Headquarters BAOR
FOR nearly a year now, visitors to Ordnance Directorate could
hardly have failed to notice in the ' Ordnance Mile ' corridor
a black labrador who answered to the name of * Simba.' Now,
alas, all is quiet as the impending posting of his owner, Captain
Adrian Stone, has meant that Simba has had to do time in
kennels in the UK in order to meet his posting deadline at
Kineton in April Our photograph shows ADOS (Materiel)
and some of his staff saying farewell to their mascot. Lieu-
tenant Colonel John Shircliff nearly found himself on his way
to quarantine but was recognised just in time! The tin of Pal
and two NAAFI pies were the menu for Simba's ' dining out.'
Arrivals: Lieutenant Colonel J. A. S. Rees, Staff Sergeants
K. A. Fowler and P. M. Collins, Sergeant M. E. Bailey, Corporal
T. G. Allison and Lance Corporal E. J. B. Hawkins.
Departures: Staff Sergeant P. C. Russell, Sergeants J. King
and G. C. Baines and Corporal A. D. Thomson.
It is noticeable that Captain Dick Jordan is walking with a
bounce in his step once again, could it be that now Staff Pro-
motion Exams are past, the weight of knowledge has been lifted,
—or is it the news that an eighteen month accompanied tour in
Cyprus is due to start in February?
Meanwhile Captain David Caldwell will be deposting for
48 AMF(L) and will have enough time to draw his kit before
departing for Norway a day later! Two such lucky ATOs.
The Unit children's Christmas party was held in the Duck and
Shovel organised by Mrs Fiona Caldwell, Mrs Iris Pearce and
Mrs Jenny Crisp. Films were provided by Corporal Hank
Bellamy husband of our cleaner Chris, He also brought along
his banjo and guitar and with the assistance of Corporal John
Frew, accompanied the kiddies in a glorious sing song. A visit-
ing Womble in the disguise, of Sergeant Bing Crosbie enter-
tained, and lost a stone in weight in the process. However,
with the arrival of Father Christmas he had a rest and assisted
in the handing out of gifts. Corporal Steve Cox of RMP Her-
ford, husband of our typist Wendy, played Father Christmas
very convincingly much to the delight of the children.
Since last month we have welcomed W 2 Eddie Weeks and
look forward to meeting his wife very soon, we hope that their
stay will be a pleasant one.

BAOR Ammunition
Inspectorate
TIME flies when you're having fun. December was highlighted
by the visit of Colonel Stone and Major Attwood for our DLSA
Specialist Inspection. During the visit the inspecting officer at-
tended, as guest of honour, our Inspectorate Christmas Party. The
inspection il wash-up" gave a good indication of what we
should expect (?) in the report and it gave Major Attwood a
chance to put forward some new ideas on ** Licencing," WOl
Peter Dandy now has a job for life. The Christmas party was a
resounding success and Major Bruce Owen took the opportunity
of saying farewell to Staff Sergeant Jim Unsworth and Private
Frank Gillman. We wish them both luck in their new postings.
Meanwhile Corporal Bob Trude was able to hand on the
" Gronker of the M o n t h " award to Sergeant Curly Thynne
whose only crime was to be at Paderborn when he should have
been at Lippstadt, a near miss of about thirty kilometres.
Jim Unsworth, not one to let a farewell go by without a
*' stag night," invited the Unit to " have a drink with him " and
after suitable lubrication the host was marched into the Division
Courts Martial Centre (part of our accommodation) and even-
tually found guilty of being the "Phantom flasher of Bad
Salzuflen." After which he asked for 2003 other offences to be
taken into consideration!
STORES SUB-DEPOT
VIERSEN
LOCAL Ex Employees of the Unit and young orphans of
the Fanny Zahn Heim have been entertained by the Jocks* to
sticky buns, pop, gift parcels and a visitation by St Nikolaus. In
the Depot, dependants and locally employed alike, have had
festive libations to wash down the myriad finger buffets prepared
by the Cornucopian largesse of the aforementioned Jocks.
The Annual Christmas Draw and Dance of the Junior
Ranks Club was held in the Civilian Canteen and all who at-
tended enjoyed themselves mightily. To see the guests arrive
to be met at the door by table hosts, then danced off their feet
by the young bloods, go forward in order by table numbers and
finish up being escorted to their transport, gladdened the heart
of old soldiers present and bodes well for the next generation
of the Sergeants Mess.
The Unit hockey team has slipped from the Rhine Area
Cup when they were beaten by a fine COD Dulmen team two
to one after extra time.
The Badgers have, however, beaten their arch rivals 14
Topo Squadron Royal Engineers in the Rhine Area Cup Final
in a very exciting game by nineteen points to thirteen. Staff
Sergeant Tiny Davison was monumental in the lineout and in the
loose, whilst Sergeant Bob Scott was utterly ubiquitous in
knocking down the opposition. We have since beaten 12
Armoured Division Workshop in the quarter final of the BAOR
Cup and will only be content when we receive the Big Shield
at Bad Lippspringe on the 15th February. We also had our
mid-season dinner and dance in the 89 Supply Depot club room
where we entertained Captain Des Townsend, Secretary Rhine
Area, and WOl Alex and Mrs Olive Baird, Rhine Area represen-
tative of ARURS. A super do—we hope the harbinger of many
more.
Congratulations to Captain John Dunn on being presented
with the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. The photo-
graph shows the Commandant, Colonel Edwards, with Captain
and Mrs Dunn after the presentation. Congratulations also go
to Sergeant Jack Ventress and Corporal Mick Mullen on their
acting promotion.
We welcome WOl Les Cooper, Privates Steve Broster and
Jeff Lewis, and say farewell to WOl Joe Murray to CAAT
Iran, W 2 Jim Dyer to 32 Guided Weapons Workshop, Staff
Sergeant Ralph Gothard to Headquarters British Forces Belize
on Detachment, Sergeant Mick Roche to 10 Ordnance Support
Battalion, Private Phil Golden to Donnington, and Private Don
King on discharge.
