OPERATIONAL AWARDS FOR

HANG
GLIDING
IN
GERMANY
THE Blue Aguila (Moenchengladbach) Hang Gliding Club held
their Eiffel Pokal Meisterschaft meeting at Rockeskyl) and
several hundred spectators turned up despite the intermittent
rain and low cloud. Flying commenced with the sole British
representative, W02 Bill Cowell, Vehicle Sub-Depot Moenchen-
gladbach Chief Clerk, leading the way on his Wasp Falcon
Mk 4. The competition got under way when the Club's President
flew down to the landing field, a kilometre from the start point,
and placed the target, an 18-inch square of white linen, on the
stubble.

xixxmzmm,
The first flier off landed well outside the twenty five metre
circle surrounding the target, and in which one had to land
to score. Next was Bill Cowell, and his fast level approach
seemed to be the answer to the freak swirling gusts of wind at
ground level, for he hit the button right on, and scored two
hundred and fifty points to put him straight into the lead
His second flight an hour later was a repeat performance and
he went into round three with a five hundred points maximum
score. At this stage, however, the fates looked round for a
moment and his take-off was almost a disaster when—only a few
yards out from the cliff face take-off point, a gust of wind
lifted his starboard wing and put him into a steep dive towards
the jumbled rocks and shrubs a hundred feet below. Having
learned his flying in the mountains of Scotland where treacherous
air currents are part and parcel of the everyday flying scene, he
increased his head down angle still further until he was only
a few feet from the rocks and then flared steeply out-wards
from the hill face. On landing, this time seven feet from the
target, spectators pointed out the blades of grass and shrub
leaves still caught up in his port wing wires, silent testimony
to just how close that dive had been. The same unstable winds
also hit his closest rivals and both landed over fifty yards from
the target; only one flier apart from W02 Cowell, managed
to land within the scoring circle in this round. Two pilots failed
to cross the Autobahn and river, and grounded at the foot of
the take-off hill itself amid an acre or two of thorns and furze!
OUR congratulations to the recipients whose awards reflect not
only great credit on themselves but also on the Corps.
VISIT OF THE COLONEL-IN-CHIEF
HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN has accepted an invitation to
visit the Corps to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the amalga-
mation of the Army Ordnance Corps and Army Ordnance
Department to form the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. 1978
is also the 25th anniversary of Her Majesty's Colonelcy-in-
Chief.
The visit is to be on Tuesday 16th May and will take the
form of a visit to Bicester Garrison where Her Majesty will see
elements of her Corps at work together with a display of other
aspects of Corps activity in the United Kingdom.
Full details of the programme will be given in THE
GAZETTE as soon as they are announced,
MAJOR GENERAL G. T, W. HORNE
CB CBE
IT is with regret that we have to record on page 268, the death
of Major General Home. An obituary will be published in the
March issue of THE GAZETTE.

After lunch, which was brought forward due to heavy
rain and low cloud, it became evident that no flier was going
to be able to pass Bill Cowell's score in the fourth round so
he watched the remainder of the day's flying—and had his
picture taken by hundreds of spectators. The silver trophies
were presented by the local beauty queen—together with a kiss.
