LIEUTENANT COLONEL R. J. PURNELL
LIEUTENANT COLONEL R. M CARRUTHERS writes: —
iV
Reg Purnell joined the RASC as a boy soldier in 1928,
retired as a Lieutenant Colonel of the RAOC in 196S and worked
as a Retired Officer in Ordnance Branch at South West District
until the 30th of July 1977 when he died, after a short illness,
just a few days short of his sixty fourth birthday.*'
Those few lines summarize nearly fifty years of service to
the Queen, but what they cannot do is tell of the quality of
that service or of the dedication with which, it was performed.
All who knew Reg will testify to his immense personal
knowledge of his job; to the dogged determination with which
he tackled any and every task given to him; to the painstaking
detail and one hundred per cent accuracy that characterised his
work. But mostly they will remember him for his kindliness,
his good humour and his humility. There are few people about
whom one can say " He had no enemies" but Reg was one.
From the highest to the lowliest, all who came in contact with
him were aware of his sincerity, his friendliness and his simple
desire to be of help to them, and it is this combination of
personal qualities that made him so liked and respected.
We in Headquarters South West District consider ourselves
privileged to have known him and worked along side him, and
those of us who have had anything to do with Barracks Services
over the past few years have good cause to appreciate his
encyclopaedic knowledge of the subject.
After being com-
missioned in 1943 almost his entire service was spent in the
Barracks Organization and when he changed his cap badge to
that of RAOC in 1965 he continued in that field up to and
beyond his retirement.
Shortly after his death [ overheard a member of his staff
saying, " I suppose we will manage without him, but it wont
really be the same, will it?" It was said with real affection
and typified the loss which we all felt at his passing.
To his wife Hazel, his daughter Sandra and her husband
and Reg's beloved grand-children we offer our deepest sympathy
with the hope that time will lessen the grief.
