Private Duffy discovered some new rockclimbing techniques. I think he named the particular technique ' Tranverse Abseiling,' basically it is merely a way of swinging fifty foot on either side of the centre, across a rockface while hanging upside down on the rope facilitating a more panoramic view. He doesn't think the new technique will cause a sensation in the rock climbing world! A final aquatic incident worthy of mention which occurred during the arduous training was the sudden improvement in Lieutenant Brownlee's windsurfing skills when he realised he was under attack from a number of vicious, man eating swans! It is strange to report that in the month we had four posted into the Unit and nobody posted out. Welcome to Sergeant Northcott, another useful member in the team intending the Tartan takeover of the company, chaired by Lieutenant ' Jimmy' Morrison, welcome also to Corporal Proctor, Lance Corporals Fleming and Watson. We are now dominated by the long build up, and prepara- - tion for Spearpoint. We also look forward to the arrival of Second Lieutenant Saddleton, who is posted in from RMA Sand- hurst, and to Lieutenant Hurst who is detached to the company for two months from Shrivenham. 86 SUPPLY DEPOT THE whole of the Unit was saddened by the death of Mrs Sheila Stewart, wife of Corporal Pete Stewart who left this Unit in April on posting to COD Chilwell. Sheila was a quiet, un- assuming girl who was always respected by the other wives in the Unit for her sound common sense. We take this oppor- tunity to extend our deepest sympathy to Corporal Stewart and his family, on their sad loss. Since our last notes we have had the saga of the Scottish meat pies to contend with. A long and involved story but one which, thanks to our OC, Major Charles Mclnnes, ended happily with a Scottish Regiment being able to eat the delicacy (?) of their country. Our photograph shows our Officer Commanding sampling the meats (sic) of his labours. On the postings side we welcome into the Unit Corporal 4th Armoured Division I HEADQUARTERS RAOC ^^•^^^ NOW that our intrepid Adjutant, Captair ^ ^ H ^^^k White has almost completed his tour ir flJH^^^ Hcrford he has decided that it is about timt ^^^^^^^B that civilian clerks of Headquarters RAOC ' ^^^^^^^V should also contribute towards RAOC Corp: ^^^^^^^T GAZETTE notes. Of course, he knows ful! ^^B^r' well that he will no longer be responsible foi I what was said once these lines have beer printed. We were pleased to read in one of the previous issues that the vehicle clerk of S Man 2 celebrated her thirtieth anniversary. We feel that our congratulations should not be missed and hope that our vehicle demands are handled by Frau Wisser for many more years to come. Thanks! We congratulate Corporal Ken Hogg on passing his RPCl Course which was held in Bracht, but we hear he spent more time in Dusseldorf—say no more . . . ! Members of the branch can now (happily?) be seen jogging round the countryside of Herford three times a week and it has turned into a contest to see if anyone can come in before Private ' Gazelle' Rhodes. (Rumour only). STAFF CLERKS IT is so long since anyone mentioned the Staff Clerks that we were beginning to think we were extinct, but having thought about it for a while I decided to do something about it and bring the Staff Clerks into the limelight again. Firstly to welcome to the Headquarters Lance Corporal ' Geordie' McKay, who, having recently done a shorthand course, is learning to use two fingers. Also to Private Nick Neilson who is in the process of dis- covering Germany, by map! Congratulations go to Corporals Bill Billington and Dave Marriott on promotion. Well done boys. Better luck next time Frank! Rumour control has it that Staff Sergeant Kevin Hogg is to get the Queen's Award to Industry for his contribution on leave. Well done Kev! Staff Sergeant Bob Boughen and Corporal Don ' Mario' Bennett are in the process of starting their own Ice Cream Com- pany and have indented through the DAQMG (Ops) forgone Ice Cream Van for use on Exercise Crusader. It is also rumoured that Private Paul Robson has put in a take-over bid for NAAFI as he spends his morning inspecting the NAAFI at close quarters. Lance Corporal Frank Bucknall sent out by GS02 Operations to collect his ID Card from JHQ Rheindahlen, took six hours to travel the two hundred kilometres. Wheh asked how the joumey took so long he replied that he had trouble with his gear stick. Nasty! Lance Corporal John Wallace recently lost his front teeth, and rumour has it that he has been approached to star in a remake of Dracula. Keep smiling Jock! Staff Sergeant Barry Owen is living in bliss at present Having escaped a fate worse than death, a dreaded posting to the MOD. He has been given an extension. Finally, I've been asked to mention out of pity Lance Corporal Taff Wright, who has never had a mention in THE GAZETTE. Happy 'now Taff? Taster-in-Chicf. Ken Cornwall who, along with Sergeant Roy Lancaster, form the Butchery Section of the Depot. We also bid a belated welcome to Mrs Jean Stewart and family. Her husband, Jim, looks a lot happier now that Jean is here to look after him. Sergeant Jack Miller and Corporal Brian Bolton took a few days off to watch Liverpool play at Wembley. We can only feel sorry for them that they didn't see a decent match, perhaps if Forest had played things would have been different. POST YOUR NEWSLETTERS IN TIME TO REACH THE EDITOR BY THE END OF EACH MONTH LEAVING ONE MONTH FOR PUBLICATION — ORDNANCE COMPANY THIS last month has been a quiet period in the Company with the work being done by those who have had or about to have summer leave. The lucky ones seem to be getting as far away as possible from the wet Detmold weather in an effort to change colour albeit on a temporary basis. Rumour has it that the Officer Commanding, Second-in-Command and Chief Clerk now talk about staff in confidence matters in French. It would appear to be the lull before the storm as the paper- work is building up on Exercise Spearpoint. Training days, including ranges, have continued with many pairs of boots worn out on the BFT course. Lieutenant Eddie Cook our Administration Officer, wishes to tell everyone he has arrived. As a result of some incredible oversight he has not had a mention in THE GAZETTE for some time. Our congratulations go to Sergeant and Mrs Price on the birth of their daughter, Sergeant and Mrs Stafford, Lance Corporal and Mrs Thornett on the birth of their sons. Also to the newly weds, Private and Mandy Dobson and Private and Heike Stotan to whom go our best wishes for the future. Postings maintain the ever changing face of the Company and we have said farewell to Corporal Whittle to SEME Bordon, Lance Corporal Thornett to Combat Supplies Battalion (the 164 — |
