare. Hopefully, next season we will be able to improve our position in the league and to this end it is hoped to organise some winter training sessions in the indoor courts at Aldershot. Of the eleven matches our Corps side played, we won five and lost six. CORPS TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS UNFORTUNATELY the weather was far from kind to us; it was windy and wet. However, we overcame this setback by using the indoor courts at the Royal Aldershot Officers Club. It was pleasant to welcome Sergeant Smith and Corporal Weber from BAOR, the former back in England, like Borg, to defend his singles title for the fifth time. It was also nice to welcome Major Bill Howard, who, having retired at fifty five some eighteen years ago, has supported us so loyally every year throughout his retirement. He has won both the handicap singles and doubles on a number of occasions since his retire- ment and we hope that he will continue to support us for many years to come. A strong contingent came from Northern Ireland: Captain Simon Hall, Sergeants Anderson and Davies and Lance Corporal Prowen were most welcome additions to the competition. The Mens' Open Singles was a repeat of last year when Sergeant Smith defended his title from Major John Woodliffe, who lost the first set on a tie-break. Sergeant Smith retained his singles title in two hard fought sets. However, Major John Woodliffe with Colonel Andrew Paviour turned the tide when they defeated Sergeant Smith and Corporal Weber in the Mens' Open Doubles. Major John Woodliffe and Miss Jenny Wood- liffe won the mixed doubles in three sets when they beat Sergeant Smith and Mrs Dennison. In the handicap events Captain Warwick Stanton success- fully defended his singles title when he beat Major Alan Jamieson six four, four six, six three. In the doubles Lieutenant Colonel Steve Roach and Major John Rose proved too strong for Major Alan Jamieson and Major Bill Howard. The ladies events were dominated by Mrs Jane Futrell and Mrs Jill Catt who won the open and handicap singles respectively and together they beat Mrs Fiona Dennison and Mrs Sheila Bruce in three sets to win the ladies handicap doubles. In spite of the weather we succeeded in playing for the Plate, where Staff Sergeant Pearson beat Lieutenant Colonel Steve Roach in the final. BAOR TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS THE 1980 Championships were held at Rheindahlen. The semi-final stage of the competition was extremely closely fought. The first semi-final was between Lance Corporal Nick Weber and Sergeant Andy Smith. This proved to be an extremely interesting game providing tennis of the top class, with Sergeant — Mrs Whalley makes the presentation to Sergeant Smith Lieutenant Colonel Rees in the background. with Smith emerging as winner. Sergeant Graham Muggleton met Captain John Vickers in the other semi-final and Sergeant Muggleton ran out eventual winner. In the mixed doubles final between Sergeant Andy Smith and Mrs Pat Noon and Lance Corporal Nick Weber and Mrs Janet Murray, Sergeant Smith and Mrs Noon were the victors. The mens singles final between Sergeant Andy Smith and Sergeant Graham Muggleton promised to be an extremely closely fought match. Unfortunately, after having played just one game the heavens opened and we had a full scale thunderstorm with all courts under water. It soon became apparent_that no further play was going to be possible. After some chasing around we managed to. secure the use of the courts at Queens School and were consequently able to com- plete the mens singles final indoors with Sergeant Andy Smith winning in two sets. Whilst all this had been happening the plate competition had been completed with Major Barry Bebbington .winning by one point from W02 Percy D'Souza.
