SATO Department, assembled Thunderbird and prepared for the presentation by the SATO Staff Sergeant Ken Lee and their many workers. Our sincere thanks for all the hard work put into assem- bling Thunderbird II, now who is going to maintain it? Sadly we said ' godbye * to Brigadier Laurence Archer this month. He was dined out of the Officers Mess with great splendour; he will be greatly missed by all members of the Unit, and we wish him well in his * retirement.' On the sports scene, Kineton continues to do well in all winter fixtures. The hockey team has so far won six, drawn one and lost two of the first games of the season. The spear- head of the attack has been Corporal Pete Rosser who has been regularly bombarding the opposition's goal with shots and even scoring occasionally! WOl Ken Dickson has found him- self a regular member of the half back line and, although not exactly in the greyhound class, has proved a solid defender. The team has been lucky enough to get two byes in the first two rounds of the Army Major Units Cup. In the third round we are to meet MOD Army, The Inter-Company Boxing Competition was run during November. The contest proved that there are still many young men with plenty of "guts'* in the army today. The com- petition was eventually won by A Company, but the best match of the evening was between Corporal Jack Butler RAOC and Private Chris Curry RPC. The match resulted in Jack Butler being presented with the Most Promising Boxer Award at the end of the evening. All in all, the evening was most entertaining and has provided us with a hard core of boxers from which we can select our best team to go on to the Inter- Unit Boxing Competition at Bicester. Central Ammunition Depot Bramfey MAJOR GENERAL MINOGUE paid his farewell visit to Bramley. He had drinks in the Sergeants Mess and lunch in the Officers Mess, which was one of the best ever, followed by a farewell look at the real estate. Despite ever increasing difficulties in raising teams both the football and hockey teams have managed wins. The foot- ball team beat the Rifle Depot four to two in the league with Lance Corporal Phil Hussey getting three of the goals. They also beat RAMC Training Centre two nil in the SE District Minor Units Cup but lost six to one to 6 Field Ambulance in the league. The hockey team could only turn out ten men for the match against Bramshill Police College but still managed to win five to one, Lance Corporal Phil Hussey was again amongst the goals, getting four. We say farewell on discharge to Sergeant Walsh and Corporal Bryant and on posting to Sergeant Kerr (REME) and Lance Corporal Redfern. Congratulations to Corporal Jim Anderson and wife Rose on the birth of a daughter, Brenda, Central Ammunition Depot Longtown IN our previous GAZETTE Notes we promised some more in- formation on Captain Alan Glasby and his shooting prowess. Once he was assured we were not from the Inland Revenue he divulged the following facts: won the Queen's Medal in 1969, National Service Rifle Champion 1970, selected to fire with the Q ' O ' Highlanders team that won the CENTO small arms competition in 1971, the only British team ever to win this event. He was also the Army Three Positions Champion for three consecutive years (I hope that has to do with shooting). In 1977 Alan has represented Great Britain in the NORDIC Championships, European All Weapon Championships, European Small Bore Championships, European 300m Championships. He also was a member of the Army Team which won every event in the inter-services championship, obtaining one gold and two silver individual medals. These are Alan's proud achievements, but his frustration in life is trying to get his Doberman Pincher to act fierce and chase and not play with the * bunnies.* We were recently privileged to dine out the Commander Base Organisation in both the Officers and Sergeants Messes, and we wish the General and Mrs Minogue a very happy retirement. By the time these notes appear in print we will have said farewell to Major David Hatton, our SATO, en route to the land of 'Duty Free,' to Captain David Logan who is leaving the Service to teach budding * Dennis Healeys,' Corporal John Bassett to the School of Ammunition on promotion to Sergeant, Captain Alan C Lis by with a few of his trophies. WOl Peter Goodwin to Stores Sub-Depot Dulrnen. Our arrivals should be Major Charles Jackman and Lieutenant Ray Evans to whom we extend a hearty welcome and hope their stay will be a pleasant one. To all members of the Corps, their families and those associated with the Corps we extend the season's greetings and best wishes for 1978- Central Vehicle Depot UK HEADQUARTERS MAJOR GENERAL MINOGUE paid his farewell visit to the Headquarters and Vehicle Depot Ashchurch in November and presented Long Service and Good Conduct Medals to WOl D. C Molloy and Corporal Q King. Mrs Molloy and Mrs King, who were present at the ceremony, were each presented with a bouquet of flowers, Postings out this month are Captain H. T. Hayward our QM, off to MRO Leicester and SSMs R. Plenderleith and L Powell to Donnington, Postings in are Major W, McKinnon RAPC our new Management Accountant and Captain R. W. Budge, our new QM. VEHICLE DEPOT ASHCHURCH A Green Goddess is not, as thought by your correspondent, an alcoholic beverage containing Creme-de-Menth, but a type of elderly fire engine, the property of the Home Office. Some twenty of our soldiers have become quite intimate with these old ladies during the past few weeks as we have supplied the Royal Navy with drivers to help give fire fighting cover in Devon and Cornwall. The lads are working hard and it is reported held in high esteem by their Naval colleagues. No doubt we will soon be hearing a lot of * Firemans Tales/ Captain Mike Knight has finally made the break after a long stay in Ashchurch and is looking forward to his tour in Colchester. Captain Kip Gibson is off to Dortmund but just when is^ a closely guarded secret by Stanmore, He is, however, quite firmly convinced that Miss Germany, seen on TV in the recent Miss' World Contest, is an employee of the Barrack Charge in Dortmund—it's possible I suppose. Congratulations to SQMS Alan Tarsnane on his being selected for an LSL post in the recruiting organisation in Stoke on Trent. |
