Sergeant and Mrs. Sharkey with the DCOS after the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal presentation. successes recently against local sides. A Unit Tennis com- petition was held last month, our local Bjorn Borg, Private Martin Sinclair, swept to victory with comparative ease. We have recently welcomed Major Pineher, Staff Sergeant Langley, Sergeant Cannings, Corporals Webster and Waddcll, Privates Toms, Cason and Evans. We have said farewell to Major Graham, Sergeants James and Rowlands and we con- gratulate Sergeant and Mrs Skinner, Lance Corporal and Mrs Crocker on the births of their daughters and Corporal and Mrs Smith on the birth of their son. Finally we say farewell to the Commandant Lieutenant Colonel Cannons now at the School of Ordnance and welcome in his place Lieutenant Colonel Gillberry from Bicester. We also take this opportunity to thank Mrs Jan Cannons for all her work in the Unit and the running of a successful wives club. Nottingham Theatre Royal to watch TV recordings of 'Cannon and Ball,' Frankic Howcrd and Russ Abbott, general opinion- more please. The Rock Climbing and Mountaineering Club have travelled the length and breadth of the country. Two trips to North Wales, Cornwall and the Lake District. The club now has about twenty members with at least six of these leading climbs up to severe standard. Mention must be made of Corporal Steven Holmes who fell whilst climbing in Cornwall and then spent the next few weeks lying in hospital with fractured ribs. Such was his determination that he has just returned from the Lake District after four days climbing. This I feel spells out the morale and character of the club. Future trips planned are to the Peak District, Scot- land and Yasomutc Valley California USA next year. Good climbing. Golf continues to flourish. A team represented the station in the Army Golf Championships—Lance Corporal Whitley won the eighteen hole bogey competition and Staff Sergeant Hooper finished third in the same competition. Team is also achieving creditable results in the Western District Inter Services League and recently beat the current leaders and favourites the Recruit Selection Centre from Sutton Coldficld. Marriages: Corporal MacLachlin to a Banbury girl and Private Jones to W/Privatc D. Thompson. Engagements: Corporal Lawrence to W/Privatc A. Wilby and Private Williams to W/Privatc Y. Walker. Births: John Peter to Staff Sergeant and Mrs Booth. Central Ammunition Depot Kineton PRIDE of place in this months newsletter goes to Headquarters Company—it doesn't happen very often! Having stated in my last letter that the Inter Company Hockey Competition was only proving that all the good players were in ' C ' Company when lo, and behold Headquarters Company string together a series of victories to win the competition. Well done. The summer holiday activities for the school children on Station are again proving very successful but the CAO was seen to turn-pale when he was informed that permission was being sought from the PSA for use of the Water Tower to carry out abseiling. Quote of the week " Really Sir, it is OK and we are adequately insured." The Sergeants Mess are cock a hoop after winning the Base Organisation Inter Mess Cricket Competition beating COD Bicester. The ever grinning face of the RSM beams even brighter. Officer Commanding D Company—WRAC that is—is at present on leave; comments such as "the relief OC wears ' Y fronts' " and " I saw the new OC D Company shaving this morn- ing " are commonplace but it should be pointed out that the relief ' she' is in fact a ' he,' none other than our Quartermaster Captain John Connelly. There arc those who are asking how he can find the time for all these 'extra mural' activities! ! Still with the WRAC we are soon to have a new subaltern posted in—one Second Lieutenant Lindy Turner who is to replace Second Lieutenant Jane Grafton who is posted to Bassingborn. To Lindy we say welcome and to Jane good luck in your new appointment and thank you for all your efforts in Kineton. Moves are also in store for the OC and the CSM of the same Company—more on those when they occur. WRAC achieve- ment of the month—indeed the year—is the winning by Kine- ton of the A(W)RA Smallbore Postal Competition 1979/80 League. The team consisted of Second Lieutenant Grafton and Privates Clarkson, Luk and Fleming and Private Clarkson is to be further congratulated on winning the individual event. Members of the Station Wives Club can be seen with smiles on their faces as they recall their recent visits to the Photo Lance Corporal Bradley RPC The CAO—Lieutenant Colonel Wolstencroft presents the Inter Company Hockey Trophy to the Team Manager Corporal John Curric of Headquarters Company. Central Ammunition Depot Longtown IT is with sadness that we say farewell on retirement to Mr Bill Hall our SATO Technical Resources Controller. Bill, well known within the Corps, especially the Ammunition Inspectorate field, joned the CAD in 1939. For nine years he held various posts within the stores side of the Depot before transfer- ring to SATO in 1948 when a civilian element was formed. He has held the senior civilian supervisory post within SATO for the past twenty years. Apart from his normal duties Bill found time to serve on many Depot Committees during his forty one years service. He was Secretary of the local branch and a member of the county committee of the National Savings movement, as a result, mainly due to his efforts, a sum exceeding £1,000,000 was saved by Depot personnel. Additionally he was a founder member in 1939 and treasurer of the CAD Civilian Canteen for eighteen years during which he always gave sterling service. In 1975 Bill received recognition for his loyal service and was awarded the Imperial Service Medal and in 1977, as the Senior Civil Servant on the Depot Staff, he received the Queens Jubilee Medal. We all wish you well Bill and hope you have an enjoyable retirement. Welcome to Sergeant Lindsey Davidson RNZOC who has joined us for four months whilst Staff Sergeant Jim Ball has departed for New Zealand to fill Lindsey's post, lucky devil! — 158 — |
