ing daughter of our QM, Captain Ron Miller and his wife Rita. Wedding bells could peal early next year. Congratulations to Sergeant Chalkie White on the award of his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Chalkie actually blushed when the citation was read out. The presentation was made by Colonel David Parker, and the medal duly wetted by Sergeants Mess members. We welcome Staff Sergeant Gaut, Sergeant Jenkinson, Corporals Smith, Salisbury and Rodgers, Privates Wilson, Old, Crosbie and Kirkby. Central Ordnance D e p o t Bicester -, 16 BATTALION /^T\J h~<^>v THIS month we welcome our new CO, ltlJ'1% itl'UVX Lieutenant Colonel Alastair Wallace and lJfcttU-<Si ySXxxiy his family, who have joined us from • V l *5= = »//\^ s ==^»«'- East District and bid a sad farewell to ^^* E g y ^ S ? We were pleased Jls-jLiJ to re-badge and welcome to the Corps At£t£&\ Sergeant Bateman from the PWO and fflf j j j Lance Corporal Delafield from the ACC. Sgogr We are glad they have both got good ^*^ first postings within the Corps—Bicester! HEADQUARTERS COMPANY. They say every dog has its day! This is certainly true on the sports field for Headquarters Company because they have finally won an inter-Company event. Having come last in athletics, last in the cross-country and last in the swimming, confidence was not high when we ap- proached the cricket competition. In the first match A Company easily beat B Company. The second match was between Headquarters Company and B Com- pany. B Company batted first and scored a credible ninety one runs all out. In reply Headquarters Company made a disastrous start and were eighteen for seven before Private Roger Joyce and Lance Corporal Steve Moiser put on fifty seven for the eighth wicket which helped Headquarters Company to scrape through by one wicket. In the deciding match against A Company, W02 Kelly Adamson scored fifty two out of a total of seventy three all out. Fortunately A Company batsmen were not in form and were all out for thirty one thanks to Staff Sergeant John Crack taking four wickets for five runs. Headquarters Company are therefore declared (excuse the pun) champions. CSM Mick Campling has recently taken over as Company Sergeant Major and his presence is already being felt! We wel- come the following: Staff Sergeant Laing, Sergeant Davis. Corporal Piggott, Lance Corporal Hanson, Privates Muhammid Ali, Leach and Smith. A COMPANY. Having been without a CSM for some time, we welcome Company Sergeant Major Tom Flowers to our midst. Already his presence has created a new spirit of unity within the Company. Congratulations to Lance Corporal and Mrs Lantry on the birth of their son and to Private and Mrs Martin on the birth of their daughter. Welcome to Lance Corporal O'Neill and Private Standing. B COMPANY. On the sporting front B Company have not been as successful as in recent months. Despite a fine innings of thirty not out by Lance Corporal Dave Jubbs, B Company were still unable to defeat Headquarters Company helped by an ex-B Company traitor in the guise of Lance Corporal Steve Moiser. (Now off to Canada for his sins!). We say welcome to some new faces to B Company. Firstly the arrival of the new CSM. They say a new brush sweeps clean, well that saying is now apt amongst the living-in personnel in B Company. ' Bend the knee' can be greatly heard amongst the peace and quiet of B Company life. We also welcome W02 Digger Denholm, a new member for Traffic Branch and perhaps to strengthen the rugby squad? We say farewell to the old CSM—Mick Campling—now off overseas to Headquarters Company. A smoker was held in his honour and he gladly accepted a farewell gift with his usual finesse and charm. 1 Ammunition Inspection and Disposal Unit FOR those of you who have missed THE GAZETTE Notes from This Unit will be pleased to note that we will be appearing in print once every two months. Each SATO area is taking turns in supplying the details with the ' odd' notes from Head- quarters. 