1 [ is not often that the Captain of RAOC Golf feels com-
pelled to put pen to paper but the unique events of the week
of the AGS Spring Meeting held at Sandwich and Deal this
year force me into print.
Major Ron Rush with the Army Golf Match Play Championship
trophy,
TIIK
GOLF
WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP)
Major Ron Rush, our Honorary Secretary, stole the lime-
light at this year's meeting. The accompanying photograph
shows Ron, the first Corps Army Champion, with the Cup he
so deservedly won after playing some excellent golf against
four worthy opponents in the final match play stages.
I had the privilege of watching every shot played over the
last three stages of the Championship. In the second round
Ron was drawn against Lance Corporal Ian Gray also of the
Corps and last years AGA Stroke Play Champion, This draw
ensured a Corps representative into the semi-final,
Lance
Corporal Gray will not mind my saying that his game around
the greens was not up to his usual high standard — which
ultimately led to his defeat.
In the semi-final Ron met WOl Bob Hanna RMP. His
record in the Army Championship since the new format was
introduced is also unique, having reached the semi-final or final
stage every year. However, 1977 was not to be his year, as
Ron played the steadier golf around the greens and thoroughly
deserved his three and two win,
With the weather looking decidedly doubtful, the final
round commenced. It was a good match with never more than
one hole between the two players, and Major George Jones RA
stood on the sixteenth tee one up. Ron holed his putt for the
birdie and the hole, and also won the seventeeth hole to reverse
the lead. A half at the last hole clinched the Championship.
Congratulations Ron, I shall look forward to next year for a
repeat performance-
It was sad that Major Sandy Spencer was not with us
this year to witness and enjoy the celebrations that followed,
especially as coupled with the Championship success we also
produced the Veterans Champion, Lieutenant Colonel Archie
Clark, who surprised himself as. well as all the others with a
magnificent score around Royal St Georges. Congratulations
Archie we hope you will long favour us with your company
at these annual meetings.
The teams for the Ordnance and Egypt Cups competitions
which followed the championship, looked forward to making a
clean sweep for the Corps. Sad to say it was not to be. RAEC
obviously had not celebrated enough the previous night and our
first team was eliminated. The Egypt Cup team won through
to the semi-final but were unable to extract enough holes
from RADC to proceed to the final stage.
This year's meeting will always be remembered as the
year of the " Rush ' ; for the Corps has never before produced
the Army Champion. Let's hope this magnificent achievement
will inspire others to practice and join us at next year's AGS
Spring Meeting.
