Transcription CAPTAIN N. D. FLETCHER
THE RAOC GAZETTE
NEIL FLETCHER entered RMA Sandhurst from Welbeck in
January 1969. After commissioning he successfully completed
the Commando Course in March 1971. His subsequent tour
with the Commando Logistic Regiment was interrupted by a
short attachment to the Gordon Highlanders in April 1972
and he went on to join the Training Battalion RAOC in January
1973 as a Platoon Commander. He will be remembered particularly
well by the many young recruits he trained from 1975 to 1977.
His skill and his superb fitness developed in the Commando
Forces made him particularly suitable for this appointment and
his prowess on the rugby field and the athletics track were an
example to all those of us who had the pleasure to serve with
him. It wasn't long before he was again wearing his green
beret with the Commando Logistic Regiment in Arbroath and
then Plymouth. His Food Technology Course qualified him for
his appointment as OC Supply Depot Northern Ireland which
is where his terrible illness was first diagnosed.
The months of tests, operations and treatment which
followed took a heavy toll on Neil but never robbed him
of his dignity nor of his sense of humour. He continued to be
an example to us all throughout this time until his peaceful
death on 23rd October 1980. Neil's behaviour in his adversity
has been matched by the strength and determination of his wife
Ann. Speaking for Neil's numerous friends and colleagues we
extend our deepest sympathies to Ann and Andrew for a loss
which we all bear.
