THE Christodoula's March is an annual sponsored walk from
Limassol to Kolossi Castle to raise funds for a Cyprus Anti-
Cancer Society's Home, The 1976 March was undertaken by
Cypriot walkers only and £8,000 was collected. In order to
boost funds this year, Headquarters Land Forces Cyprus was
approached by the organisers and servicemen and their families
were encouraged to participate not only to benefit the Anti-
Cancer Society but to cement the good relations which exist
between the Services and the Cypriot population.
On hearing of the March Major John Rose, our weekend
r-mbler, set about persuading members of the RAOC to give
i-'^ir support. He did this by a number of questionable methods
and in no time at all there were thirty volunteers for the ten
mile walk encompassing a wide range of ages from * old and
bold * to two five year olds!

*
The weather on the day was perfect, with sun and a coot
breeze. There were about two thousand local participants, most
of whom were young people. There were also a large number
of individuals and groups of servicemen. The route took them
along Limassol seafront through orange groves and vineyards
and ended at the castle of King Richard and the Knights of St
John where refreshments were available for those who needed
them. The whole Ordnance contingent finished the course with
only an occasional blister for their trouble.
Of particular note were the performances of our youngsters
namely Ian and Allison Brown, Edward and Rebecca Tregarthen,
Anthony and Derek Collins, Jill and Helen Lawrence and Richard
Mathams. Our champion individual collector was Mr Bashir
Shahabdin who raised £32.70 and the most successful family
was that of CRAOC Lieutenant Colonel Mike Mathams, who
collected £83.70.
That's leadership for you! The Corps
eventually made £410.00, and it is understood that a grand
total of £37,350 has been raised throughout Cyprus.
Our
contribution may have been small in comparison with the
total achieved but we gained great satisfaction from our efforts
as well as the knowledge that we were contributing to a truly
worthy cause.
