THE DINGHY
REGATTA
I'HE RAOC Dinghy Regatia took place at Netley and although
the number of entries was fewer than last year, competition
throughout the fleet was keen. The Corps Sailing Association
urgently needs to attract both young officers and soldiers to
dinghy racing. There is no better place to start than at the
Annual Dinghy Regatta: so to all those who have up to now
dithered on the foreshore, make sure you make a start next
year! Our Admiral, Major General Minogue, is especially
keen that the long-established members should actively en-
tourage young helmsmen to enter, there was only one young
officer and two young soldiers racing this year. As a word of
encouragement to the younger members the atmosphere both on
and off the water is always very friendly and informal.
At the other end of the scale it is most encouraging to see
our retired ' crack' sailors (Dusty Miller and Bob Marshall)
competing where they were amongst the winners—as always.
No racing would have been possible without the hard work
of the Regatta Race Committee, Major Jim Ashcroft's team
included Major James Michelli (Retd) and Major Harry Potts
(Retd) on the Committee boat and Lance Corporal Tony Long
on the foreshore and we were all most grateful for their interest
and help. Major Jim Ashcroft's energy and enthusiasm was
unlimited and our thanks are extended to him—it's his turn to
race again next year!
There were a total of nine races and all except the last
race were sailed in light airs. A worthwhile lesson was taught
to those who did not appreciate the value of a lightweight crew
in light airs. The administrative support was first class and
helped to make for a happy family occasion. RQMS Brownrigg
and his helpers set and achieved a very high standard. Until
next year, good sailing. The results of the individual and team
events are as follows: —

ATHLETICS
WULFEN
TEAM
SUCCESS
THE Wulfen Station Athletics team has had a very successful
year having won the Rhine Area Minor Units Championship,
finishing third in the BAOR Minor Units Championship and
finally finishing third in the UK Minor Units Championship
where they were beaten by only four points.
The team, consisting of eight RAOC soldiers and three
REME, consistently improved their performance throughout the
three championships.
The 4 x 100 metre runners, Private
Dawber, Corporal Leech* Lance Corporal Harrow and Private
Ramsey doing 44.5 seconds in the UK Championships. This,
we understand, beats the current Corps Record.
Special note should be made of the efforts of Corporal
Leech in winning both the BAOR and UK Minor Units long
jump and Sergeant Towers-Clarke who, at the age of thirty
two, did his fastest ever 1500 metre time of four minutes fifteen
seconds, finishing second in UK,
However, the success of the team was really based on the
fact that they were a team. It was a real team effort with
everyone helping and encouraging each other all the way.
The team consisted of: Sergeant Noddy Nagle, RAOC,
Discus; Sergeant Tony Hammond, REME, High Jump; Sergeant
Dave Towers-Clarke, RAOC, 1500 metres; Corporal Denny
Labdon, REME, Javelin; Corporal Tony Leech, RAOC, Long
Jump and Relay; Corporal Dave Cotterill, RAOC, 800 metres;
Corporal Keith Tomlinson, RAOC, 400 metres; Lance Corporal
Mick Harrow, REME, Relay; Private Lee Ramsey, RAOC,
200 metres and Relay; Private Phil Dawber, RAOC, Relay;
Private John Mazzon, RAOC, Shot.
