{Continued from page 145)
said goodbye to the Pay Corps Skipper leaving Sergeant Bill
Partridge, Private Nobby Clark, myself and one other. I can-
not remember who got the runs, but we won—much to our
delight.
The second was against the Medics, when our bowlers could
not make any impression against their opening bats. Our
Skipper (Major General L. L. Hoare), took the ball and bowled
underarm lobs. He pitched one well on the leg and the bats-
man ignored it. To his surprise he was bowled round his legs.
This was the first time that I had kept wicket to an underarm
bowler and I found it a most difficult task.
The third memory was the last game in 1939 against the
RASC at Hilsea. We started badly but the fifth or sixth
stand put on one hundred and fifty odd, and Corporal Angel
collected a very useful century, which put us well on our feel
again. I think we won.
Corps cricket started again after the war under the guidance
of Colonel Alan Parnaby. I played in one game only—old age
had caught up with me. This was against the Royal Corps of
Signals at Calterick, incidentally the only Corps side that I had
not played against pre-war. Reference to the score book will
reveal an interesting incident.
Signalman Brian Close caught
behind the stumps—bowled by Captain Castle and if I remember
correctly his score was nil!
When I left the Corps for good in 1954, the DOS was kind
enough to send me ; a letter, together with a Corps cap. It is a
very proud and treasured possession.
Good luck to the youngsters who represent the Corps now
and in the future.
