MILLER (RETD) writes: — The many friends of Bernard Chandler will have been saddened by the news of his untimely death in the Cambridge Military Hospital on 23rd April 1977. He entered Sandhurst in 1938 and was commissioned into the Royal West Kents with whom he saw active service. Following a grave illness which left him with a serious disability, he transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in which his father, Cecil, was a serving officer. During his service the Corps benefited from his exception- ally wide knowledge of vehicles and stores and it was mainly in appointments in these fields that he served in BAOR, Cyprus, Malaya and the United Kingdom. Throughout his service Bernard Chandler was a keen supporter of Corps activities and in addition, for many years he played a prominent part in the Boy Scout Movement both at home and overseas. Following his retirement in 1973, he assumed a Retired Officer appointment at Headquarters South East District where he was able to apply his wide experience of Ordnance affairs. In recent years he was keenly interested and played an active part in sub-aqua sport. Indeed it was only a few months since he returned from a diving holiday in the Seychelles. At the time of his death Major Chandler was the Honorary Treasurer of the Corps Sub Aqua Club and of the Aldershot and Deepcut Branch of the RAOC Association- On behalf of his many friends and associates in the Corps sincerest condolences are extended to Bernard's charming wife Etta, his daughters Katrina and Jennifer, and his parents Cecil and Ivy. 2 — |
