Transcription sixty four runners headed by both Commanding Officers streamed
out of *A' Gate to plunge through the verdant pastures over
an approximate five mile course. Enthusiasm was high and
excellent results were achieved by both sides.
The old heads of Viersen performed valiantly and most
all finished high up the field, ensuring a good win for the unit
by 1224-pts to 1909. The Cross Country Officer's system of
marking is untranslatable, therefore results are simply as
follows:—Overall winner and first thirty to thirty four year old
Captain Andy Byles; Third Private Andy Gooderham; First
and second thirty five to thirty nine year old WOl Noel
Fletcher and Captain Bob Willox; First and second over
forty Major David Langdon and the CO, Lieutenant Colonel
Mike Connolly,
Ten Long Service and Good Conduct Medals at one presentation.
Just before the start of the great race.
The ever progressive Badgers are through to the Rhine
Area Minor Units Final for the second year running. We
defeated 10 Engineer Support Squadron in the semi-final by
sixteen to nil. RSM Jock Black has demanded character, aggres-
sion and the will to dominate, and has been rewarded greatly
in all departments. We, to date, have played thirteen games
and won ten. Two of our defeats were to major unit teams
and these were by the narrowest of margins.
There are
rumours that we are gunning for Big Brother Bracht and their
coruscation of stars. And I do so love a rumour. Not only
that—our Baggage Master, Private Trev Day, is of at least
Corps standard. We are go on all cylinders I
The Badgers.
WOl Ken Stuart and Sergeant Kevin Townsend are the
innocent victims of two traffic accidents in the same location
over a short period of time. Both cars were extensively damaged
by being shunted forcibly from the rear, and although both
men suffered no personal damages, the cars were in the first
instance written off and the second, mutilated. They both
now believe that boots are made for walking.
On the 3rd of November the Representative Colonel Com-
mandant visited the Unit and presented the Long Service and
Good Conduct Medal to ten Members of the Mess. I don't
know if this is a record but Guinness was part of the con-
versation after the presentation.
The photograph shows from left to right: WOl Brian
Downes, WOi Pete Collyer, WOl Noel Fletcher, W02 Keith
Bensley, W02 Ron Ward, WOl Clive Poison, Major General
A. R." Cornock, Staff Sergeant Enno Olden, Sergeant Dick
Butlin, Sergeant Roy Haslett and Sergeant Vernon Truss.
Our ladies are into netball and small bore shooting in no
small numbers. The 'Cannons/ our netball squad—to boot—
the Mrs Danuta Day, Doreen Bertram, Elaine Bradley, Sheila
Davison, Carol Balsdon, Carol Walton, Liz Charlton, Netta
Burke, Ren a Robinson, Val Gower, Yvonne Grogan and Marian
Clark, have suffered bruises and bumps under the tutelage of
Corporal Bing Crosby or ' M a r y ' as the girls have it.
The league season has started off well with a win in their
first game. Bigger audiences from husbands would be ap-
preciated by the ladies who really play adventurous stuff.
The Junior Ranks miss their NAAFI Manageress, Mrs
Ruby Lincoln, sadly in hospital in UK, and wish her both a
speedy recovery and return.
Her stentorian " Now, now,
Lads," lancing through the clamour of some minor Armaged-
don on the dance floor has stopped, not only the last great
battle but, many an Orderly Corporal going prematurely grey
and the doling out of punitive measures.
Mrs Betty Connolly, Dorothy Fletcher, Margaret Byles,
Helen Truss and Margret Macdonald are enthusiasts to rival
the skill of their male opponents in the small bore world.
The anomaly of cordite lightly garnished with "A Night of
Love," can be overlooked by the results achieved by the girls.
Margret is the Shropshire Women County Champion and she
and the others practise with conviction, weekly. A gentle
sport—and sweet performance to you girls.
Congratulations to Sergeants Mick Keates and Frank
Smith on their substantive promotion. Welcome WOl John
Hammond, Staff Sergeants Jim Diviney and James McLeod
(REME), Sergeants Bob Scott, Bill Oakley (REME) and Peter
John, and farewell to WOl Brian Ashton on discharge, W02
Pedro O'Hara, W02 John Mallett, Staff Sergeant Len Robert-
son, Sergeant Dinger Bell (REME), Sergeant Tommy Scott,
Corporal Jim Lane and Lance Corporal Trev Mayers.

MOENCHENGLADBACH
ONCE again we have been privileged to welcome many dis-
tinguished visitors. We were visited first by the Representa-
tive Colonel Commandant Major General Cornock, who took
the opportunity to meet many soldiers and present Long Service
and Good Conduct Medals to Staff Sergeant John Banner,
Sergeant David Wishart and Corporal Paddy Coughlan. Con-
gratulations to all recipients.
The C-in-C BAOR paid a fleeting visit and presented
Conductor Peter Reed with his Long Service and Good Con-
duct Medal in a ceremony in the Sergeants Mess. Naturally the
opportunity was taken by the assembled company to 'wet the
medal'!
Major Peter Gibson, OIC Technical Administration, and
known war historian has recently had a splendid article pub-
lished in the BAOR Newspaper * Sixth Sense * and your scribe
is asserting pressure on him to have the article reproduced in
THE CORPS GAZETTE! (We will be pleased to receive it.—Editor)-
