COMPOSITE ORDNANCE DEPOT THE following is an extract from ihc Concise Oxford Dictionary and may be taken as the situation appertaining in Hong Kong in the last days of 1977 and the early days of 1978: Socialise: Make social, arrange soeialistically. Masochism: Form of perversion in which sufferer derives pleasure from pain Synonym: Word identical and coextensive in sense and usage with another of the same language. Paraphrasing the Senior Member of the Sergeants Mess, replying to the Commanding Officer in the Officers Mess: " W e thank the Commanding Officer and Officers of the Mess for their hospitalization. 1 * The highlight of the SPSD Christmas activities was a children's party held in the Taipan Club. Catering arrange- ments were left entirely in the hands of the ladies who provided a magnificent spread. The Armed Services Food Chemist Mr David Jenkinson, removed from his natural environment of test tubes and taste panels, became a clown for the day to organise the children's games. Unfortunately, the make-up proved difficult to remove and over Christmas he walked around with red cheeks and a red nose—rather like someone who drinks too much. The identity of Santa Claus has been classified secret—but only children who have lived all their lives in Geordieland could understand him. The entire affair was pro- duced and directed by Messrs Woolhouse, McNaught and Williams. Captain Roger Bensaid is on leave in Australia—hope the blood does not rush to his head. He promised to find out if the apples really do fall upwards from the trees. As expected W02 Joe Campbell arrived back for work after the Christmas Grant a day earlier than everyone else. But he is keen. The photograph of the Unit boat should substantiate our claim to have stumbled on a foolproof method of preventing boat hulls becoming barnacle encrusted. Corporals Mould and Miller are practising the Martial Arts on an Aikido Instructors' course—if they pass we shall call them Chop and Stick. Continued from page 306. THE BRITISH ARMY 1965-1980 OSPREY PUBLICATIONS have issued a new book titled The British Army 1965—1980. It is a survey of current and recent service and combat dress of the majority of British Regiments and Corps. The author is Major D. G. Smith RAOC, and the book is illustrated in colour The absence of any other comprehensive book on the subject should ensure a market providing the in- formation does not date too quickly. The look into the future at the possible Service Dress of the 1980*s is interesting but somewhat reminiscent of the US Army of the 1940*s. However, I understand that the two shades of brown illustrated have now been changed to olive green. The/ price £2.25 from the publishers 12-14 Long Acre, London WC2E 9LP. \ RAOC SKI NOTICE TO ASSOCIATION MEMBERS THE Ski Hut at Nethybridge is available for bookings by family groups for the 1978/79 season through: —Major R. RAOC RIFLE MEETING THE RAOC Rifle Meeting will be held at Ash Ranges on 7th—12th May, 1978. The boat that never gets wer. FOR Exercise Lantau Wander was completed on the weekend of 20th/22nd January. Perhaps the * Legion of the Lost* would have been a more appropriate title, or * Napoleon's Retreat from Moscow.* For the benefit of those not acquainted with Lantau Island it might be fair to explain that it is completely surrounded by water, very high in places and very low in others. The exercise consisted of ' walking (often on all fours) from one low place to another, encompassing all the high and lows between, in forty eight hours/ Staff Sergeant Steve Bonta displayed a decided lack of ecological forebearance by refusing to share his sleeping bag with a friendly but smelly rat, which moved off into the night with a less than high opinion of homo sapiens. Staff Sergeant Charlie Smith, in emulation of his intrepid Scots explorer ancestors, went from Grid Reference A to Grid Refer- ence B without the aid of a map and was rather put out to find himself on top of what he should have been below. Everyone managed to get back to the pick-up point, but there was a definite aura of subdued sun-burn on the bus on Monday morning. SALE THREE piece mess kit, eighteen months old, worn twice. To fit chest 38-in, waist 33-in, inside le& 30+-in, height 5-ft SHu. £60 ono. T e l : Aldershot Military ext 470. Sergeant Moor- house, 6 Field Force Ordnance Company, Montgomery Lines, Aldershot — 330 — RAOC SECRETARIAT ONE of the objects of the Secretariat is to keep all who are now serving, or have served, in the Corps, abreast of Corps events and to advise on Corps domestic affairs. It is hoped that as many as possible will take the opportunity of visiting the Secretariat whenever they are in the vicinity of Deepcut, to see for themselves how such affairs are being handled. |
