Headquarters Director General of Ordnance Services
THE latest innovation to the Head-
quarters, the DGOS Secretariat, was
originally formed on 18th October
1976 but did not become fully effec-
tive until April 1977 when the full
complement of: Staff were finally in
post. The Secretariat, which is in
two Sections, is headed by an AA
und QMG, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Paviour.
Section 1
K responsible for the co-ordination of all matters involving
-rtore than one of the Headquarters branches or subordinate
Directorates; briefing DGOS, and co-ordination of the Head-
quarters General Administration. Section 2 deals with MS
and A points affecting RAOC, and general Corps matters. The
Secretariat personalities are Major Mike Willis and Captain
Tony Wilson-Ing in Section 1 with Lieutenant Colonel Peter
Lawrence and Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hawley (Retd) in
Section 2. Clerical support is provided by Staff Sergeant Danny
Day, Sergeants Brian Berry and Malcolm Banks, our CA, all
of whom work under the watchful eye of our Staff Assistant/
Superintending Clerk SSM Ken Thorn.
On 30th June we held an enjoyable, and informal, party in
First Avenue to say thank you and farewell to all the Civilian
Staff who will not be moving with us to Andover and who, in
consequence, will be phasing out progressively over the next
few weeks. Whilst feeling sad at the loss of our old retainers
we have welcomed a very strong contingent of Andover based
officials, both military and civilian, who are now making the
daily pilgrimage to London.
Anyone who has served in London will appreciate the
difficulties involved in getting together a reasonable * Unit'
cricket team, but notwithstanding Captain Brian Boucher has
been successful in getting an RAOC London eleven into action
twice over the past few days. The opening match of the
season resulted in a defeat by Kineton in the RAOC inter unit
knock out competition and, so I am told, the least said about
the score the better! However, never daunted, they came back
for the second time to enjoy an exciting afternoon's cricket
versus a COSLOG XI at Deepcut and on this occasion were
more successful. COSLOG batted first and were dismissed for
one hundred and forty six, our most successful bowler being
Major Kevin Goad who took four wickets for thirteen runs.
In reply thanks mainly to Major John Cook (fifty one), Briga-
dier Stuart Ryder (thirty four) and Skipper Colonel John
Skinner (thirty six), the one hundred and forty seven runs
required for victory were obtained with five wickets still stand-
ing but only one ball of the allotted thirty overs remaining!
Lieutenant Colonels Arthur Walker (Her Majestys Tower)
and Arthur Price (Ordnance 2) have left us on retirement and
we wish them well in whatever they choose to do in the future.
Major Granville Holt (Section 2) has also left behind the hustle
and bustle of life in High Holborn on moving to Headquarters
South East District Aldershot—the lunchtime walkabouts will
never be the same again! In replacement we welcome Lieuten-
ant Colonel Peter Lawrence \ (Section 2), Lieutenant Colonel
Jack Feathers (Her Majestys Tower) and Major Reg Williams
(Ordnance 2).

S MAN 1
SIGNS of our impending move have materialised in the shape
of Mr Geoff Lampilt and Mrs Constance McCorrnack the
first of the Andover advance party to whom we extend a warm
welcome.
Major Mike Rose represented us in the RAOC Lawn
Tennis Association tournament and was joined by W02 Ralph
McKee in the DGOS cricket team selected to meet CAD Ktne-
ton. We understand that Major Rose's chances in the tennis
tournament were somewhat handicapped by a handicap, a con-
fusing state of affairs but that was the excuse he gave us for
being stopped in the semi-finals.
Our congratulations go this month to a military and a
civilian member of our branch; to Major John Eddison who
has been selected for promotion and to Mr Ernie Vidgen
who received from the DGOS a certificate of appreciation for
loyal service in the Directorate.
5 MAN 2
Episode six. Prelude to a silly season. It is hoped that other
than S Man 2ers will appreciate the title of this month's episode,
it is often amazing what (damage) the enthusiastic amateur can
do whilst the experts are on leave! Take our Bicester brethren
for example—two of them, Francis Edmonds-Jones and Steve
Tooke have managed to escape, both to Control Division (on
reflection ' escape' might not be the right word). We wish them
all the best in their new jobs. At the same time we welcome
from Technical Records, Les Humphries.
Major Keith Mullins having just spent a week at Read-
ing University doing an Open University Course, has managed
to get himself a week's trip to BAOR and will no doubt be
putting down the usual crop of insurrections popular at this
time of the year in that place.
Our leader, Colonel John Skinner, (full description given
in last month's issue) and Major Pat Wall were members of a
victorious DGOS cricket team who beat COSLOG by five
wickets. Note of this should be taken by the BAOR RAOC
team, with the September tour in mind!
Our final piece of news concerns our answer to Chris
Bonnington—Captain Tim King.'* Fresh from a supporting role
in the book * Soldiers on Everest * (available from HMSO Book-
shops), he is currently starring as * Mr * in the ' Mr and Mrs
King Show/ On 23rd July Tim married Miss Madeline Bland
and we wish them all the best for the future.

DONNINGTON
THIS time of the year is always regarded as the silly season
but it has never been more so than currently with our attendance
on courses. Major Mike Roberts and Major Douglas Stobie
are at Shrivenham. They were disturbed to find that what they
thought would be a quiet snug little three weeks sabbatical is in
fact the procurement portion of the Staff College Syllabus.
Captain Brian Nimick seems to have taken up permanent
residence at Warminster but we might get him back in time
for the rugby season. Captain Martin Smart has deployed to
Blackdown to refurbish his promotion exam prospectus. Major
Tom Moffatt is at Bagshot on a Christian Leadership Course.
Sergeant Tom Emmott has been sent on a provision course
just as he began to believe that the computer did it all. Even
Lieutenant Colonel John Gentle was returned to Shrivenham
after twenty years for a five day computer course. It didn't
do him any good. He still does not know his ALGOL from
his COBOL.
As always, sport looms large but not as large as the
GKN Sankey opposition in the local tug-of-war contest. Staff
Sergeant Mel Hamilton, Sergeant Steve Swales, Corporal Mike
Stewart and Lance Corporal Robin Walters, our contribution
to the military team, were appalled to see these local giants
with horseshoes nailed to their boots. Having no time to check
the rules we were beaten in the finals.
Staff Quartermaster Sergeant Dennis Roud is now safely
back with us from hospital and looking fit. He was presented
with his Long Service and Good Conduct medal by Brigadier
Mike Short, our Garrison Commander, at a recent convivial
ceremony.
Private Robin Walters completed the Offa's Dyke march of
one hundred and seventy miles—an adventurous training exercise
organised by the COD. On his return he found a Lance
Corporals stripe in amongst the backlog of work in his tray.
Staff Sergeant Les Dalton has competed in both the Inter-
national Welsh and Scottish car rallies. The 1800 went well in
