INDEX
TO
READERS will be pleased to know that Corporal A. O'Connor
of Vehicle Depot Cyprus, succeeded in being selected to crew
Adventure on one of the legs of the Whitbread Round the
World Race which started from Portsmouth on the 30th
August. The race is made up of four legs over 27,000 miles
of ocean and is expected to finish at Portsmouth sometime next
April In yachts costing anything up to £300,000, some not so
fortunate crew members are paying £4,000 each for the privilege
of taking part in the gruelling race—winds in the rough southern
oceans rarely drop below fifty miles per hour* His article on
the trials and tribulations of selection for a crew place in the
Ministry of Defence entry appeared in the September issue and
we hope to report further as news of his experiences comes in,
There is something of a nautical flavour about this months
GAZETTE too—based mainly on the Royal Review of the Fleet
which took place at Spithead. Although some time after the
event, this is the first available issue since the receipt of copy
and we thought the Corps participation well worth recording.
Interesting too is that this is the first time that we have used a
colour print on the cover, translated to black and white without
too much loss of quality. This was achieved by the use of
filters during the re-photographing.
Finding a good cover
picture is always a problem and being able to use a colour
print, enlarged to this size, is a considerable help. So many
photographs are in colour these days, a process which at the
present time we are not, alas, able to afford,
For the same reason the size of T H E GAZETTE > although
at forty pages much larger than most, cannot be expanded.
While response from unit correspondents is, I am glad to
say, excellent, without editing the whole GAZETTE would, at
times, be taken up by newsletters. Some pruning of the longer
submissions is therefore, occasionally necessary in order to
produce a balanced journal and to make room for news, sport
and those articles which become dated if held over for too long.
Every effort is made to keep the newsletters as they were
written and they always take a- general priority over other
copy, however, when some editing down is necessary I trust
that readers will bear with me.
