ORDNANCE
BRANCH
WE have been somewhat subdued ihis month, but nevertheless,
had our moments. Major Stuart Rowsell has been on l e a v e -
By Order! and Captain John Cottington has been batting in all
directions during his absence. His bowling has been pretty good
as well, having recently taken four wickets in his opening over
against 15 Field Workshop; fat chance of getting his car serviced
on the quiet! and whilst we are on the subject of Captain ' C,'
belated congratulations to wife Evelyn and said Captain on
arrival of daughter Emily, and humble apologies from this quill
wielder for failing to record that historic event in T H E GAZETTE
Peerage Peerage List
WOl Gordon Halton went a-fishing and mislaid his car
keys. After the rest of us had spent twenty minutes in knee-
high grass and pouring rain searching for them, they were found
safe, warm and dry in his tackle box. He came very close to
studying the fish in their natural habitat!
Staff Sergeant Ches Hartley turned up, during a recent
shower, in his army issue raincoat, and violently denied he got
it from Marty Feldman, who did a flash programme in it!
Congratulations to Private * KC * Smith on his promotion
lo Lance Corporal. Lance Corporal Paddy Keating is now
doing football, badminton and anything else to stay ahead.
Congratulations must go to Paddy for his selection and ap-
pearance twice in our Corps football side, still they lost?
Sergeant Graham Orszewski has been promptly re-christened
4
Orinoko,' which is easier to remember, and Staff Sergeant
James Gleeson, came in and said, " You can't catch me this
month, I havent done anything!". So have to report, Jim
hasn't done anything this month—again!
Pride of place however, must go to Sergeant Alan (Dan
Archer) Mellitt who has with great expense and foresight,
purchased a metal detector. He had secretly written to a hair
restoring firm a week or two previously, so he thought perhaps
they'd told him he didn't have enough iron in his blood. But
no, he has been seen lurking in odd spots with his hoover-like
machine, making some very strange sounds indeed—the machine
that is I So far he has discovered a box of drawing pins on our
Chief Clerk's desk.
Staff Sergeant Ken Hartley is in India at the moment;
when someone mentioned Mecca before he went, Ken said he
didn't dance' We hope the walk does him good. W 2 Joe
Fletcher is in mourning following Everton's robbery.
Our Branch is off to Bavaria in early June to Adventure
Training, a full report and pictures to follow, however, some
are rather dubious at the thought of ITV or BBC on either
end of a rope up a mountain, with ITV in possession of a
sharp knife!
Sadly we have to report our DDOS has to go into hospital
for an operation.
Our good wishes for a full and speedy
recovery go with him.
Late News Flash—Sergeant Mellitt has had a win on the
Pools—£7.20. He put a X for no publicity: must have been
mistaken for a signature.

SIR,—Knowing how you like the Division
to present the correct image, I organised
a prize essay competition for the GAZETTE
Notes (I thought your wife could present
the prizes). Sad to say, Sir, that the only
prize awarded was six extras for the
following masterpiece, which I am sure
you Will agree is nowhere as good as the
notes

With t h e a r r i v a l of t h e w a r m e r
weather, THE GAZETTE Notes from Headquarters RAOC 1
Division are mostly sporting. Apart from being beasted into
action on twice-weekly (weakly!?) runs by the Adjutant.
Captain Collis, we also have various personnel disappearing on
different sporting activities. For instance, Sergeant Paul Swain-
son leapt off down to Rheindahlen to umpire an internationally
organised
Hockey and
Competition
France, Germany
Holland), (teams from United Kingdom,
WOl Brill, took away a prize at the Headquarters 1
Division and Signal Regiment Golf Tournament in Bremen
recently. This was the b Flag Competition"; we are not sure
whether he had to see how many flags he could steal without
being noticed or whether it entailed getting that little white
ball to balance on the top of all the flags.
Sergeant Len Wrightson, meanwhile, is winding up his
bowling arm in preparation for the Royal Signals BAOR ten-
pin bowling championships. There is, however, no truth what-
soever in the rumour that he is transferring to the Royal Signals
just to bowl!
From the military skills point of view, Sergeant Dave
Coombs, Corporal Clive Craister, and Lance Corporal John
Griffiths have been selected to shoot in the 1 Division Head-
quarters and Signal Regiment Shooting Competition. Sergeant
Coombs on SMG, and Corporal Craister and Lance Corporal
Griffiths doing their bit on the LMG pairs. A report on how
they get on will no doubt appear in next month's notes. Seasoned
readers will be pleased to know that Lance Corporal Ian Grimes
is still sick!
With Private Alan Ritchie still getting his knees brown in
BATUS, the never ending piles of filing are being sorted by
Privates Dave Dewar and Alan Saxby. Q Henty has suggested
that they be bound and shackled to the desks, but the modifica-
tion has been turned down by MOD.

FIELD PARK
WE are now well into the exercise season and have just returned
from a two week work out just north of the Harz Mountains.
The weather was very kind which is always a bonus, however
the lack of foliage on the trees did stretch our imagination when
it came to concealment. A long weekend in a village location
gave us a good opportunity to practice the local language and
promote Anglo-German relations, it certainly made a change
from talking to the trees! Apart from being attacked by some
rather misguided volunteers from Brigade Headquarters of
whom three were captured, activity was fairly quiet until the
second week when we provided our own volunteers as enemy
and simulated casualties. Everything went well except for
Private Brechin who became the poverbial ' walking wounded'
when on being separated from his enemy party he ended up
walking some forty kilometres back to the Unit! The Bath Unit
was much in demand at the weekend and Messrs Frost, Buckley
and Perry provided an excellent service. The only other event
of note was Corporal Walkers' exploration of a rather steep
verge with his * Tenny ' which was quickly recovered by Sergeant
Hobday RE ME who, after careful examination drove it out and
still swears to this day that that was the first time he'd sat in
the cab of such a vehicle! We also had time to practice our map
reading skills on a patrol basis—not that easy in heavily
wooded country without a compass! and the OC Major Smith
was able to slip away to play in a representative football match
as part of the Twentieth Anniversary Celebrations of 34 Panzer
Battalion our * Freundschaft * neighbours here at Scheuen.
On the sporting scene first place must go to the Basketball
team (photograph enclosed), who with the help of Major Wes
Thomas from Corps Troops East won the 1 Division Minor
Units Championship and as reported last month were runners
up to 1 Combat Supplies Battalion in the RAOC BAOR Cham-
pionship. A fine effort considering we have not got a court of
our own!
Congratulations are also in order for Corporal Armstrong
winner of the 1 Division Mens* Singles Tennis Championship
and runner up in the Doubles, also to Captain Paddy O'Connell
who led the RAOC team at the recent Army Parachute Cham-
pionships in the UK. The team won the Team Speed Com-
petition and came fifth overall.
For the next few weeks we shall be turning our attention
to Athletics, Volleyball and Tug-of-War, the latter activity
being strenuously coached by Corporal Clack.
We welcome Privates Vosper and Witheridge from the
Depot and say farewell to Private Shipley.
We end on a sad note and must record the death of Herr
Cremers who had worked for the RAOC here at Scheuen for
the past twenty six yean. Many past members of Provision
Control and Accounts will remember him as the Central Records
Clerk.