1 Ammunition Inspection and Disposal Unit, now the holders of the Hill Rugby and Bari Hockey Cups, have spent most of this month trying for the ' hat-trick,' namely the inter- Unit thirty over cricket competition. The competition started off well and a convincing victory over COD Donnington. Next to fall to the deadly talents of 1 Ammunition Inspection and Disposal Unit were 10 Ordnance Support Battalion. A much more con- ventional match made noteable by the fact that Sergeant Basset actually made some runs. Eventually, however, all good things must come to an end and the Unit was beaten by COD Bicester. Better luck next year. We must also give our best wishes to the ATO Hereford volleyball team. At present they only play ladies teams but assure us that they are training hard and hope to graduate to old age pensioners in the near future. Our congratulations to Lance Corporal K. E. Mann on being awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. SATO NORTH. Major Charles Jackman joined the Unit and jumped straight in our twice yearly Licensing Exercise. We in- volved not only our three detachments, but Civil Police, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and 421 EOD teams. Despite the usual exercise weather the enthusiasm was incredible and the thanks received from all the Police involved, made the hard work worth- while. It seems Major Jackman has had enough though, because he is soon to go to Manchester University, his place here is to be filled by Major Alan Glasby. ATO CATTERICK. Captain Paul Williamson feels his detach- ment is a staging post used by ' Records ' with the staff turnover since his arrival last February, so he has toddled off to Canada for a week or two. W02 Ray Evans has been pushed upstairs to take over as SAT North whilst WOl Dave Greenaway goes playing ' Pussy Cats.' Staff Sergeant Jim Collins has been promoted and has also popped over to BATUS for a month. Sergeant Andy Brightman can now drive and has bought a car just before he goes to Liverpool. Sergeant Dave Gough is back from Belize and sometimes comes into work. Staff Sergeant Bill dimming is losing his voice from doing three lectures a week. Sergeant Pete Snell has been on so many courses he is probably better qualified than all of DLSA put together. Corporal Mike Newsome is now ATI—well done. A TO LIVERPOOL. Captain Martin Shilston is trying to do so many courses before his four month holiday in an ' island paradise' that he isn't here very often. He must have been told about the holiday by W02 Kevin Callaghan who has just returned from a similar one. Quote " Nothing to do all day except walk around historic buildings " (or was it derelict build- ings). Staff Sergeant Taff Cainan (well most of him anyway) is posted after four years invaluable service—we will all miss you Taff (who's going to do our work). Sergeant Mick Atkinson has been whooping it up in Kentucky and New York and has found time to pass a driving test, Pre-Ops and Weapons Familiarisation courses. Corporal Roger Ball has been having a smashing time in the Transit (or what's left of it). Corporal Jerry Parsons is taking a degree in Maths to help our civvy driver, Tony Harrison, complete his 1771. ATO EDINBURGH. Captain David Kerr and his wife Margaret are to be congratulated on the birth of another little jockette. WOl Geoff Walmsley is still very quiet (what's he planning)! Staff Sergeant Mick Berridge is calling it a day to join the amourphous mass called civvy street. Staff Sergeant Pete Ashurst, you will all be pleased to hear is still laughing—and making us laugh—keep it up Pete, we need it. Corporal Don Granner has recently arrived—he is quiet too (what are they planning)? Corporal ' Mac' MacDonald has passed his HGV1 and he and Lance Corporal Ron Holden are both now trained projectionists? Our slimline Lance Corporal Derek Norrie says he has lost a considerable number of pounds lately—although we can't tell the difference just by looking at him. The Petroleum Centre RECENTLY we received a visit from the DGOS. During his visit he inspected the Ceremonial Barrack Guard and toured the Depot and School of Petroleum. He also saw a display of fire fighting by our resident Fire Brigade. At the Sergeants Mess he presented the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal to Sergeant Andy Sharkey who is one of our much travelled Petroleum Operators; having served in Singapore, Hong Kong, Cyprus (twice), Jamaica, Bermuda, Gan, Norway and BAOR. On the sports front the cricket team have recorded some — 157 — |
