GAZF/TH-
Postings out this month are: Major Guy, Staff Sergeant
I von REME and Corporal Harlree who leaves for civvy street.
Congratulations to Lance Corporal Harrow on promotion to
Corporal, Privates Millar and Hill to Lance Corporal and
Sergeant Mclloncy to Staff Sergeant.
154 FORWARD AMMUNITION DEPOT
THIS is never the best month to write GAZETTE- notes be-
cause all the people you rely on for information have gone on
leave. Judging by the weather in Europe this summer and
particularly for the last fortnight those not taking leave in
France. Austria, Italy, Bavaria and Switzerland, have saved a
bomb—and had some peace and quiet!
The Station cricket match mentioned above was cribbed
from the DOS (BAOR) v DDOS 1 (BR) Corps match held at
Wulfen earlier this month. They managed to find a fine day
and the details of this contest have I am sure been repeated
elsewhere in this issue.
We congratulate Lance Corporal John Sim on the birth
of his son Robert John. We welcome Sergeant Bob Berry
<REME). Corporal Glen Stott and Private John Campbell and say
farewell to WOl Terry Savage, Staff Sergeant Alan Anfield,
Sergeant Pete Holmes and Corporal Dave Cotterill.
Congratulations to Lance Corporal Dawber and Walls on
Eheir promotion.

ORDNANCE BRANCH
WE say farewell to Major John Hammond and his
wife Liz this month, and wish them well in the
future. They will not be too far away, so we

time, if
only to borrow a cup of sugar!
We welcome Major John Regan and his wife
Carol to the Branch, and hope that their stay
will be a happy one: as a new arrival he gets off
lightly this month*
ADOS is away on leave, we would never have known had
it not been for the starting blocks and a pair of suitcases out-
side his office door for the past week! I believe it was on
BFBS as well.
Highlight of the month was an alleged cricket match
between teams representing DOS v DDOS. Luckless fellow that
T am, having damaged a thumb at net practice, I had to resign
myself to sitting*on the steps of a quaint little charnel house at
Wulfen, discussing Italian suits and winkle-pickers with Noddy
Nagle watching the destruction of the DDOS team and the
depletion of the Carlsberg stocks.
Following an over bowled by Major Stuart Rowselh a
complaint was received from the pilot of a VC 10 who had
been narrowly missed by a still rising cricket ball at 17,000 feet.
The DDOS has written to the MCC to enquire, if, in umpiring
history there was ever a signal for a ' high/ At the other end
of the scale, the bowling of Lance Corporal Hugh Ward could
only be likened to the Loch Ness Monster undulating down the
pitch.
Following a reasonably mediocre over bowled by
Major Brian Mills, Captain John Cottington (one of the few
cricketers on the field) decided to put himself on to bowl to
rectify the position, his first two deliveries were promptly dis-
patched to the boundary. The quietly caustic comment this
invoked from the ADOS was not supposed to have carried to the
Club House. However, good weather, company and a very well
organised event made it a day enjoyed by all. The team represen-
ting the DOS winning, in the last three hours, by a mere one
hundred and odd runs, very close, so to speak!
Staff Sergeant Ches Hartley has been limping around with
a torn groin muscle and his explanation that he got it whilst
Ashing has been accepted by all?
Lance Corporal Paddy Keating had a twenty first birthday
party and we filled him in on most of the details later. He
was last seen disappearing into the night clutching a tin of
Andrews Liver Salts to his bosom, and muttering "I'll get you
Butler, I'll get you!"
Finally, a very successful Branch dinner was held last
week, and many Brownie points must be awarded to Sherpa
risk for the arrangement. Watch this space
not been forgotten \

HEADQUARTERS
WITH
the main leave period over and most of the staff back to
w
ork, the headquarters is beginning to take on its * business
as usual ' image. The first stirrings of Exercise Autumn Sales
preparations are in the air so the anticipated workload will soon
be upon us.
The longest serving staff clerk in the headquarters has
finally received his posting order. After five years of coping
with AQ and G Training problems, Staff Sergeant Jack Rowley
is off in November to a new post at Ramstein. We trust the
Americans can interpret this Yorkshire lad's Leeds accent!
Sergeant Roy Coe has finally escaped on leave to a destina-
tion unknown leaving PA's corner in the hands of Sergeant
Will McBurney who has ousted Staff Sergeant Ian Lennox from
the COS office. We wish Ian good luck on his Cyprus tour,
Congratulations to Corporal Jed Stone on passing his RPC I
course. However ' bending the knee and driving' obviously
weakened his legs because he is out of action with torn liga-
ments to his right foot.
We say farewell to Corporal Dave Ryder on his attach-
ment to SHAPE where he will undoubtedly spread the judo
gospel among the Allies!
Finally, Sergeant Dave Wolfe has returned from his brief
sojourn in Central America—from bright sunshine to the cellar
gloom of the R and D.

HEADQUARTERS RAOC
1 WAS asked to write these notes by
Captain Andy Collis who was obviously
delighted when I agreed. Little did he
know that he was posted to Belize and
would have been excused anyway. Also,
it's the only way I can get a mention these
days.
As the news spread, I became popular.
Lance Corporal John Griffiths reckoned
that the way to sell THE GAZETTE is to
put people's names in print. We'll see when the next sub-
scriptions are due, won't we John?
Tve just about got over the initial shock of having to run
three miles twice a week, but wish I knew how Sergeant Dave
Coombs manages such excellent timings. If only I could keep
up with him, Corporal Clive Craister and 1 might find out.
T did agree to play in a five-a-side soccer knockout competition,
making up a team together with Major David Avery, SQMS
Del Henty, Sergeant Len Wrightson, Lance Corporal John
Griffiths (second mention!) and Private Dave Dewar. The
kindest comment I can make is that we enjoyed our game and
when I got home my wife asked if the gym was closed, Td
been so quick!
Lance Corporal Tom Nicholson was ' k e y ' man at the
branch barbecue recently and did a fine job as chef. I trust
he has now ' recovered * from the experience.
SQMS Del Henty's son Michael, * signed on * in CRAOC's
office. With a son now in the Royal Signals, Del must watch what
he says, especially in the Mess.
Should Major Roger Forrest feel left out I promise to men-
tion him next month.
Finally, on a sad note, T have to record the death, as a
result of a traffic accident, of Private Alan Saxby, late of this
Headquarters.
7 ORDNANCE FIELD PARK
THE beginning of August saw the return from an enjoyable
two weeks Summer Camp in Bavaria. The red-coats provided
various activities which included abseiling, canoeing, trekking,
a survival exercise and a skill-at-arms meeting. Monsoon type
rain-storms also provided some opportunities for life saving
and swimming—amongst the tentage! Special note must be
made of Private McClennan's argument with a trailer (which
he lost). Sergeant * Rock * Heskeths superb cabaret act and
the human fly demonstrations of Second Lieutenant Lloyd,
Sergeant Wad ley and Corporal Walker. Private Perry's angling
ability and Private * Scouse * Farrimonds continuous gay social
commentary are also worthy of mention.
On the sporting scene Captain O'Connell and Staff Sergeant
Rule performed well in the RAOC team at the BAOR para-
chute championships.
The team came second overall and
won the four man sequential event, whilst Staff Sergeant Rule
came eleventh overall individually.
We congratulate Lance Corporal Braidford on his pro-
motion and say farewell to Corporals Crowshaw and Yearwood
on posting, and Lieutenant Medcalf on attachment.
