Transcription Eddie (Celtic) Wilson masterminded a 2-1 victory, the winning
goal being scored by super sub Stefan Rzemyk. The rugby
and hockey teams got off to a* rather shaky start and were
beaten in their last games,
It would appear that England is noL alone in its football
hooliganism problem. After a local match at Borussia Moen-
chengladbach a Senior Warrant Officer had his hat stolen and
was set upon by rival supporters. Serious injury was averted
by the prompt action of a very senior officer of the Unit who
tackled both assailants with such agility that they fled. Having
now assembled all the facts, it is rumoured that the Officer-in-
Charge boxing is looking no further than the Headquarters
building around which to build his squad this season! !
We are sorry to record that Major Dai Jones has been
hospitalised with a perforated ulcer and we all wish him a very
speedy recovery. In the meantime, the Regimental reins are
in the hands of ammunition expert, Major Gill Guthrie.
Whilst the Orderly Room deals with postings administra-
tion in a very efficient manner, the transit of Staff Sergeant
Bulmer's pet rabbit to Berlin did cause some problems, 'Staff
Clearance * from Headquarters Berlin was finally obtained,
and although the matter is now officially closed, we are sure
that the posting of ' Bulmers Black Bunny' will remain the
subject of hilarity for some time to come!
The Commanding Officer has accepted a challenge from
the Commanding Officer of SSD Viersen to a unit cross country
race, with everyone taking part and scaled into age groups.
This ' joust' is to take part (luckily) later on this year and it
is hoped to include an article on the race in THE GAZETTE.
Farewell this month to Staff Sergeant Bulmer, Lance
Corporals Colak, Giles and Gardner (REME) and Lance
Corporal Partington, the latter detached to Northern Ireland.
Congratulations to Lance Corporal and Mrs Coney, Lance
Corporal and Mrs Gatley and Private and Mrs Cowell on the
birth of sons, and to Private Adrian Hayes on his marriage to
Miss Jacqueline Insole.
A warm VSD welcome to Major Guthrie and family, Staff
Sergeant Daunt, Sergeant Siggs (REME), Lance Corporals
Gillot, Wyllie and McCormish and Private Gemmie, ACC.
STORES SUB-DEPOT DULMEN
ONE of the highlights of the month was the attachment of a
* Shadow' Combat Supplies Platoon to 2 Squadron RCT for
Exercise Autumn Climax. This hand picked bunch of men
spent a pleasant, if busy, ten days knee deep in mud and compo,
in the wilds just south of Wolfenbtittel.
During the exercise the enemy made a fatal mistake when
they attacked the platoon's location from the back of a four
tonner. They were received with howls of derision and a
shower of empty compo tins. To add insult to injury they
were also issued with the dreaded * F* menu compo for the
rest of the exercise—hell hath no fury like chicken supreme!
There was a most unfortunate accident, when a full
jerrican of diesel was dropped from the back of a ' ten tonner'
and bounced off the head of Staff Sergeant Arthur. He was
not amused when a voice from the dark said, " It's all right
Staff the can's not leaking 1"
The longest tent in the world—four hundred and seventy seven
feet used at the SSD Dulmen 1977 Shutzenfest. Erected by
one hundred and twenty seven men in one pull.—The sick bay
is now full! (Reference—The Guinness Book of Records.)
The platoon were very weary as they arrived back at
Dulmen on Friday evening. Morale reached an all time l o w
as a cheerful voice told them, " You are all required for the
Shutzenfest tomorrow I" There was a deathly silence broken
only by the sound of a can of chicken supreme bouncing off
the head of the cheerful messenger.
The Shutzenfest was yet again an event to remember, being
superbly organised by WOI Luetchford, and involving a lot
of hard work by the Unit in general—and the cooks in particular.
Over six thousand marks will now be donated to charities
as a result. A notable sideline was the claim that the longest
tent in the world was used during the proceedings. Erected by
one hundred and twenty seven men in one pull, the total length
was four hundred and seventy seven feet and easily beat the
previous best in the last edition of the Guinness Book of
Records.
The cross country team began the new season well, and
after the RAF Bruggen run they lead the Rhine Area Minor
Units League with seven hundred and sixty three points. In
the run they managed an overall third position competing well
with the major units,
The hockey team are also very competitive this season and
have the following record:—v. 227 Signal Squadron won 4-0;
v. British Forces Antwerp won 1-0. Both matches being away!

THE Unit PR I Caravans have again proved extremely success-
ful for families during ihe summer months. The one based at
Pom mem on the Mosel is now back with us for the winter
months, but the one situated near Roermond is available all the
year round. There are many facilities for off-season holidays
there, including an excellent hotel nearby which specialises in
sea food. The caravan is heated and has a television set
Many families are looking forward to weekend
breaks when the
s
children can go riding, visit the local disco * or go skating in
the really cold weather.
Following his third place in the recent BAOR and RAF
Germany two day cycle race at Sennelager, SSM Ron Foster
departed for Hycres in the South of France for the Annual
Tour du Var stage race. The race comprised nine stages in ;
seven days making a total of six hundred and forty eight kilo- •
metres. As it is such a demanding race, a strong team is ;>
essential, and SSM Foster was lucky enough to be invited to .:
ride in a German team. This team eventually provided not
only the winning team, but the individual winner too. Out
of one hundred and twenty riders who started there were about
seventy finishers, SSM Foster's highest stage placing was sixth
completing one hundred and thirteen kilometres of very hilly
country in three hours five minutes. He also gained fourteenth -
place on the final stage, fifty kilometres in the exceptional time
of one hour forty seconds.
SSM Pete Emerton gained a very creditable second place
overall in the Rhine Area Autumn Golf Meeting held at RAF
Braggen.
The Fencing Club has just held its first working meeting
with an attendance of fifteen out of twenty members. Major
Reggie von Zugbach de Sugg and Lance Corporal Tom Talbot
have spent five weeks assembling the kit. The first meeting
produced some surprises and a good deal of potential talent was
spotted. Private Ray Lee shewed himself to be a viscious
sabreur whilst Corporal Robin Fairclough came to the fore
as a wielder of the epee. Mention should also be made of the
special surprise which we have in store for our future opponents.
W02 George Hendley and Corporal Kevin Adams do not only
develop a mean streak as soon as somone puts a foil in their
hands, they are left-handers, so watch out the enemy.
The Bracht Barbarians have recently completed their UK
tour, which took them this year to Plymouth and London.
Town send Car Ferries will never be the same after experiencing
our fine body of men bewildering the civilian element by their
cries of ' No sleeping on Tour,*
Before the first big game it was decided to have a rigorous
training session in the vicinity of Heartbreak Hill, seven miles
outside Plymouth. Unfortunately the coach (the wheeled one)
was unable to turn around at the bottom of the steep hill and
it was only after Major * P J ' Nisbet had brought in some
' heavies' armed with picks and shovels that they managed to
extricate the vehicle.
The first game was played under floodlights against Devon-
port Services Second XV and resulted in a win for the Bar-
barians nineteen points to six. The Devonport Services First
XV turned the tables on Bracht in the second game, which after
