28 AMPHIBIOUS ENGINEER REGIMENT WORKSHOP
WITH
the winter days setting in here in Germany's historic
1
Pied Piper' town of Hameln, our Stores Section under the
command of WO I Harry Jones, is busy preparing for the forth-
coming Technical Inspection and our yearly autumn vacation,
nicknamed * Neptunes Trident/ As per usual for this time of
year our main bulk of work involves the long and tedious
lask of preparing our 'well used* cam nets, stock main-
tenance and trying to get our vehicles looking like new!
Sport is our next priority with Corporal McGaghey and
Lance Corporal Ramage taking a major part in our recent
seven to three win in the first round of the Craftsman's Foot-
ball Cup. Lance Corporal Hughes and Private Head are also
pushing for a place in the Workshop team.
Our one and only boxer, Private ' Rockay * Purves, has
succeeded in fighting his way into the Regimental team and
Corporal Dave Gartside and Private 'Teddy Bear' Welland
put up a good show for the swimming team in the 4 Division
Championship. Private ' E d d y ' Eddison is trying his hardest 1
to master the art of bowling and Lance Corporal * Old Man
Bailey prefers to be plain conscientious,
We welcome the following, Lance Corporals Bailey and
Ramage and Private Purves,
We say farewell to our Leader WOl (Aye) Jones whose
talents are required with Corps Troops Central and who also
received his well deserved Long Service and Good Conduct
Medal,
Taking his place in the hot seat we welcome our first
Officer to the establishment, Lieutenant P. Harris. May your
stay be a long and enjoyable one. Farewell also to Corporal
' Squeaky * Berret, Lance Corporal ' Nobby' Clark and Private
Brian Low. Congratulations to Lance Corporals Crago, Clark
and Hughes on their selection for promotion.

SIX members of the Unit, Staff Sergeant Holding, Privates
Martindale, Smith, Graham, Johnstone and Wynne spent two
weeks in the Mosel area working on the grape harvest. Each
individual was * allotted' to a different family which he worked
for and lived with as part of the family, and after discovering
what pack horses and mountain goats feel like, they also be-
came connoisseurs of Mosel wine. All-in-all, a most enjoyable
and enlightening experience and everyone on both sides ex-
pressed a wish for a repeat performance.
The ' Moroccan Marauders,' Sergeant Swift, Corporals
Ansen and Asher, Lance Corporal Da vies, Privates Gee, Naghten
and Wilson, led by the intrepid Captain Dewhurst have returned
from their month's climbing expedition having thoroughly en-
joyed themselves. Despite all efforts to lose * Killer' Naghten
in the desert, he survived and managed to make it back to
the Unit. The ' official* report of the trip will, no doubt,
be appearing in THE GAZETTE but the ' true' story, with all its
sordid details has already been told by Sergeant Swift over a
few beers.
Meanwhile, down in the MT jungle, nothing stirred. Pinky
and Perky (alias Knight and Smith) have been busy head-
scratching over the Driver Bill to BII course with their in-
structors doing likewise. Lance Corporal Scanlon has been
hard at it teaching a storeman how to drive and introduced
a real live accident for the trainee to practice his FMT 3
procedure on. Private McErlean, a new, unspoilt driver said
confidently:
"Yes, Sergeant, I know where it is, no trouble." He
returned from Wulfen, normally a four hour trip, eight hours
later saying, " Er, yes, I got lost"
Captain Shackleton took his WO and SNCOs, with wives,
out for dinner and a good time was had by all. The presenta-
tion ' Pot' took the said Captain by surprise but that is the
way things are done in the MT.
Up in PC and A, Lance Corporal Douglas has decided to
get married and he is travelling all the way to North Dakota
to do so. He's been heard late at night wandering around the
block singing, **Take me back to the Black Hills,'* Lance
Corporal Harrison is also disappearing to get married and we
wish both of them and their wives all the very best for the
future.
Sergeant Nowak and Private Connelly have both
complained that they did not get a mention in THE GAZETTE
when they arrived in the Unit quite some time ago so, iS hello."
We say goodbye to Staff Sergeant Donnery, Sergeant Swift,
Lance Corporal Douglas, and Privates Wilson and Lewis and
congratulate Lance Corporal Perrott and wife, on the birth of
their son.

BAOR.
WOl Brant the AOWO and Sergeant Greenacre have been
down to Rheindahlen to play in the RAOC BAOR Badminton
Championships. It is understood they performed better than
they expected; WOl Brant and partner reaching the semi final
stage in the Mixed Doubles and Sergeant Greenacre the Men's
Singles.
It is now the inspection season and this adds to the variety
of life in the Headquarters particularly Materiel Section who
have the burden of arranging the inspection programme. With
all the dashing about it is rumoured that Major Dempsey js
considering taking the DGOS fitness challenge. He may be
seen in the dim light of evening on the Golf Course or Rugby
pitch building up his stamina.
We welcome Sergeant Bowker and Corporal Hurley and
hope they have a successful and happy tour. We have also
said goodbye to Staff Sergeant Pat Hamilton (congratulations
on promotion) and to Corporal Daly.
A branch dinner was organised at a local Gastatte to say
farewell to Staff Sergeant and Mrs Hamilton. The food was
excellent and the evening most enjoyable. The recommendations
of all those who attended was that the evening should be
repeated at the same venue.
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of
Major Ray Greenwood, OC, of the Stores Section attached 23
Base Workshop on Wednesday 23rd November. Our deepest
sympathies are extended to his family in their bereavement
86 SUPPLY DEPOT
AT last we have found time between inspections, visits, and
work study projects to put pen to paper and inform the world at
large of the goings on in this Depot.
The Chief Clerk (Admin), Norman Eldridge is posted to
HQ AMF on promotion to Staff Sergeant and in his place we
have Corporal Barry Humphrey elevated to the rank of Sergeant.
In place of Corporal Humphrey we have the dreaded * short-
fall.'
Captain Harness has finished his PQS2 exam and eagerly
awaits the results. He has also been blessed with a daughter
Sarah Helen, congratulations to him and to his wife. Perhaps
more will be seen of him now.
Captain Harness and Corporal Humphrey both participated
in Exercise Plain Sailing and appeared to have enjoyed the
experience. Sergeant Bill Bovenizer has returned from Cyprus
for a short stay in Dortmund's sunny climes and is away again
in December back to Cyprus for another two years holiday.
Staff Sergeant Stan Stoker, our new CQMS, has decided
to stay with us after arriving from Berlin, but it is felt he must
kick his nomadic quartering habits.
Staff Sergeant Brian
Fatchitt arrived, and left, before his boots marked the carpets,
on promotion to CSM and posting to 7/11 Ordnance Field
Park.

The Representative Colonel Commandant is shown round during
his visit. What that poor egg had done wrong we were unable
to ascertain.
