THE BAOR CORPS WEEKEND (Photographs by the Planning and Work Study Unit BAOR) RAOC in BAOR held their Corps Weekend on 25th and 26th June. It followed the pattern which has now become traditional in BAOR, an Athletics Meeting, a Ball and St Barbara's Day Church Service. THE ATHLETICS when he was presented with the ' Shipton Trophy' for the discus event. (The presentation of the trophy by Staff Sergeant Shipton was reported in the July GAZETTE). MEETING AS in previous years the Athletics Meeting was held in the Stadium at the Vehicle Sub-Depot Moenchengladbach. The big difference this year was that the meeting was shortened to a one day event taking place on the Saturday only, the number of field events being reduced by dropping specialist events such as the hammer. The new programme worked out well, and a good days athletics was enjoyed by the com- petitors and a gratifying number of spectators. The only murmuring of discontent came from the officials who had an unusually early Saturday morning start. The weather threatened in the morning but the rain held off apart from a short sharp thunderstorm during the elimina- tion pulls for the tug-of-war. After this it cleared and the conditions during the afternoon events were excellent. The number of teams entering was reduced as both Wulfen and Dulmen were involved in the BAOR Athletics Meeting which,. unfortunately, was being held on the same day. In spite of this eight teams entered, including Headquarters BAOR/ NORTHAG who made a welcome return to the meeting. The standard was generally high and certainly com- petitive. Deserving particular comment was the running of Lance Corporal Eaton of Headquarters BAOR in the 1,500 metres and 5,000 metres, where he outpaced the opposition, and the 4 x 200 metre relay team from 15 Composite Ordnance Depot who beat the old record by two seconds when finishing in one minute thirty six seconds. Sergeant Jones of the Corps Troops Team, came close in the 400 metres, his time of 52.5 being .2 of a second outside the existing record, In the tug-of-war a well drilled team from 7 and 11 OFPs clinched the light weight event, and 3 BAPD took the heavy weight. At the end of the day 3 BAPD had won the Team Track Cup, and 15 Composite Ordnance Depot (SSD Viersen and VSD Moenchengladbach) won the Team Field Cup and the overall winners trophy, the Challenge Cup. A new trophy was won by Private Stringer of 3 BAPD Corporal Lane receiving from Lance Corporal Catchpoie of the 15 Composite Ordnance Depot Relay Team* Mrs Crawley accepting a bouquet from Miss Boulton after the prize-giving. At the end of the meeting Brigadier F. P. Crawley, Director of Ordnance Services BAOR, presented a Tankard to Major Geoff Odhams (Retd) in recognition of his services to RAOC (BAOR) Athletics. Geoff Odhams has been the Starter for our Athletics Meetings certainly since 1965 and probably even longer, and we hope will be 'starting* for us for many years to come* The prizes were presented by Mrs Crawley and a bouquet was charmingly presented to her by Miss Theresa Boulton, daughter of Corporal Boulton, who stole the show with her parting curtsy.
