THE
WALK
RHINE
AREA
THE sponsored walk was organised by the Mission Committee
of Christ Church. Dusseldorf, The aim to raise funds for the
South American Missionary Society medical station at Mak-
thlaiwaya, Paraguay.
Two members of the Corps organised the walk; they were
Captain Brian Page of Barrack Services, Dusseldorf and
Sergeant Bill Barlow of Headquarters Rhine Area.
Eighty children, mostly from the Scout, Cub, Guide and
Brownie packs of Dusseldorf and Hubbelrath, and a number of
adults, took part. There were two 'courses,' a full distance of
seventeen kilometres and a shorter walk of eleven kilometres
following the course of the river Rhine, intended for the
infants and the elderly.
095 BAOR, Brigadier F, R, Crawley presents a tankard to
M?jor Geoff Odhams (Retd) who has started track events at
the athletics meetings for the past twelve years.
THE OFFICERS BALL
THIS YEAR, the Annual Ball could not be held in the Rhein-
dahlen Rooms (the old International Officers Club). Much
of the accommodation there has been taken over by NAAFI as
car showrooms. After a reconnaissance of a number of alternative
premises, it was decided that it would take place at the Officers
Mess of 3 BAPD.
The organisation was undertaken by
Colonel Musson and the Officers of 3 BAPD and the vast
majority of the two hundred and more who attended pro-
nounced the Ball a roaring success,
The Mess was extended to three times its usual capacity by
using canvas coverings and a portable dance floor was in-
stalled to cover the parking area in front of the Mess. Those
present who were familiar with the 3 BAPD Mess were
astounded at the transformation made. The floral decorations
by the ladies of 3 BAPD were
beautifully arranged. Dancing

THE ST. BARBARA'S
DAY SERVICE
ST BARBARA'S DAY was celebrated, as has been usual, at a
Church Service in the Vehicle Sub-Depot at Moenchenglad-
bach.
A tank storage shed, impeccably decorated, was converted
into a church for the occasion. So well converted in fact that
it became popularly known as Ayrshire Abbey, a soubriquet
which was accentuated by the row of Abbot 'A' vehicles
v.bich formed an impressive display outside the church.
A congregation of over six hundred enjoyed a service con-
ducted by the Chaplain of Moenchengladbach station, the Rev
B. J. Bennett, assisted by Father T. Kelly from Krefeld, who
preached the sermon.
Brigadier F. P. Crawley, read the
lesson.
Claire
( I I ) , Cheryl Page (6) and Deborah
Barlow (7)
completed the full 17 kilometre course
All the children except two, completed the longer distance
of seventeen kilometres.
Cheryl Page aged six years and
Deborah Barlow aged seven years, walking
with their parents,
l
completed the full seventeen kilometre course,' as did Claire
Barlow aged eleven years.
The walk resulted in pledges of DM 3920 (almost £1,000).
This, together with DM 1215 raised from a Flea Market held in
May, will be used to purchase urgently needed medical equip-
ment at Makthlaiwaya. A new clinic has recently been opened
at the medical station and there is an urgent need to combat
disease. Thirty five per cent of all Paraguayan Chaco children
die before reaching the age of five years.
THE RAOC MEDAL COLLECTION
ANY visitor to the RAOC Museum must he impressed
by the collection of medals that adorns the whole of one
wall of the complex. Some of these medals have been
loaned to the Museum; some have been given or have
been bequeathed, and others have been purchased on
the open market. Whilst funds continue to be avail-
able, further purchases will be made.
Every effort is being made to improve the col-
lection ; medals awarded to members of the Corps
before the Second World War will be more than wel-
come, and medals for gallantry in any period will be
especially received.
The Curator of the Museum may be contacted by
'phone on Brookwood 4511 Extension 650.
