Transcription so many members of DSCS will not be able to get out and
about and visit quite so much. The Director is contributing to
the fuel economy and now uses a bicycle for getting to and from
work.
Recent arrivals to DSCS have been Lieutenant Colonels
Owen Brady and Mike John, Major John West and Staff
Sergeant Hendon. To all those we say welcome. We have said
farewell to Lieutenant Colonels John Nealc and Mike Hudson-
Peacock. Congratulations are in order for WOl Harrison and
Staff Sergeant Hendon on their substantive promotion.
Salome!
IN THE BEGINNING
There wasn't enough space to put the word Moratorium on the
camel so it was dropped.
off,on a big ferry to BAOR with their foreign cars. We wish
them and their wives, Moira and Elizabeth respectively, an un-
troubled future.
And now an AG9 donation from Cyprus, Major Tony Swift.
Welcome. We hope you manage to hold down the exacting ap-
pointment of S02 Engineers Group 4. Welcome also to W02
' Taff ' Tanner from BAOR.
Three confirmed sightings this quarter of Major Philip
Inman; one at the Garrison Stables and two at work. A busy
officer this one; OIC Garrison Stables. Secretary for Corps
rugby, amateur dramatical and ad hoc S02 Weapons 2. He's
in to the old two-briefcase-trick now you know; leaves one
permanently in his office, enquire as to his whereabouts and
you're told " he's in the building somewhere 'cos his briefcase is
here." More senior officers opt for the two-beret-trick.
Congratulations to Corporals Jim Hills-Avery and John
Williams on being selected for promotion to Sergeant.
Sergeant Alan Mellit gets yet another 'absolutely super'
this month; he's gained a Personal Survival Swimming Award
(Hons). Personally I cannot understand why people want to
swim in water. Fish make love in it you know.
Corporal Phil Maggs is to attend a driving course—hope-
fully on Benbecula. At his last attempt he struck the person of
a petrified MSO Guard who was minding his own business on
a parked moped outside FOD Dulmen gates.
Captain Graham, known as Telford Pete, is at home on
leave bagging-up more peat for sale. Major John Edwards is
editing the Garrison Fortnightly News and Major David Simmons
is still troubleshooting for Ironbridge Ceramics and wine member-
ing down at the Mess. Incidentally, never take tea with Major
Simmons. By the time you've drained you cup he'll have
flogged you the rest of the teaset.
And finally, it's nice to have Captain Brian Crawley back
with us. He's looking and feeling fine and enjoying his new
appointment of S03 Comms 3A.

SINCE arriving from Hong Kong W02 Mike Eden has spent
most of his spare time on the surrounding golf courses. It must
have been time well spent because he won the Brownlee Putter
at the Autumn Golf Meeting. Closer at home, our own internal
championships have been taking place for the Lawrence Trophy.
Major Paddy Shaw was beaten by WOl Bob Harrison in the
semi-final who then went on to beat the other semi-finalist, Mr
Bob Rainford.
The first RAOC Orienteering Champinships were held
recently and DSCS had some fine successes. Captain Linda
Kerley WRAC won the ladies event and the DSCS 'A' Team
gained third place in the RAOC Team Event. Notable achieve-
ments were Captain Bill Gaskin (fifth), Staff Sergeant Derek
Vale (tenth) and WOl Brian Coolin (twelfth).
Economy is the keyword at the moment and we are obviously
not the only organisation experiencing the affects of the mora-
torium and various cutbacks. Travel has been seriously affected

OUR eagerly anticipated reorganisation of accommodation was
completed during last month and one can still see the occasional
person wandering through corridors trying to locate someone
who apparently prefers to remain unmolested in their newly
acquired obscurity. The plan for the actual move seemed to
get overtaken by enthusiasm at times and the plea to exercise
self-help appeared to have been interpreted by some to mean
help-yourself. However, those of us who conveniently managed
to be elsewhere at the critical time got little sympathy in attempt-
ing to locate attractive items of furniture or office requisites which
we had previously had our eyes on for furnishing our new
offices.
The new entrance to Vauxhall Barracks and alterations to
the internal traffic route are almost complete, following the
restrictions on road transport recently imposed, one wag was
heard to say. " It's alright opening it, but when will we be
allowed to use it?"
Perhaps old Didcot hands will be pleased to hear of the
award to Robert Sessions who became the first winner of the
top award for Trainees in Storekeeping and received a trophy
at the Central Ordnance Depot Bicester. Robert, aged twenty,
is the son of Mrs Cyril Sessions of Foxhall Road; Mrs Sessions.
who is now widowed, was formerly Miss Pat Callaghan who
for many years served as a typist at the old COD Didcot and her
many friends at DLSA congratulate her and Robert on his
fine achievement.
Finally, we are delighted to convey our congratulations to
Colonel Peter Forshaw on his OBE. Colonel Forshaw took up
the post of Colonel LSA 2 at DLSA last month on completion
of a tour of duty as CATO Northern Ireland.
Training Centre
HEADQUARTERS
EXERCISE CRUSADER seems an age in history, but all our
one hundred odd umpires and reinforcements returned safely
to the more static life of the Training Centre. The only change
this month has been in the Commcen where Mrs Angie Snapc
has been replaced by Mrs Doris Dunn, the former will be
' producing' soon, good luck to her, and thank you for all
the excellent work at the Headquarters.
Major Peter Lewis RAEC has arrived in Training Systems
Advisory Branch, and formed part of the winning orienteering
team at the RAOC Championships, with Major Chris Brightman.
Captain Ted Walcroft and Sergeant Mick Binks of the Army
Apprentices College and School of Ordnance respectively. The
B team came second; they were Captain Terry Bunyard, Lieu-
tenant Philip Freeguard and Private Thompson of the Army
Apprentices College, and Sergeant Cooper of the Employment
Training School.
CENTRAL
VOLUNTEER
HEADQUARTERS
WE welcome the news that Brigadier Crawley has been ap-
pointed Honorary Colonel RAOC TA Sponsored Units, in
succession to Brigadier Dalton.
Crusader is now finished and the reports coming in from
all quarters show that RAOC TA Sponsored Units played a
very important part in providing logistic support. Three Petro-
leum Platoons, three Laundry Platoons. 154 Vehicle Platoon
and 40 RP Company took part in BAOR. and four Supply
Platoons were employed on refuelling duties at the Sea Transit
Centre at Colchester.
The setting up of Temporary Mobilization Centre No. 5
to document and pay nearly four hundred Volunteers went
without a hitch. Well done.
Staff Sergeant Jeff King and his helpers are to be con-
gratulated on raising over £137 for charity.
The Sponsored Units Shooting Team continued their run
of success by winning numerous trophies at the London/Middle-
sex Meeting—more silver to clean.'
