Transcription The first excitement was the race of 17th for the V/RAC
Novices and Apprentices. The Corps was well r e p r e s e n t the
Apprentices College had for the first time entered tw<, ^ams
Most Unit teams had novices in the race and W i W . "from
Donnington and elsewhere were welt in the running; Wcond
Lieutenant Helen Beazicy being well to the fore with * good
chance of an Army Open prize. The course was set in L/„re na
Ciste and ran for seven hundred metres through iwentv ^ven
gales. The weather was windy and overcast with .sligh* fresh
snow on a soft base. The skiers raced all day, the Apprentices
trying to overcome the injuries of the previous day and -,y the
end of the day, had gained eighth place with the Apprentices
' B ' team not finishing, A very creditable team time oi' 4.56.15
seconds was obtained. Helen Beazley came second overall with
a time of 1A6.23, just .98 seconds behind the winner. Our
greatest triumph of the day was winning the Army Novices
Prize. Private Shepherd, although he came twenty sixth in the
race with a time of 1.31 seconds, was the fastest Novice it the
Meeting and deservedly won the Army Prize, the first Army
Prize that a Corps skier had won at this Scottish Meeting.
Success was reinforced when WRAC Private McCamont. from"
COD Bicester, took the Regular WRAC Novice Prize No
doubt these two ' firsts* resulted from the ski training now
offered to Corps skiers at the RAOC Ski Hut.

Apprentice Corporal Pollock going well
than 1.7.4 seconds. When the final results were analysed, the
1977 Downhill Team Ski Trophy was won by Kineton, second
Training Centre and third RAOC Northern Ireland.
It is
particularly noteworthy that all three teams had excellent
timings and the results meant the Corps had three teams in the
first twenty for the Army.
It is apparent from the overall success of the Corps skiers
at this Meeting that the aim of the Ski Committee mentioned
earlier is well on the way to success.
Individual and Team Results were: —
W/Private McCamont, of COD Bicester, winner of the WRAC
Novice event
The day of the Regular Army Race, involving the various
team trophies, arrived and all participants with 'skid lids* set off
for the slopes. This race was to be held on the Ml to the
right of the very difficult slope known as ' the White 1 ady'
The weather was overcast and snow was falling, but because of
the severity of the slope, the race was over only five hundred
metres and twenty four gates.
As the participants raced
through the day, the weather grew wanner and the course got
soft. It was soon apparent that the later racers would have to
follow a ' t r o u g h ' through the gates which had been carved
out by the earlier skiers. Towards the end of the racing this
trough was knee deep in places and the course almost un-
s t a b l e , but determination got these skiers through in the end
and some very good results were achieved. It was soon apparent
that the th ree fastest RAOC teams were Training Centre, Logistic
Support Group and Kineton.
Disaster befell many of the
others for one reason or another, but mainly due to the changing
climatic conditions. The fastest RAOC Individual, in a time of
57.34 seconds, was Sergeant Pete Mollison of the Training
Centre, but it is of note that our overall standards were so
improved this year that three RAOC competitors clocked better
