this was not so easy (although he managed to keep smiling). We then moved on to an improvised assault course where Lance Corporal Arnison found out how heavy a ten lonner tyre isβ when one fell on him. The third event also looked deceptively easy, pushing a Land Rover full of radio equipment one hundred yards. In this event it looked as though W02 Matthews was in need of nourishment as he tried chewing the rear bumper of a Land Rover The fourth event was one to test initiative. Three logs and'five men had to bridge a gap between two t two ton tankers. Being intelligent Ordnance soldiers this proved to be no problem at all. The final event was a log race, at this stage not many competitors felt like walking Jet alone running with a log. Lance Corporal Mansfield and his team from the Workshop Stores Platoon showed their stamina by showing the rest of the field a clean set of heels and romped in first with a very commanding lead. The Workshop Stores Platoon narrowly won the competition, although it was rumoured that they had practiced for the last four weeks. There is very little to report on the sports scene, we played 1 Combat Supplies Battalion at rugby and managed to get quite a comfortable win. On the domestic front there have been two births in the unit T Lance Corporal and Mrs Hills had their first child, a boy, which they have named John Michael. Lance Corporal and Mrs Punchard also had a boy which they named Robert John. Our congratulations go to both couples. 5 Field Force Ordnance Company ^ ^ ^ ^HuM?^^- ^^EmJL^H^k^^^^ ^HHjU^^^^^^^feto^^^ ^KflK^^^^^^^^^^^^feh^^. JANUARY has been a month of what higher authority described as turbulence. We have two our ^HQBEZ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Privates Eddie Cooper ana WS&m&^^^^^^^^^^^ * Terry Stokes; two R^^JR^^^^^ technical clerks also ^ ^ ^ ^ left β Staff Sergeant Mick Mullarkey and Corporal Bob Cox who, between them, managed to look very similar to Laurel and Hardy! From the store side, we lose our stalwart Warrant Officer in charge, Q Dennis Falcus, who is going down the road to Wulfen on well deserved promotion. 1 suspect the usage of paint will increase at 154 FAD! From the nerve centre of the unit we lose Sergeant Stu Shaw RAPC. Last of all the Officer Commanding has decided to shake the dust (or is it mud) of BAOR from his boots and head for pastures greener in Headquarters UKLF. To Major David Watt and his family, as well as the families of those previously mentioned, we wish good luck. Not unnaturally a flock departing results in a flock arriving. In reverse order this time may we extend a welcome to Major AJan Norman-Bailey and his wife; to W02 Paddy Starrett and family. Sergeant Paul Eldred and Privates Windsor and Samuel. It is hoped your tour here with us will be a happy one, The other main news of the month concerns our much maligned football team. They have now gone six matches without defeat. They at present are through to the semi-final of the DOS Cup and the First Round of the Mini Minor Units Cup. Watch this space for further developments as it is rumoured there is a spare slot in Argentina later this year. Finally many congratulations to Lance Corporal and Mrs Nobby Hall on the birth of their son, Nathan John, at BMH Munster on 23rd January. STORES PLATOON 15 FIELD WORKSHOP IT has been a year or so since we last subscribed to our illus- trious journal, and many changes have happened since then, not least being our move from Catterick in Yorkshire to our present location. Because of the move the last year has been a busy one taking over from 6 Field Stores Section who are now dis- banded, and it's not finished yet, but we have had our light moments too. W02 Keith Williams will long be remembered for his joke book and his barbeques held out in the wilds of Handorf. Keith left us last August to move across to 87 Supply Depot. We entered a competition raft race last summer held on a local canal, all entries were home made, true we didn't win, but then we didn't sink either despite efforts at sabotage from various submerged officers of the unit Our feeling of safety may or may not have been increased knowing that the oars of the life boat were in the hands of Lance Corporal Eddie Lamon, but a good, if wet day (inside and out) was had by all. We have had various departures and arrivals, W02 Keith r Williams. Lance Corporal Eddie Lamon, W 02 Danny Danvers and Lieutenant Trevor White (don't go blowing yourself u p ) We wish them and their wives all the best in their new units, We welcome Lieutenant Tony Evans, Staff Sergeant Kevin Rear- don and Private Steve Prowen. we hope they enjoy their stay. We also say farewell for a time to Staff Sergeant R n Ferguson, Lance Corporal Beech, Privates Steve Prowen and Alan Esselmont who have left us for a tour in Ireland with I Field Workshop. We wish them all well and a safe return in July. Combat Supplies Battalion MUCH activity is going on on the second floor of Building 8 of Barker Barracks, 49 Company have finally been given the go ahead to move to Obernkirchen. Needless to say the OC, Major Bradley, is not often caught behind his desk these days! I'm. sure that is because he is shortly to hand over to Major Steele and not because he has gone to Obernkirchen as we are always told. Ski-ing is also still pretty well to the fore in the form of Exercise Snow Queen and the 3 Armoured Division Quadrant Ski Meeting in Austria. Captain Cox our MTO,, has just returned to the fold after six weeks as Administration Officer in the Ski Hut. He keeps insisting that it was hard work but we don't really believe that. Major Knipe, OC 44 Company, departed to assume the duties of OC Ski Hut for two weeks. Rumour has it that he didn't do so well on the slopes and is now almost desk bound. Major Gerdes was not to be put off, he cheerfully went, com- plete with family to take up the reins for the next two weeks. Captain Taylorson, Second Lieutenant Groves, Privates Thomas, Cone and Bogo have spent the last six weeks train- ing for the 3 Armoured Division Ski Meeting, held in Isgahl in Bavaria. Although they did not win this event they gave a good account of themselves. Strange goings on can be seen in Barker Barracks in the shape of RSM Stephen and his soccer team in track suits under- going rigorous training for the football season. They managed to draw four all against 5 Field Force at Munster; the return match was held at Barker Barracks and after extra time, 5 Field Force managed to get the one goal required. A good effort/ by all who played. ( Major Hawkins, our SATO, reports that the Battalion \ Small Bore Shooting team is doing exceptionally well in the 3rd and 4th Armoured Division Championships and are currently leading the RAOC BAOR Target Rifle and Service Rifle Winter Leagues. In addition to this they are the leaders in the Army Winter League Second Division and are also runners up in the BAOR Inter Unit Championships. Arrivals: Corporal Anderson, Lance Corporal Douglas, Privates Nisbett, England and Bay lift Departures: Lance Corporal Wharton, Privates Wilmot and Servante, Congratulations to: Corporal and Mrs Daly and Private and Mrs Westwood on the arrival of their sons. Fortress Headquarters Gibraltar JOIN the RAOC and see the world. Perhaps it's a laugh among other Corps the idea of being able to get overseas postings. We are more fortunate than the rest, but there are some who have even better luck. Private Shuan Gavin is a case in point. Posted to Gibraltar for a nine month tour, quite content to sweat it out until one day the FOWO, WOl Marc Moody, approached and asked "How would you like to go on a cruise to Madeira?", Silence descended on the office! It all started a few days previously when FOWO was on his normal * good will' tour of HM ships, in particular HMS Jupiter. Having guided the Chiefs Mess around Lower St Michaels Cave, everyone had retired to the Mess to relax. In the course of conversation the Chief Writer (Chief Clerk in our parlance, apparently they have writers and non-writers aboard!) bemoaned his fate that they were sailing to Madeira and his writer had been locked up ashore for some misdemeanour, you know what sailor's are, and he would have to type out ships orders himself. " Well," said FOWO " Say I loaned you a clerk?" remember- ing that Private Gavin had been complaining the day before about lack of work. 328 β |
