SUB-DEPOT
MOENCHENGLADBACH
HIGHLIGHTING this month's news was the presentation of
Jubilee medals by the DOS (BAOR) to the Commanding Officer,
Lieutenant Colonel Young. RSM Joll. Sergeant Mullen REME,
Sergeant Gardner RAPC, and Corporal Batty.
Our hearty
congratulations go to all the recipients.
Once again, the VSD were hosts at the annual 15 Com-
posite Ordnance Depot Sports. Splendidly organised by Major
Peter Gibson, the sun shone and we were privileged to have the
presence of the Corps Band who played 1 the tug-of-war finals
on to the tune of ' Match of the Day. Fierce but friendly

On the 8th June the Commanding Officer presented WOl

Menzies, WOl Ken Pratt, Corporals Ron Ahlfeld and Pete
Bradshaw on their promotion. We say farewell to WOl Dave
Cornelius, Sergeant Neil Marsh and Corporal Dave Rudge.
We welcome Staff Sergeant Jim Hall REME, Corporals Dave
Heinaru and Clarke and Private Parker-Bancroft. Private Jackie
Murphy WRAC, so long the Girl-Friday of RSM Bill Black
has at long last gone off to her well earned driving course and,
hopefully, a break from 'Coffee Jackie, Chop Chop!'

Stop Press, The Corps weekend was a success for the
Unit in various ways. We combined with VSD Moenchen-
gladbach to represent 15 COD in the RAOC BAOR Athletics
Meeting and had a field day. In the track events we won
the 4 x 100 metres relay, 4 x 200 metres relay, which we might
add broke the RAOC BAOR record by two seconds. Corporal
Mitchell finished second in the 1500 metres and the medley
relay team finished third. In the field events RSM Black won
the shot and Sergeant Mar-Gerrison finished third in the long
jump. Although being pipped by 3 BAPD in the Track Events
Cup, we did win the Field Event Trophy and the Overall Win-
ners Championship. The weather held up for the meeting and
the athletes and spectators alike had a thoroughly enjoyable
day. The Junior Ranks had a barbeque to celebrate the Corps
Weekend and a massive turnout were royally entertained by
Corporal Les Pearce and his Committee.
competition ensued throughout the afternoon with the main
tussle being between SSD Dulmen and SSD Viersen, both Units
of which we recommend be subject to an 1 of E Inspection!! The
VSD won the heavyweight
division of the tug-of-war, ably

coached by SSM 'Nick Neal, they beat SSD Dulmen in two
straight pulls in an entertaining final,
A seven-a-side football tournament is planned for July
and the officers will be fielding a team. Rumour has it that the
CO will be making his debut in goal, and Staff Sergeant Jock
Wilson has assured the OIC Football team that he will not cut
up the turf or demolish the goal pasts for souvenirs, if the
Liaison Section win.
SSM Paul Barlow, Liverpool supporter extraordinary,
returned from both Wembley (in miserere) and Rome (in
delirium). He refuses to discuss the costs of his sporting jaunts
but quips that it pays to stay single and follow the * Pool'
The cricket team got off to a rather shaky start to the
season but now appear to be settling down. The 'friendly'
between the Officers and Sergeants saw Sergeant Davidson with
a broken nose and in net practice, Major Dai Jones had some
teeth dislodged—a dangerous game this—and not at all cricket! I
Early morning risers will have seen the Unit swimmers
under Captain Sider on their way to the Blue Pool in Rhein-
dahlen where they are training for the forthcoming Rhine Area
Championships. They hope to give a good account of them-
selves.
Corporal Appleby, Mrs Ingrid Gore (wife of W02 Gore)
and several Cub Scouts spent a pleasant but rather damp week-
end camping in South Park.
Highlights of the weekend's
activities were a grand camp fire and sing song.
There has been a resurgence of interest in golf this year
and although we were well beaten in our first match against
Dusseldorf Station, we have since drawn with 3 BAPD. W02
Thomas managed to get in ' amongst the silver* at the last 15
COD meeting without getting his handicap reviewed.
The OIC Depot Admin, Major Dai Phipps, is an expert on
ornithology and can rarely be seen without his binoculars.
Asked by the CO at a recent conference what was accom-
modated in a particular building he replied " Not quite sure
Sir—but two blackbirds and one pair of swifts are nesting in
there!"
Congratulations to Corporal and Mrs Mardi on the birth
of a son, Jason Karl.
