On the sporting front the tennis players art limbering up
I , the Base Organisation tournament and have played several
names with local teams. Our cricketers have won through to
[he semi-finals of the EDIST Cricket Competition, but we do
not know yet who our opponents are to be.
Central Ordnance Depot Donnington
1 AST MONTH we promised further information on a thirty
year old pledge and some information on what not to do as a
n'liy driver in the Army,
The latter has proved successful
^ nigh to be relegated to a separate article; the former has
p.Lwed more difficult to deal with and we include a progress
report later in this letter.
Meanwhile, the Jubilee has come and gone, notable in
Donnington more for watching than creating spectacles. In this
Jubilee year however we are carrying out, with a lot of help
from its friends, a complete refurbishing of the Little Theatre.
For those who have not served in Donnington the Little Theatre
is the spiritual if not proprietorial home of the Donnington
Garrison Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society which fills
such a large portion of the cultural activity of the Depot. As
- . « result of an agreement reached with Telford Development
Corporation and the Local Authority it has been possible to
extend the life of the theatre and make possible and worth-
while a complete face-lift. We hope to include a full article
next month on this but preparations are going ahead for a
grand re-opening on Tuesday 28th June at which the presenta-
tion will be "A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the
Forum." to be produced by Colonel Ray Thornton.
The photograph is not a new form of torture devised for
the Fit to Fight programme by our Commandant nor the pro-
duct of the mental ravings of the Chief Planning Officer. It
VHOWS a part of the new look in storage in COD Donnington.
Rapidly nearing completion is the new high rise, narrow aisle
on nine levels and provide eighty picking faces served by twelve
fork-lift turret trucks.
The aisles will extend the full 192
metres length of the storehouse and be capable of handling
a peak load LOGO standard pallets a day. Coincidentally the
contract was won by Link 51, a storage group which has
relatively recently established a new factory in Telford New
Town,
It is traditional that the Travcrs Clarke results will be
published separately but we wish in our own notes to con-
gratulate Private Stephen Wagstaff who. to the amazement of
all including himself, won the pole vault and Corporal Phil
Eila who, despite a broken jaw, only narrowly failed to retain
the long jump cup that he won last year. We would also
wish to congratulate Corporal Clarke in the hammer and WOl
Macponald who won us points, and to all others who gained
selection for the team. We felt that the revised format of the
Meeting, designed to give us an equal chance with the major
units, was not an unqualified success since it restricted the num-
ber of people who could take part and denied WagstafT, for
example, the chance of adding to our points tally. On balance
we preferred the layout of last year,
The CAO has become very history conscious over the past
six months and perhaps one day all will be revealed. The
pledge referred to at the beginning of this letter concerns an
extract discovered in the History of the Shropshire Yeomanry
which suggested that the altar furniture in the Garrison Church
was given by the Yeomanry..having been made by them and
their attached REME Workshops in Italy at the end of the war.
The History suggested that an undertaking had been given that
a suitable plaque would be erected in the church in due course.
This has so far not been done but further investigations suggest
that there are rival claimants to the manufacture of the altar and
the altar rails, the lectern and the pulpit. Perhaps anyone read-
ing these notes who has knowledge of where these items came
from to the Donnington Church would be good enough to
write to the CAO at Donnington so that the mystery can be
cleared up.
Among the minor notes this month we must congratulate
apidly nearing completion is the new high rise, narrow aisle,
pallet racking installation at Donnington.

part of the rationalization and modernization programme
^ J extends the existing system to consolidate the storage
i acuities of two of our largest buildings under one roof. When
complete it will cover a total area of 35,000 square metres.
Over nine metres high, it will provide 73,000 pallet locations
