AFCENT
WITH the weather taking a turn for the
better, four departments of the United King-
dom Delegation and Support Unit (UKDSU)
decided to put aside their work for an after-
noon and take to the open air, submitting
themselves to a challenging three-mile run
on the Brunssum Heath. The main purpose
of the event was to get the widely dispersed
sections to meet each other through friendly
competition and then to enjoy a barbecue
afterwards with their families.
Representing the Corps was Lance
Corporal Ned Kelly taking part for the
Supply Flight and Corpora! John Allan who
competed for the General Office. Although
Corporal Allan was unplaced in the competition, after two
major stomach operations and several visits to Wegberg hospital
he showed great determination and stamina by even completing
the course. There is no truth in the rumour that his scar hides
new bionic ' innards' and that he is to become a sandwich
tester for British Rail!
It seems that we have a budding genius in our midst in the
person of Corporal Kevin Smith who passed out top of his
BII—I course recently at the Depot and Training Battalion,
Blackdown. Corporal Smith who works in the registry of the
UKDSU, received an 'A' grading with a score of ninety six per
cent. Congratulations on a fine effort.
A regular monthly contributor to our local paper The
AFCENT Mirror is Staff Sergeant Bill Barlow of Panda
Division, who with his wife Christine, keep the children amused
with their Kiddies Corner page. Bill, who has been writing
his column for the past twelve months, is also an avid organiser
of excursions to places of interest throughout Holland.
Finally, Corporal John Dickie of Supply Flight is leaving
us to join the Commando Brigade and welcome to Sergeant Tony
Catchpole and Corporal Ronald Young. Congratulations to
Corporal and Mrs Tydeman on the birth of their daughter.
Corporal John Allan the ' Bionic Man ' strides out on the Brunssum
Heath during the recent inter-dcpartmental cross country run.
He who must not be named has taken to cheering us up
with ' topical' jokes. The latest—to a Staff Clerk just having
failed his Bl typing, " I know your typing is improving hand-
over-fist but I think it is time you started using your fingers
as well!"
Headquarters Northern Army Group
OUR congratulations to Staff Sergeant
John Brewer on his promotion and on his
appointment as PA to COMNORTHAG.
We have said farewell to Corporal Kevin
Nicholson on posting out to the Ap-
prentices College, and welcome Corporal
Dave Wood. Dave is expecting an ad-
dition to his family soon, some people
will do anything to increase their LOA!
On the sporting side in the Head-
quarters NORTHAG Cross Country run,
we had two creditable runners in WOs2
Barry Quigley and Doug Boshier, who
finished third and tenth respectively. To
both of them, well done.
Our photograph shows Miss Tammy Garratt being presen-
ted with the Ladies fifty metres free-style 'winners' medal by
Major General Schunemann, Chief of Staff NORTHAG, at the
swimming gala held recently. Ten years old Tammy is the
daughter of our Chief Clerk EPS W02 Geoff Garratt. She
swam the fifty metres in under forty seconds.
Corporal Mick McNicol of G2 is to be congratulated on
his elevation to the Sergeants Mess.
