ASSOCIATION NEWS
Birmingham Branch
OUR branch annual dinner was held on 10th October in the
Captain Wilkinson Room of the Birmingham United Services
Club, for the first time. The guest of honour was Brigadier
Ray Thornton, and other guests included Brigadier Gordon
Dennison, and Yeoman Warder Brian D'Arcy.
Helped with a contingent of sixteen from the Shropshire
branch sixty nine people attended which is the highest number
for some years. We had an enjoyable evening, and this year
we did not forget to get an extension to drinking time. One
notable absentee was Brigadier David Morrison who un-
fortunately had to fulfil another engagement This was the
first of our dinners he had missed in fifteen years, but no doubt
we shall see him again.
Time once more to wish all readers of THE GAZETTE, and
especially any Brummies, a Merry Christmas and A Happy New
Year.
Leaving
the Army?
.. .we can of fer
a lot to someone
special like you!
Chilwell Branch
THE 1980 Annual Dinner and Dance was held on 3rd October
a happy company of some eighty plus members, friends and
guests shared in a most enjoyable evening of reminiscences,
friendship and fun at this ' family' get-together.
It has been customary for a number of years now for the
Chilwell Garrison Sergeants Mess to extend the use of their
admirable premises to Association members and we are most
grateful for this generous gesture of goodwill.
It was a particularly pleasant duty to welcome back, as
our Guest of Honour, Brigadier and Mrs D. H. Davis, this
being their first return to Chilwell since Brigadier Derek was the
Garrison Commander and Commandant COD Chilwell
(1969—72).
Once again our local Caterers supplied excellent fare, whilst
music was provided by the ' Summer Breeze' trio whose reper-
toire gave much pleasure and variety for all to enjoy.
During the evening, a raffle was held at which all the
prizes were contributed and as a result the Branch funds received
an acceptable boost
The success of the evening can be gauged from the fact that
most of the company stayed until the ' Last Waltz'—and con-
tinued chatting afterwards.
Your service training makes you a person of special
interest to us. In the Thames Valley Police we can
offer you variety, challenge and comradeship, working
in a skilled team covering the counties of Berkshire,
Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
A new future with good pay and prospects
Starting salary is £5919, if over 22. After some
experience there are many opportunities for
specialisation and promotion.
Modern accommodation is no problem — we provide
excellent free housing or a generous tax-free rent
allowance of up to £22 per week — a great help with a
mortgage! A police career also means job security and
a good pension at an early age.
Aldershor and Deepcut Branch
THE next social function of the Association will take place on
Friday, 5th December 1980, at 20.00 hrs in the Army Appren-
tices College. There will be a pay bar and a finger buffet, and
the Corps band will be in attendance. There is ample parking
space and the route will be well signed. All of the Corps and
their wives are welcome. Details from Major T. A. Glen on
Aldershot Civil 24431 extension Blackdown 839.
Shropshire Branch
OUR St Leger Dance and Draw was again a complete success
due to the fact that our members from far and wide came with
the intention of having a real good time and they did just that.
Whilst the ' serving military' support was good it is most
gratifying to see the increase in numbers of retired personnel
and to witness the enjoyment they have in re-newing old
acquaintances with whom they have served.
Brian Tinsley's Mirage Group knows how to keep them
happy and on the go! Members please note our next dance is
our Christmas ' Do ' on Thursday I lth December.
Seventeen of our Branch made the Annual Pilgrimage to the
Birmingham Branch Annual Dinner which this year was held
in ' The Wilkinson Room ' of the United Services Club. This
room was named in honour of Captain Ron Wilkinson who
tragically lost his life defusing IRA bombs in Birmingham.
Needless to say the Shropshire Branch stalwarts did not leave
until the bar closed at midnight despite the long trip home!
(Yes there was an emergency stop!)
, Finally a call to all ex ' Singaporeans': Alan Cleasby, Ron
Hart, Arthur Hawley, Vic (Darkie) Dodds, Archie Ritchie, Pete
Ness and of course yours truly Jock Forrest, invite you to join
them at the Association Annual Weekend at Kineton on the
28th/29th March. If you haven't got a live Branch near you—
write to me!
Wishing all our many friends everywhere, a Very Happy
Christmas and a Prosperous and Healthy New Year.
