Transcription is with us under an exchange exercise. On a visit to our Stores
Section in the Tower of London he enjoyed himself so much he
stayed on in Central London and wasn't seen until three days
later. We're glad the crown jewels are still intact.
Congratulations and best wishes to Private Dave Barke and
W/Private Carol Black on their marriage. Congratulations are
also tendered to Lance Corporals Marie Doyle and Sue McLaren
on their promotion. '
Farewell to Privates Graham Hilton and Errol Thompson
who leave us on posting and welcome to Privates Malcolm
Money and Paul Martin RPC. We hope they'll enjoy their stay.
Central Ordnance Depot Chilwell
TRAFFIC BRANCH. August 1980 has been a month of change
at the Priority Freight Service Troop of Traffic. We have said
goodbye to the WOIC D8, WOl John Greig, and wish him and
his family all the best for the future in civilian life, and welcome
in his place WOl Digger Denholm from the hardships of
BAOR.
Goodbyes are also in order to Corporal De St Croix, con-
gratulations on two counts, promotion and a posting to Hong
Kong, so it just goes to show a job well done is rewarded.
Farewell also to Corporal Nicholson on demob. Welcomes
to Corporal Cusack from BAOR and Private Graham on internal
transfer.
16 Battalion
BATTALION HEADQUARTERS.
Due to the absence of our
gallant heroes, Captain Wilson, Sergeant Siddiqui, Lance Corporal
Blackhurst on Crusader, the work load within the Battalion Lines
has dropped drastically, but that does not mean that we have
been sitting around doing nothing.
The Assistant Adjutant, Lieutenant John Underhill, has had
his work cut out filling in for the Adjutant (Captain Petrocelli
Wilson) but he seems to be coping well—for an ex-Ammunition
Technician. The Chief Clerk, W 2 John Andrews, also feels the
pace but he seems to have cracked the problem—his plants have
finally bloomed. Lance Corporal Colin Chapman filling in for
two absentees, (Sergeant Siddiqui and Lance Corporal Black-
hurst) has been grumbling because he thinks he should at least
get POHR as a Staff Sergeant.
Lately the Thursday afternoon controversial volleyball
competition made up of the Toffs (all officers) and the Scribes
(all Staff Clerks) came to a head with the Scribes hammering the
Toffs with no trouble.
We welcome back to the Unit Corporal Masham and Lance
Corporal Frayne who have both returned from an overpaid
six months detachment.
Finally, congratulations to Captain Wilson on promotion to
Major—we still await the beers!
A COMPANY. Peace and tranquillity descends—the merry men
of 4 Combat Supplies Company have disappeared on Crusader
under Command of Major Peter Scriven and herded into military
formation by CSM (Temp) Allan Smith. Before leaving, and
under the guise of A Company, they fought bravely to win
the Inter-Company volleyball competition. The ' real' CSM
(Tommy Flowers) was too worried about returning to old stomp-
ing grounds with 4 ADOC and managed to 'fix i t ' so that he
got on the exercise with 49 RP Company (Bicester Element). The
attractions of serving in a mixed Unit have proved too much
for Lance Corporal Bill Gordon and W/Lance Corporal Kathy
Easton; Private Barry Abbott and W/Private Kay Langston—
both couples are now married (no, not to each other) ' the
patch' being the winner. The remainder of the company are
now wishing they were in BAOR too, the extra duties have to
be experienced to be believed. The Admin Officer (Captain Chris
Hillier) is no help either as he stares vacantly into space dream-
ing up what he can be to disturb the tranquillity of the valiant
Crusaders on their return to the fold.
Corporal Tony Masham is back after the hardships of
Canada! The typewriter hadn't felt so needed and cared for in
ages. For ex A Company heroes—Private Hancock is back on
his bike, Lance Corporal Ryan is still off his. Private Hall has
now extinguished himself by being appointed the Battalion
Football Team Captain and must certainly retain the job after
the seven to one thrashing handed out to RAF in the first match
of the new season.
D COMPANY.
Congratulations to the following serviceworhen
on their weddings during August and September: Lance Corporal
Cath Easton to Lance Corporal Bill Gordon, Private Kay Lang-
ston to Barry Abbott, Private Pam Roberts to Eddie Anderson,
Private Hannah Boswell to Steve Morgan and Private Bev Spencer
to James McLaughlin.
300 years old six-a-side soccer team.
The following week, the Inter-Department six-a-side Hockey
tournament was held with the veterans from the Officers Mess
beating the youthful RPC team two one in the final. No photo-
graph here as the veterans were too ' shell shocked ' from their
efforts to be good photographic material.
Captain Wilberforce skippered a crew of three NCOs in-
cluding Lance Corporals Moorhouse and Vote, on an off-
shore adventure training exercise in the Solent. The wish for
fair weather was not fulfilled so an exciting weekend resulted.
When a shackle restraining the main sail boom snapped in a
force five wind, the mettle of the novice members of the crew
was tested and the Skipper was pleased to report that every-
thing was successful.
The Unit Full Fore Shooting Team departed for the Regular
Army Skill-at-Arms Meeting at Bisley. They left full of hope
and returned beaten but not bowed, some ten days later. During
the course of the shoot they acquired three medals for reaching
the semi-finals of the pistol tiles and a reputation for double
parking the team Land Rover. Out of the thirty five Units
contesting the Minor Unit Championship at Bisley this year,
COD Chilwell finished in twenty first position. The team con-
sisted of: WOs2 Steve Myers and 'Biff' Smith (REME), Staff
Sergeants Steve Sutton and Ken Haslam (REME), Private John
Swiderski and Lance Corporal Mitch Mitchell (Reserve).
Pursuing the Chilwell Garrison practice of a day in the
country, a group of officers and warrant officers recently took
part in a ' Dog and Stick ' walk in the area of Hathersage, Derby-
shire.
The morning walk was in two stages; the first involving a
climb to Stanage Edge, and a four hundred and fifty eight metres
Trig Point. The second stage took us down to the main road level
again and the Fox House Inn for lunch and a drink.
Following this, we walked south west through National
Trust country, past Robin Hood's Well, Little John's Well (could
not locate Maid Marion's), to Grindleford Station and the start
of the Totley Railway Tunnel. North again along the River
Derwent back to our transport on the A622 and returned to
Chilwell. A good day's exercise and a welcome change for desk-
bound operators.
We say farewell to Major Henry Ford who, after many false
alarms, eventually leaves us for Ashchurch. WOl (Conductor)
Baldwin and Corporal Scott from DSM and Privates Robinson
and Swiderski who join civvy street, W02 Stevens to Northern
