Jgetog from Ibroab BAOR Ammunition Inspectorate HEADQUARTERS—HERFORD THIS months happening in Herford was the educational visit by Unit staff to the local brewery. Rumour has it that one of our drivers, Bob Graham, nearly boarded a bus taking a group of Germans home after their visit But for not know- ing where they were going he would probably have gone. It was an afternoon which was enjoyed by all and no doubt a return visit will be planned. Captain Dick Jordan (ATO East) is at present at that stage of his career when courses are the ' done * thing. Between now and the end of the year we should see him for about two weeks; his wife Rosie has all our sympathy—Aaah. If some- one of his stature can be said to ' fleet * then we shall see * fleeting' glimpses of him as he finishes one course and starts another. Meanwhile Captain David Caldwell (ATO West), holds the fort. In the ATs office many a discussion can be heard on maintaining yer environment and yer Trophic Levels; such is the subject material of the Open University course at present being studied by Staff Sergeant Ian McRae and WO I Colin Pearce. Corporal: John Frew became the proud father of a baby girl—Carol Elizabeth. Our congratulations to both him and his wife on the happy addition. Made it at last and a sigh of relief all round! Congratula- tions to Staff Sergeant Ian McRae on selection for promotion to W02, and W02 Roger Crisp to WOl. We say farewell to Private Bob Graham and wish him luck in his new post at 1 Ammunition IDU and welcome his replacement Private Tim Murphy. DETACHMENT—WALSRODE CORPORALS ALEXANDER AND CORR have gone back to UK on posting and an upgrading course respectively and the latter should emerge from the School of Ammunition in a few months time as a Tl waiter. We wish him luck. We welcome Mrs Lucy Le Her to our happy band here at the 'Hotel' She has replaced Mrs Castle who left us a short while ago. ' Rocket Man * Bowen has been seen in the office from time to time during the last range period. He sorta zooms in, grabs his tool box, and zooms out again in his 'Appollo' GS Land Rover. * Basil' WOl Woodward is to be seen pacing up and down his office practising deep breathing and counting to ten; in training for the restart of the inspection cycle 1 Corporal Myring is doing three jobs now the other two Corporals have gone. He seems to be managing very well— judging by the amount of paper he produces. * Q ' Davis and Sergeant ' Cuddly' Clay disappear into the Depot for long periods. We're wondering whether or not it's true that Sergeant Clay is making the ammunition so ' Q ' can meet his issue demands. The Staff of Fawlty Towers took part in a ten kilometre march, organised by the German Ammunition Depot within which we reside. We produced two teams of three. One team consisting of Captain Schofield, WOl Woodward and ' Bob' Herrman our LEC driver, the second team consisted of Sergeant Clay, Corporals Roberts and Myring. Out of eighty teams taking part Sergeant Clay's team were sixth—no mean per- formance! The next event is the twenty kilometre in June, so watch this space!! 15 Composite Ordnance Depot STORES SUB-DEPOT DULMEN THE Depot basks in the golden sunshine and the flag hangs sleepily on a beautiful summer day. Suddenly the peaceful tranquillity is shattered by a sound so terrifying that even the bravest member of the Dulmen soldiery is tempted to flee in panic. A figure emerges from Camp and Repair Group seemingly struggling with a many legged beast that has him by the throat . . . .. It is Major Richard Powell, a bagpipe player from the highlands of Croydon, a man destined to walk the waste lands of Shed 7 alone. Above his head is a message in faded chalk, could it be from a secret admirer? Alas it says only ' Come back Dickie Pratt all is forgiven!' Dulmen might well be a graveyard for aspiring (or should it be perspiring?) musicians, but it is certainly a haven for sportsmen. The Unit Hockey team, specially convened for the Rhine Area six-a-side tournament, progressed to the semi- finals with fine victories over RAF Stations Bruggen and Laar- bruck. In the semi-finals they met a strong Headquarters BAOR side and were unlucky to lose 3-2 on penalty flicks after extra time. This success, however, qualified them for the BAOR six-a-side where they again acquitted themselves well but with two victories and two defeats they did not go in to the final stages. It was a superb effort and they have certainly put Dulmen on the BAOR hockey map—watch out Viersen! Away from the flailing sticks and flying knees to a far more relaxing pastime. Sergeant Bartlett led a crew with, Privates Moore and Hodgkinson (and another member from a large RAOC installation near the Dutch border, whose name escapes me) on Exercise Danish Blue III. This was an RAOC/RAPC Corps Regatta, in eight boats of the Cutlass class, around the Baltic. The event was staged over a five leg course, and with one leg to go there were three RAOC boats in the lead. Luckily the spirit of Nelson prevailed and Sergeant Bartlett's crew romped home with Spinnakers a-bulging and shanties resound- ing. It was a magnificent victory, and they were rewarded with the RAOC (BAOR) Offshore Sailing Cup. Finally to close this month's epistle ws have news of an- other sporting victory with the Unit 4 x 100 metres relay team in the Rheindahlen Garrison Athletic Meeting. Captain Peter Walsh has asked me to say how well he ran and to add that Messrs Hail, Henson and Geale were only there to make up numbers. He adds that his opinion could well be biased, WfF« m-mm The Dulmert light weight Tug-of-War team. Runners up in the Rhine Area Championships and outright winners of the National Truss Championship. VEHICLE SUB-DEPOT MOENCHENGLADBACH WE were honoured to receive a visit from Lieutenant General E. L. Chopra, DOS India. After lunch in Windberg Station Officers Mess, Lieutenant General Chopra spent two hours on an inspection of the technical function of the Unit. Lieutenant Colonel D. L Gooley our late Commanding Officer had a rousing send-off on the 9th May as the photo- graph shows. We wish him and Mrs Gooley well. |
