* Open Individual Competition Winner: Major Woodliffe, CVD Ashchurch; Runner-up: Sergeant Bradley, Employment Training School. Novices Competition Winner: Sergeant Wallis, 3 BAPD; Runner-up: Corporal Armstrong, Bicester. Under Nineteen Competition Winner: Private Cowley, CAD Kineton; Runner-up: Private MacLean, Headquarters South West District. Inter-Unit Competition Winner: Blackdown; Runner-up: 1 AIDU. Plate Competition Winner: Staff Sergeant Bailey, 1 AIDU; Runner-up: Lance Corporal Seton, 3 BAPD. THE CORPS SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS THE Corps Squash Championships took place on the Black- down Courts; the ever increasing popularity of the game was reflected in a record entry this year. Over fifty individuals entered the various competitions and eleven teams competed for the inter-unit trophy. We were particularly pleased to welcome the teams from 1 Combat Supplies Battalion and 3 BAPD, who had made the journey over from BAOR. They did not return empty handed :md we hope that their example will be followed by others in 3AOR next year. The climax of the championship was reached on the third day after two days of triumphs and upsets, expectations and dis- appointments. In the under nineteen competition, Private Cowley of CAD Kineton had a comfortable win over Private MacLean of Headquarters South West District to repeat his success of last year. The Plate Competition was taken by Sergeant Bailey of t AIDU after a hard fought three to two win over Lance Corporal Seton from 3 BAPD. In the Novices Competition Sergeant Wallis of 3 BAPD stormed through four rounds with- out dropping a game to reach the final against Lance Corporal Armstrong from Bicester. Wallis' three nil victory is not a true reflection of the closeness of the two players in what was a good, hard hitting, final. Both men have tremendous potential in the game and will be future Corps players. THE ARMY INTER-CORPS SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIP THE Inter-Corps Squash Championships took place in early December at Aldershot. The Corps entered as defending Cham- pions with a strong team consisting of Sergeant Robbie Robinson the Army No. 2, WOl Frank Linnane from HQ 1 (BR) Corps Bielefeld, Major John Woodliffe from Ashchurch, Major Ted Champion from 20 OFP in BAOR and Major Stewart Bennett from Kineton. Major Bennett stepped in for Sergeant Dave Bradley of the Employment Training School Blackdown, who unfortunately sustained a severe injury whilst fire training with a Green Goddess on the very first day of the Com- petition. Our first two matches against the APTC and Royal Engineers were narrow two to three defeats. Bradley's presence may well have turned these into three to two wins, A noteworthy win was Robinson's three nil defeat of Sharkey in the APTC match. We had a comfortable five nil win over the RAC followed by a good three to two win over the Royal Artillery team. In this last match Robinson beat Wilson the Army No. 3 witi a convincing three nil win. Champion fought with great tenacity to win three to two and Bennett narrowly lost by two to three. The team was presented to the DGOS, whom we were pleased to welcome to the Championship. We won last year, but didn't this year. However, we came a creditable third. Look who came fourth! The Gunners—and they normally win every year—or used to! Details of our position in the Inter-Corps table is as follows: Division I—RE (winners 1977); APTC; RAOC; R A ; RAC (relegated). Division 2—Household Division (promoted); Royal Signals; RCT; REME; Queen's Division (relegated). Division 3—Prince of Wales Division (promoted); RAMC; RAEC; Parachute Regiment; AAC. RAOC BAOR SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS The prire winners after the presentation* The seeding of the Open Individual Competition worked out as expected. Sergeant Bradley of the Employment Training School reached the final after beating Staff Sergeant MacLean of 6 Field Force Ordnance Company. The other finalist was Major Woodiiffe after his defeat of Major Bennett from CAD Kineton. Major WoodlirTe's superior skill and experience was no match for Sergeant Bradley and he took the title with a three nil win. The Inter-Unit Competition saw the emergence of a strong team from 6 Field Force Ordnance Company. The trio of Captain Robinson, Staff Sergeant MacLean and Corporal Sumner reached the semi-final after convincing wins over 3 BAPD and South West District. They were narrowly beaten into the final by the stronger Blackdown side of Sergeant Bradley, Cap- lain Kerr and Major Brett. The final proved to be a foregone conclusion with a win for Blackdown against the t AIDU team. Brigadier G. E. Dennison, Commander RAOC Training Centre, presented the prizes to the following winners and runners-up: — THE RAOC BAOR Squash Championships were held in December on the Rheindahlen Garrison court. Numbers were once again an increase on the previous year and there is no doubt that enthusiasm amongst our junior ranks is having a good effect on entries. So much so that the Secretary has been canvassed to hold an Officers* Championship next year just to give them a chance! A lot of new faces dominated events this year and we should be able to produce a fairly strong BAOR side to play RAOC UK in March. The results were: — Individual Open Championship—Winner: Lance Corporal Montgomery, 80 Supply Depot; Runner-up: W02 Patchitt, 7 Ordnance Field Park, Soldiers' Open Championship—Winner: Sergeant Wallis, 3 Base Ammunition and Petroleum Depot; Runner-up- W 2 Patchitt, 7 Ordnance Field Park. Plate Competition—Winner: Lance Corporal Luxton, 3 Base Ammunition and Petroleum Depot; Runner-up: W 2 Gallagher, Headquarters BAOR, Inter-Unit Team Competition—Winners: 3 Base Ammuni- tion and Petroleum Depot; Runner-up: RAOC HQ BAOR. THE BARI CUP HOCKEY FESTIVAL THE dates of the above festival have had to be altered to the 23rd-24th March—due to a clash with other Corps sporting activity- — 271 — {Continued on page 273) |
